How to start an ecommerce business: the free Ecom Relays Learning Center
Running a good online store is a set of skills, and skills can be learned.
This is where we teach them, in order, for Amazon, Walmart and Shopify, with every number dated and sourced.
Free and ungated. No sign-up, no fee, no certificate. Four guides: Amazon, Walmart, Shopify and AI automation.
To start an ecommerce business in 2026, price one product on each channel after every fee, prepare your entity, tax ID, barcodes and trademark, choose one channel to launch on, set up fulfillment, list and launch, then run a weekly rhythm for stock, margin and account health. Each step has a free lesson below.
Ecommerce rewards people who treat it as operations work: knowing your numbers, keeping stock in the right place and protecting the account that lets you sell. None of that is secret, and most of it can be learned before you spend a dollar on inventory.
This Learning Center is free and has no sign-up wall. Our ops leads write and review it, and every platform fact shows its source and the date we checked it. It is not a course. Read it in order, or jump to the guide you need.
How do you start an ecommerce business in 2026?
Nine steps, in the order that wastes the least money. Each one links to the lesson that teaches it.
- 01Decide what you sell and how you will get it.
The product is your decision. Pick a business model you can afford to run: see ecommerce business models compared.
- 02Work out margin per unit before you buy stock.
Price minus referral fee, fulfillment fee, landed cost, ad cost per unit and a returns allowance. If the number does not work on paper, it will not work in a warehouse. Try it in the fee and margin calculator.
- 03Prepare the paperwork.
A business entity, a business tax ID or business license number (Walmart does not accept a Social Security number), GS1 barcodes and a pending or registered trademark if you plan to use Amazon Brand Registry. Walmart lists the tax ID and "GTIN/UPC GS1 Company Prefix Numbers" among its requirements (Walmart Marketplace FAQ). Brand Registry asks for "an active registered trademark or a pending trademark registration" (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements), and the US trademark office reported first-action pendency of 4.45 months in the first half of fiscal 2026 (USPTO, May 5, 2026). File early.
- 04Choose your first channel.
Amazon, Walmart or your own Shopify store. Each charges differently and asks for different documents. Start with one and run it well: choose your path helps you pick.
- 05Open the account in your own name.
You own the seller account, the brand and the data. Anyone who helps you gets their own named user access, never your password.
- 06Set up fulfillment.
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), your own shipping or a 3PL. Since Jan 1, 2026, Amazon no longer offers prep and item labeling services for FBA shipments in the US, so your first shipment must arrive ready (Amazon, quoted by Packaging Insights, Oct 29, 2025).
- 07List and launch.
Titles, images, attributes and price, written to each channel's rules. Since Jul 27, 2026, Amazon caps titles at 75 characters in every category except media (Amazon Seller Forums announcement, revised Jun 10, 2026).
- 08Run a weekly rhythm.
Daily: orders, messages, stock. Weekly: margin by product, the reorder plan, account health. Monthly: fees, reimbursements and a short written review.
- 09Scale only what works.
Add products, ad spend or a second channel once the first one runs on a schedule rather than on your memory.
Every step has a full lesson in each channel guide's Start page: start selling on Amazon, start selling on Walmart and start a Shopify store.
What is the learning path?
Three stages. Find yours, then follow the guide for your channel.
| Stage | Who it is for | What you learn | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Start | You have a product (or a product idea) and the budget for stock, fees and ads. You are not selling yet, or you just started | Unit economics, paperwork, channel choice, first listings, first shipment, first 90 days | Amazon start · Walmart start · Shopify start · AI automation start |
| 2. Scale | You sell every week and want to reach about $1M a year without the store running you | Reorder points, fee control, account health, ads measured on margin, support and returns, first automations | Amazon scale · Walmart scale · Shopify scale · AI automation scale |
| 3. Beyond $1M | You run an operating brand and the founder has become the bottleneck | Systems, team, cash, multichannel, 3PL oversight, SOPs, monthly reviews | Amazon beyond $1M · Walmart beyond $1M · Shopify beyond $1M · AI automation beyond $1M |
Move at your own pace. Your progress is saved in this browser only, and we never see it.
Which guide do you need?
Four guides, one per channel plus automation. Each follows the same structure, so you always know where to look.
Amazon guide
The biggest marketplace and the most rules. Learn FBA and FBM, Brand Registry, account health, the 2026 fee stack and how Alexa for Shopping reads your listings.
