Shopify tools and apps in 2026, by job
The essential Shopify apps in 2026 are mostly ones Shopify already gives you.
Start with what Shopify includes, then add a tool only when a job has outgrown it.
Quick answer
Start with Shopify's own tools: Flow for automation, Sidekick in the admin, Inbox for chat, Messaging for email and SMS, Subscriptions, Search and Discovery, Markets and Collective. Add third-party apps by job, such as email and SMS, reviews, helpdesk, shipping and tracking, returns, subscriptions and accounting, when the built-in tool no longer fits.

How do you choose an app?
-
What store data does the app ask to access, and why?
The install screen lists it. An app that only shows reviews has no reason to edit orders.
-
Who supports it, and how fast?
A checkout or shipping app that breaks on a Friday needs someone who answers on a Friday.
-
What happens to your data if you uninstall?
Ask whether data is deleted, exported or kept, and for how long.
-
Does uninstalling remove its code?
Older apps sometimes leave snippets in the theme. Ask the developer how to remove them cleanly, and check your theme after any uninstall.
Ask five questions before you install:
- 01Which job does it do, and does Shopify already include that job?
Check Flow, Inbox, Messaging, Subscriptions and Search and Discovery first.
- 02What does it cost at your volume in 12 months?
Many apps price by orders, contacts or messages.
- 03Does it slow your store?
Install, then check mobile page speed on a product page.
- 04How does it load on your storefront?
From Mar 1, 2027 Shopify stops loading storefront script tags; apps should use app embed blocks (shopify.dev changelog, Aug 24, 2026). Ask the developer.
- 05Can you leave?
Can you export your data (reviews, subscribers, contacts) if you switch?
Then ask the developer four more questions, in writing, before an app touches customer or order data:
How many apps is too many?
There is no right number, but every app adds a monthly fee, possible page weight and one more system that can disagree with the others. Once a quarter, list every app with its job, monthly cost and last time someone used it. Cancel what nobody uses; replace with a built-in tool where it does the job well enough.
Quarterly app audit template
| App | Job | Monthly cost at current volume | Owner | Built-in alternative? | Keep, replace or cancel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| (name) | (one line) | ($) | (person) | (Flow, Inbox, Messaging...) | (decision) |
How do you work out what your app stack really costs?
Monthly app fees are easy to overlook because each one looks small. Add them up for a full year at the volume you expect, not the volume you have today.
Example (illustrative · sample figures): a store pays for an email platform, a reviews app, a helpdesk, a returns app and a shipping tool. Today they cost $60, $15, $50, $40 and $30 a month, or $195. At twice the orders and contacts, three of them move up a tier, and the bill becomes $380 a month, about $4,560 a year. Before you add the next app, ask whether the job is worth that share of your margin, and whether Flow or a built-in tool could do it for nothing extra.
Keep one line in your weekly numbers for app spend. When it rises faster than orders, run the quarterly audit above early.
Which tools connect Shopify with your other systems?
Once a store sells on more than one channel or uses a 3PL, the jobs that hurt most sit between systems: stock counts, order routing and costs. Shopify's own options come first. Marketplace Connect links your store with Amazon, Walmart, eBay and Target Plus (Shopify App Store, read Oct 20, 2026), and Flow can call other systems with its Send HTTP Request action on Grow and above (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
Beyond that, stores use general connectors and planning tools, described here from their own websites (read Oct 20, 2026):
| Job | Tool | What it says it does |
|---|---|---|
| Connect apps without code | Zapier | Connects more than 9,000 apps with automated workflows it calls Zaps |
| Visual automation | Make | Builds and manages "AI agents and automations" in a visual builder, connecting more than 3,000 apps |
| Self-hosted or technical automation | n8n | Workflow automation with more than 500 integrations that teams can host themselves |
| Inventory planning | Inventory Planner by Sage | Forecasting and purchase recommendations: "Know what to order, when and where" |
Connectors are powerful and easy to get wrong. Each one needs an owner who checks it weekly. Our AI automation guide covers where automation should stop.
