How to run a Shopify store in 2026
Shopify can put a store online in an afternoon.
Running it well, week after week, is a craft, and it can be learned. This guide lays out the whole path, with every fee, rule and 2026 change checked against Shopify's own pages.
Quick answer
Running a Shopify store means owning six jobs every week: the catalog, checkout and payments, shipping, customer messages, marketing and the numbers. In 2026 it also means keeping up with platform changes: Scripts stopped running on Jun 30, 2026. Non-Plus stores lost Thank you page scripts on Aug 26, 2026. Products now appear in AI chats by default.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
What does it take to run a Shopify store well?
A Shopify store is software you rent and a business you run. Shopify handles hosting, checkout security and the admin. You handle everything a customer can feel: what you sell, how fast it ships, how quickly someone answers and whether the price still leaves money after every fee.
Most stores that struggle are short of a routine, not of ideas. Here is the routine we teach in this guide, by how often each job needs attention.
| Job | Every day | Every week | Every month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orders | Clear stuck, unpaid and high-risk orders; check what has not shipped | Review cancellations and their causes | Reconcile orders against payouts |
| Stock | Check stock on your top sellers against open orders and inbound | Reorder plan with a quantity for each SKU | Count or reconcile with your warehouse or 3PL |
| Customer messages | Answer every message; send delay notices before customers ask | Read ticket reasons; fix the top cause | Update templates and return rules |
| Payments | Watch for disputes with deadlines | Check payout status and any holds | Review fees by payment method |
| Marketing | Check ad spend against yesterday's orders | Review email and SMS results; plan next week | Review which channels bring buyers who come back |
| Numbers | None needed daily at the start | Orders, margin per order, stockouts, response time | A written one-page review: what changed and why |
If you do only one thing from this table, do the weekly review on a fixed day. Stores that look at the same five numbers every week find problems while they are still small.
Is Shopify still worth building on in 2026?
Here are the facts, then the risks. You can weigh them yourself.
The market.
US retail ecommerce sales were $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, 17.1% of all retail sales, up 12.2% from a year earlier (US Census Bureau, released Aug 18, 2026). Merchants sold $378.44 billion through Shopify in 2025 (Shopify, company report). That is the market. It is not a forecast of what any one store will sell.
What changed in your favor.
Shopify now makes eligible products discoverable in AI chat tools such as ChatGPT by default through Agentic Storefronts, with "no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates" for ChatGPT sales (Shopify News, Mar 24, 2026). Sidekick and Shopify Markets are included on every plan (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026), and Shopify Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). Things that needed paid apps or developers a few years ago are now built in.
What makes it hard.
Online carts are abandoned 70.22% of the time on average (Baymard Institute, page updated Sep 22, 2025). NRF and Happy Returns estimated that 19.3% of online sales would be returned in 2025 (Oct 15, 2025). A chargeback costs merchants an average of $128 in fees and internal costs, not counting the goods lost (Mastercard, page updated Jun 8, 2026). Shopify gives you the store. It does not give you traffic, customers or a product people want.
Our honest view.
Shopify is a sound base for a brand with a real product and the budget for inventory, fees and ads. It rewards owners who learn the operations. It does not reward shortcuts.
Which stage are you at?
Pick the row that sounds like you. Each stage has its own page, and the modules teach the skills in order.
| Stage | Sounds like | Your first page | Modules to start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start: zero to first sales | "We have a product and a budget, but no store yet." "We launched, and orders are slow." | Start | 01, 02, 03 |
| Scale: toward about $1M a year | "Orders are steady, but I am doing every job myself." "Ads work, but margin is thin." | Scale | 04, 05, 06 |
| Beyond $1M: systems and team | "Revenue is up, but margin is not." "We sell on Amazon and Walmart too, and stock does not match." | Beyond $1M | 07, 08 |
Selling on Amazon or Walmart as well? The Amazon guide and the Walmart guide follow the same three stages, so you can read them side by side.
What does Shopify cost in 2026?
Shopify's published plans, read on Oct 20, 2026:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly (per month) | Online card rate, Shopify Payments | Fee if you use another payment provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2% |
| Grow | $105 | $79 | 2.7% + 30¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 | 2.5% + 30¢ | 0.6% |
| Plus | From $2,300 | 1- or 3-year terms | 2.25% + 30¢ | 0.2% |
Source: shopify.com/pricing, read Oct 20, 2026. Card rates shown are the standard online rates; the page lists higher rates for some card types, and international cards add 1%. New stores can "Try 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months" on most plans.
What else you pay. The plan is usually the smallest line. Budget for these too:
- Payment processing on every order (above).
- Apps. Many are free; many charge a monthly fee that rises with orders or contacts.
- A theme, if you buy one instead of using a free Shopify theme.
- Shipping labels, packaging and returns.
- Inventory, paid before you sell it.
- Ads and content to bring visitors.
- Sales tax filing help, if you sell into several states.
Module 01 walks through which plan fits which store, with a simple rule for when the cheaper card rate on a higher plan pays for itself.
What changed on Shopify in 2026?
Six changes matter most for store owners. Each one has a full explanation and a "what to do" list on What's new in 2026.
- 01Shopify Scripts stopped running on Jun 30, 2026.
Editing ended Apr 15, 2026. Discounts, shipping and payment rules that lived in Scripts must now run on Shopify Functions or an app (Shopify changelog, Apr 9, 2026).
- 02Thank you and Order status page scripts ended.
The deadline for non-Plus stores was Aug 26, 2026 (Plus: Aug 28, 2025). Tracking pixels that lived in the Additional scripts box need to move to apps and Shopify's pixel tools (Shopify Help Center).
- 03Products appear in AI chats by default.