Walmart guide
Fewer sellers than Amazon and fast marketplace growth. Learn the seller application, performance standards, WFS, pricing rules and listing quality.
Shopify guide
Your own store and your own customers. Learn plans and payment fees, checkout, apps, Shopify Flow and Functions, payouts and chargebacks.
AI automation guide
Where automation helps an online store and where it must stop. Learn what to automate first, guardrails, AI shopping assistants and product data a machine can read.
Every guide has the same eleven parts:

What does it cost to start selling on Amazon, Walmart and Shopify?
Platform fees are the part you can know before you start. Inventory, freight, packaging, photos and ads depend on your product, and you pay them.
| Cost | Amazon | Walmart | Shopify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan | Professional plan $39.99 a month; or the Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold | No setup or monthly fee | Basic $39 a month billed monthly ($29 billed yearly); Grow $105 and Advanced $399 a month billed monthly ($79 and $299 billed yearly); Plus from $2,300 a month |
| Per sale | Referral fee by category and price tier, usually with a $0.30 minimum: for example 15% in Home and Kitchen, 8% in Consumer Electronics and 45% for Amazon Device Accessories | Referral fee by category: 15% for the Everything Else category, and each category has its own rate | Card rate 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic (2.7% Grow, 2.5% Advanced, 2.25% Plus) for standard cards; an extra 2% on Basic if you use a third-party payment provider (1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced, 0.2% Plus) |
| Fulfillment | FBA fees by size and weight, plus a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge since Apr 17, 2026 and a holiday peak fee from Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027 | WFS fees by weight and size, or your own shipping | Your own shipping, a 3PL or Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment |
| Source | Sell on Amazon, Pricing; Amazon Seller Forums fee notices | Walmart referral fee schedule, Mar 9, 2026 | Shopify pricing page |
All three checked Oct 20, 2026. Shopify's pricing page also shows a promotion, "3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months"; promotions change, so check the current terms.
Costs every channel shares: product and freight (landed cost), duties and tariffs, packaging and labels, barcodes, a trademark filing ($350 per class for an electronic base application at the USPTO), product photos, ad spend and a cash buffer for payout timing. Price your own product with the fee and margin calculator, or ask for a free Launch Readiness Check.

Which tools and apps do sellers use?
Sort tools by the job they do, not by brand. Start with the free tools the platforms give you, and add a paid app only when a job costs you hours every week.
| Job | Start with the platform's own tool | When sellers add an app | Our free calculator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price a product after fees | Amazon Revenue Calculator (named on Sell on Amazon, Pricing) | When you sell many SKUs on more than one channel | Fee and margin calculator |
| Plan stock and reorders | Inventory reports in Seller Central and Seller Center | When stock sits in FBA, WFS, Shopify and a 3PL at once | Reorder point calculator |
| Watch storage fees | Amazon fee reports; Walmart's WFS fee pages | When aged or peak fees show up on statements | Amazon storage fee estimator · WFS storage fee calculator |
| Automate store tasks | Shopify Flow, which Shopify describes as "an ecommerce automation platform that you can use to automate tasks and processes within your store", free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus | When a task crosses several systems | Cost of Chaos calculator |
| Price competitively on Walmart | Walmart Repricer: "Items must have a minimum and maximum price entered to be assigned to a strategy" (Walmart Marketplace Learn, updated May 26, 2026) | When you manage many items across channels | None |
| See cash timing | Payout reports on each platform | When payouts, ad bills and supplier terms cross months | Cash conversion cycle calculator |
Each guide's Tools and apps page names the widely used third-party tools for that channel, described from their own websites: Amazon · Walmart · Shopify · AI automation.
Ecom Relays is not paid by and not affiliated with any tool listed. We name widely used tools so you know your options.
What are Relay Modules?