Which apps replaced Shopify Scripts at checkout?
Discount, shipping and payment rules that used to run on Shopify Scripts stopped on Jun 30, 2026 (shopify.dev changelog, posted Apr 9, 2026). They now run on Shopify Functions, either through an app built on Functions or a custom Function. When you compare apps for this job, test each rule with a real cart before you go live, and keep a written list of every rule and the app that runs it. Module 08 explains the difference between Flow and Functions, and What's new in 2026 has the full timeline.
A starter stack by stage
| Stage | Built-in first | Add when needed |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Flow, Inbox, Messaging, Search and Discovery, Shopify Shipping | A reviews app |
| Scale | Everything above, plus Subscriptions if it fits | Email and SMS platform; helpdesk; tracking and returns app |
| Beyond $1M | Everything above, plus Markets and B2B where they fit | Inventory or order management across channels; accounting connector; shipping software or a 3PL integration |
Problems and fixes at this stage
| Problem (buyer's words) | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "We pay for dozens of apps to get basic functions." | Apps added one at a time, never reviewed | Quarterly audit; move jobs to Flow and built-in tools | Ops Desk monthly app audit; a Relay Module (from $750) for Flow builds | Monthly app spend and app count |
| "Fifteen apps, four numbers, no truth." | Each app reports its own figure | One owner dashboard with sources | Profit and Cash Pulse | One agreed margin figure |

Which Shopify apps are essential in 2026?
Fewer than most lists suggest. Start with Shopify's free Flow, Inbox and Search and Discovery apps and Shopify Messaging's 10,000 free emails a month, plus a reviews app. Add email and SMS, helpdesk, shipping and returns tools when order volume makes the built-in versions hard to manage.
Is Shopify Flow free?
Yes. Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The Send HTTP Request action needs Grow or above, and tasks created by custom partner apps need Plus (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). Most in-store rules, such as tags, alerts and holds, work on Basic.
Is Shopify Email still available?
It is now called Shopify Messaging and added SMS marketing in select regions (changelog, Dec 10, 2025). Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus stores get 10,000 free emails a month, then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000 (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
Do I need Klaviyo if I have Shopify Messaging?
Not at the start. Shopify Messaging covers campaigns and basic automations. Stores often move to a dedicated platform such as Klaviyo when they want deeper segmentation, more message types or reporting across channels. Compare the cost at your contact count before you switch.
Is Shopify Audiences still available?
Shopify's Help Center still documents it, for eligible stores on Plus that use Shopify Payments and are based in the US or Canada (read Oct 20, 2026). Stores that do not meet those conditions can build audiences in each ad platform instead.
Do apps slow down a Shopify store?
Some do, especially apps that add code to every page. Check mobile speed on a product page after each install. Apps that still use storefront script tags must move to app embed blocks before Mar 1, 2027. If an app adds weight without earning its place, remove it and check that its code is gone from your theme.
Should I use Zapier or Shopify Flow?
Use Flow first for anything that happens inside Shopify: tagging orders, alerts, holds and simple label purchases. It is free and runs inside your store. Reach for a connector such as Zapier or Make when the job needs a system Flow cannot reach, and write down who owns that workflow and how it will be checked.
How do I remove an app cleanly?
Export any data you want to keep first, such as reviews or subscriber lists. Then uninstall the app from the admin, check your theme for leftover code the app may have added and confirm that any checkout, shipping or discount rule it ran has a replacement. Test a real order afterwards.
What replaced Stocky for purchase orders?
Shopify says Stocky "will no longer be available after August 31st, 2026" and points stores to its built-in inventory tools, which track stock by location, transfers and adjustments (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). If you need forecasting or supplier purchase orders beyond that, add an inventory planning app or keep a written weekly reorder routine.
Do I need an app to sell in ChatGPT and other AI chats?
No. Agentic Storefronts are built into Shopify and active by default for eligible stores, and you choose the AI channels in Sales channels, Agentic (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). What helps most is complete product data: clear titles, full descriptions, correct variants and real photos.