Agentic Storefronts are active by default for eligible stores and cover ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini (plus Meta since Sep 8, 2026), managed from one admin page (Shopify News, Help Center and changelog).
- 04Older app script tags are on a clock.
No new storefront script tags from Oct 1, 2026; Shopify stops loading them on Mar 1, 2027 (Shopify developer changelog, Aug 24, 2026).
- 05Stocky closed after Aug 31, 2026.
Stores that used it for purchase orders need a replacement (Shopify Help Center).
- 06Sidekick can now take actions.
It presents changes for your review before applying them (Shopify Help Center).
We log every change with its source and date on the Seller rule tracker, updated monthly.
Which business model fits Shopify?
Shopify supports many ways to sell. Some are steady businesses; some carry risks that marketing pages leave out. The full comparison is on Business models.
| Model | In one line | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Own brand DTC | You make or commission your own product and sell it on your own store | Inventory paid up front; you must bring all the traffic |
| Private label DTC | A factory's product with your brand on it | Easy to copy; margin squeezed by look-alikes |
| Print on demand | Items printed only after an order | Thin margin per item; slower delivery |
| Dropshipping | A supplier ships orders you take | Delivery times, quality and customer anger you cannot control |
| Subscriptions | Customers buy on a schedule | Churn; payment failures |
| Wholesale and B2B | Selling to shops and businesses on Shopify | Slower payment terms; larger orders to fund |
| DTC plus marketplaces | Shopify as the hub, with Amazon and Walmart as channels | Stock and price kept in sync across channels |
| Managed operations | A named team runs the daily work in your accounts; Full Relay, our managed store service, also covers product research and sourcing | Fees on top of your costs; you still own and approve every decision |

Which tools and apps do most Shopify stores use?
Start with what Shopify includes: Shopify Flow for automation, Sidekick as an assistant in the admin, Shopify Inbox for chat, Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) for email and SMS, Shopify Markets for selling abroad and Shopify Subscriptions for repeat orders. Add a third-party app only when a job outgrows the built-in tool.
When stores do add apps, they tend to add them by job: email and SMS (for example Klaviyo or Attentive), reviews (Judge.me or Yotpo), a helpdesk (Gorgias), subscriptions (Recharge), shipping (ShipStation), tracking and returns (AfterShip or Loop) and accounting (A2X). The full list, with what each tool does in its maker's own words, is on Tools and apps.
Ecom Relays is not paid by and not affiliated with any tool listed. We name widely used tools so you know your options.
What should you automate first?
Automate the work that repeats every day and follows a rule. Leave judgment to people.
- Automate first:
tagging and routing orders, low-stock alerts, shipping updates, review requests, fraud-risk holds for manual review.
- Automate with a human check:
refunds above a set amount, price changes, purchase orders.
- Do not automate:
anything that changes payouts, bank details or legal settings; replies that promise a refund or a date nobody has confirmed.
Shopify Flow is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026), so most stores can start there. Our own automation models for Shopify, the Relay Modules, are explained on Automation.
Where do Shopify stores usually lose money?
The leaks are rarely dramatic. They are small and steady:
- Checkout friction and surprise shipping costs at the last step.
- The 2% fee on Basic when card payments run through another provider.
- Chargebacks answered late or without delivery proof.
- Payouts held while orders keep shipping.
- Stockouts on the products that bring in most orders.
- "Where is my order?" messages that a shipping update would have prevented.
- Apps you pay for that duplicate something Shopify now includes.
Each one has a cause, a fix and a way to measure it on Problems and fixes.

How much does it cost to run a Shopify store each month?
Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly, plus 2.9% + 30¢ per online card order through Shopify Payments (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). On top of that, plan for apps, shipping, packaging, inventory and ads. For most new stores, inventory and ads cost far more than the plan itself.
Is it hard to run a Shopify store?
Setting one up is not hard. Running it well takes a steady routine: clearing orders daily, keeping stock ahead of demand, answering customers quickly and reviewing the same few numbers every week. The skills can be learned in order, which is what the 8 modules in this guide are for.
How long does it take to get the first sale on Shopify?
There is no standard answer. It depends on the product, the price, how many people already know the brand and how much you spend on traffic. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Plan your budget for that, and measure progress weekly.
Do I need to know how to code to run a Shopify store?
No. Themes, Shopify Flow and most apps need no code. Code matters for custom checkout logic on Shopify Functions, custom apps and heavily edited themes. Sidekick can "generate custom apps to help you manage your store," and it "presents changes for your review before applying them" (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
What changed on Shopify in 2026 that I need to act on?
Check four things: any discount, shipping or payment rule that used to run on Shopify Scripts (stopped Jun 30, 2026); tracking on your Thank you page (non-Plus deadline Aug 26, 2026); apps that still load storefront script tags (no longer loaded from Mar 1, 2027); and how your products appear in AI chats, which happens by default through Agentic Storefronts.
Should I use Shopify Payments or another payment provider?
If you use another provider for card payments, Shopify adds its own fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). Some stores need another provider for their product type or country. If you do not, compare the full cost at your order volume before you choose.
Is the Learning Center paid? Do I have to sign up?
No. The Learning Center is a free guide with lessons you can read in any order. There is no fee, no sign-up wall and no certificate. If you want to talk your situation through with a person, you can book a free 30-minute session with an ops lead.
Can someone run my Shopify store for me?
Yes, if you choose that. Store Care runs the daily work of a new store inside your own accounts from $399 a month. Full Relay, our managed store service, goes further: product research, sourcing, setup, launch and daily running, with you approving every product, supplier, price and purchase. Either way you keep the store, the money and every decision. It is owner-light, not owner-free. Nobody honest can promise you sales, profit or rankings, and we never do. Our Shopify store management page explains the options.