Relay Modules are our automation models: fixed-scope automations we build and document inside your own accounts, with a person checking every alert. Each guide's Automation page shows how they apply to that channel.
| Module | What it does |
|---|---|
| RELAY-01 Profit and Cash Pulse | A daily owner view: margin by SKU and channel, payouts held and when they land, cash tied up in stock, a 13-week cash forecast |
| RELAY-02 Margin Guard | Every fee, ad cost, shipping and landed cost per SKU; alerts and pricing rules when a SKU falls below its floor |
| RELAY-03 Stock Flow | One stock count across Amazon FBA, Walmart WFS, Shopify and the 3PL; reorder points, purchase order drafts, stockout alerts |
| RELAY-04 Landed Cost Desk | Landed cost per SKU under current tariff rules, price scenarios, paperwork ready for the customs broker |
| RELAY-05 Account Health Watch | Daily Amazon and Walmart health checks, policy and pricing-rule checks, a compliance vault, appeal preparation |
| RELAY-06 WISMO Breaker | Proactive shipping updates, AI-assisted replies to order-status questions, escalation rules |
| RELAY-07 Returns Relay | Return rules, exchange-first flows, restocking, chargeback evidence, reason-code reporting |
| RELAY-08 3PL Audit | Monthly invoice checks, stock reconciliation between 3PL and store, delivery-time monitoring |
| RELAY-09 Catalog Ready | Clean product data and feeds that meet title and pricing rules in marketplaces, search and AI shopping assistants |
| RELAY-10 Channel Launch | A new marketplace for a running brand, planned before it goes live |
Automate first the job you do most often by hand that has a clear right answer. For most stores that is order-status updates (RELAY-06) or stock alerts (RELAY-03). Leave refunds above a set amount, account appeals and price changes below a margin floor for a person to approve.
Standard modules are $750; advanced builds are $1,500 to $3,500. We build them in your accounts, and you keep them. See all Relay Modules.

What is the honest risk?
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
What that means in practice:
Stores that last do not have a secret product. They have four habits: operations discipline (a written weekly rhythm), unit economics (margin per unit after every fee, before buying stock), account health (checked every business day) and cash (knowing when money leaves and when it comes back). The honest case for 2026 covers each one.
What this Learning Center is not: a course, a coaching program or a store-for-sale program. We do not sell stores and we never promise income. It is free reading and watching, with a free session with an ops lead if you want one.
-
Nobody can promise you sales, rankings or a date when the store pays for itself, including us.
-
Choosing what to sell stays your decision, and we do not sell product lists. If you want help researching and sourcing a product, Full Relay, our managed store service, does that work with you: you approve every product and supplier and pay suppliers directly.
-
The market numbers on these pages describe the market. They are not a forecast of what any one store will earn.

You can reach an ops lead directly, and nothing you typed is lost.
Is the Learning Center free?
Yes. Every guide, lesson and video is free to read and watch, with no sign-up wall and no certificate. We fund it because people who learn how stores really run sometimes ask us to help run theirs. If you want to talk something through, book a free 30-minute session with an ops lead. There is no pitch deck.
How much money do I need to start an online store?
It depends on your product. Platform fees are known: Amazon's Professional plan is $39.99 a month, Walmart has no monthly fee and Shopify Basic is $39 a month billed monthly (platform pricing pages, Oct 20, 2026). The larger costs are inventory, freight, packaging, photos and ads, all paid by you. Price one product after every fee before you order stock.
Should I start on Amazon, Walmart or Shopify?
Start where your product's numbers and paperwork fit. Amazon has the most shoppers and the most rules. Walmart has fewer sellers, a stricter application and fast marketplace growth. Shopify gives you your own customers, but you bring the traffic. Choose your path walks through the choice in three questions.
How long does it take to make the first sale?
It varies too much to promise a date. Amazon says verifying your identity "usually takes three business days or less" (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide), and a first shipment, listings and reviews take weeks more. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do.
Can I start without holding inventory?
Some models let you: print on demand and dropshipping. Both have platform rules. Walmart does not allow buying from another retailer and having it shipped directly to your customer (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Packaging policy, updated Dec 10, 2025). Amazon's drop shipping policy says you must always be the seller of record (Amazon Seller Forums, News_Amazon). Read business models compared before you choose one.
Do I need a business license, an EIN or a trademark?
Walmart asks for a business tax ID or business license number and does not accept a Social Security number (Walmart Marketplace FAQ). Amazon Brand Registry needs an active registered trademark or a pending trademark registration (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements). Licenses and sales tax rules depend on your state and product, so confirm them with your accountant or attorney.
Can AI run my store for me?
No. AI helps with specific jobs: answering order-status questions, drafting listings, flagging stock and fee problems. A person should approve refunds above a set amount, account appeals and price changes. The AI automation guide shows where it helps and where it must stop.
Who writes this, and how current is it?
Our ops leads write and review every page. Every platform fact shows its source and the date we checked it, and the seller rule tracker logs each change as it happens.
