How to start selling on Amazon for beginners: 10 steps to first sales
This is how to start selling on Amazon for beginners in 2026.
Your first sale is built weeks before you list, and doing the ten steps in order skips the mistakes that cost new sellers the most.
To start selling on Amazon, decide your product and model, price one unit after every fee, file your trademark, register and verify your account, choose FBA or FBM, label and prep to Amazon's 2026 rules, write 75-character titles, send a small first shipment, then launch with careful ads and daily checks. Each step below has a checklist.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
Who is this page for?
Founders and companies with a real product, or a clear plan to source one, and the budget for inventory, fees and ads. If you are looking for a shortcut or a ready-made store, this is the wrong page and the wrong business. Choosing what to sell stays your decision; we teach how to sell it well. If you want a team to research and source a product with you, that is Full Relay, our managed store service.
How do beginners start selling on Amazon?
In ten steps, in this order. The order matters: the numbers come before the account, and the trademark starts before the listing because it takes longest.
Step 1. What will you sell, and under which model?
Pick the model before the product, because the model decides what Amazon will ask of you.
- Your own brand (private label or a brand you already own): you need a trademark plan and a supplier.
- Wholesale: you need written authorization from the brand or its distributor and invoices Amazon accepts.
- Handmade: you need Amazon's Handmade approval and a Professional plan (Sell on Amazon, Handmade).
The honest comparison of every model is on Amazon business models. For a first product, simple wins: one size, sturdy, not fragile, not hazardous, not in a category that needs approval and a price that leaves room for fees.
Step 2. Does one unit make money after every fee?
Do this before you pay for anything. Amazon's Revenue Calculator works without a seller account (Sell on Amazon, Pricing).
Contribution margin per unit = price minus referral fee minus FBA fulfillment fee (plus the 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge) minus storage per unit minus landed cost (product, freight, duties, prep) minus ad cost per unit minus returns allowance.
Write the number down for your planned price and for a price 10% lower. If the lower price leaves no margin, the product is fragile on Amazon. Module 02 walks through a full example.
Step 3. Have you started the trademark?
Brand Registry, which protects your listings and opens up A+ Content, Brand Analytics, Sponsored Brands, Vine and Amazon's brand incentives, needs "an active registered trademark or a pending trademark registration" from an approved government office (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements; Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry). The USPTO averaged 4.45 months to a first action in early fiscal 2026 (USPTO), so file now. If you do not have a trademark attorney, Amazon's IP Accelerator connects you with Amazon-vetted legal service providers at pre-negotiated rates (a maximum service fee of $700 plus government fees for a US trademark application) and lets you enroll with a pending application (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements; Sell on Amazon, IP Accelerator). Your brand name and logo must be on the product or packaging (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry). Full lesson: Module 03, Brand Registry and trademarks.
Step 4. Do you have every document ready for verification?
Amazon asks for a government-issued ID, an email address, a credit card that can be charged internationally, a bank account with routing number, business registration (or "None, I am an individual"), proof of address dated within the last 180 days and tax information. Verification "usually takes three business days or less", by a photo of your face and ID or a video call with an Amazon associate (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). Use the same name and address on every document; a mismatch is one of the most common reasons verification stalls. Full lesson: Module 04, Account setup and verification.
Step 5. Individual or Professional?
Individual: $0.99 per item sold. Professional: $39.99 a month (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). Individual is cheaper below about 40 sales a month ($39.99 ÷ $0.99). Choose Professional if you plan to advertise, use Brand Registry benefits, claim the New Seller Incentives or sell more than about 40 units a month; Sponsored Products is open to Professional sellers (Amazon Ads, Sponsored Products).
Step 6. FBA or FBM?
| FBA (Amazon fulfills) | FBM (you fulfill) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who stores and ships | Amazon, from its fulfillment centers | You or your 3PL |
| Customer service and returns | Amazon | You |
| Fees | Fulfillment, monthly storage, aged inventory past 181 days, returns processing, inbound placement (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon), plus 3.5% surcharge on fulfillment fees (Amazon Seller Forums, fuel and logistics surcharge) | Your shipping, packing and labor |
| Delivery metrics | Amazon's | Yours: late shipment rate under 4% and valid tracking, per Amazon |
| Good fit | Small, steady items | Oversized, slow, custom or fragile items |
Run both in the Revenue Calculator (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). New FBA sellers are auto-enrolled in FBA New Selection (free monthly storage and referral fee discounts on new products) when they create an FBA shipment within 90 days of listing their first buyable product (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon). Module 01 covers the choice.
Step 7. Are your barcodes, labels and prep right for 2026?
Two rules changed this year:
- Amazon stopped prep and item labeling services for US FBA shipments on Jan 1, 2026 (Amazon, quoted by Packaging Insights, Oct 29, 2025). Trade press also reports that shipments created after that date without proper prep or labels are not eligible for reimbursement if lost or damaged (Packaging Insights, Oct 29, 2025; Supply Chain Dive, Aug 1, 2025). You prep, or a prep center does.
- Commingling ended for inventory shipped on or after Mar 31, 2026. If you are the Brand Representative in Brand Registry and your product has a manufacturer barcode (UPC), you can ship without an Amazon barcode sticker. Resellers must put an Amazon barcode on every unit. Anyone without a manufacturer barcode must label (Amazon Seller Forums, commingling ends).
Checklist: GS1 barcodes bought in your company's name; packaging that survives a drop; poly bags with suffocation warnings where needed; carton labels printed from the shipment workflow.
Step 8. Is your first listing written for people and for Alexa for Shopping?
Since Jul 27, 2026 titles are 75 characters or less including spaces in every category except media. Item Highlights add 125 characters that are searchable and shown in results (Amazon Seller Forums, title update). Amazon's assistant, Alexa for Shopping, answers shoppers' questions and writes AI overviews of products (About Amazon, Alexa for Shopping), so complete attributes and plain, specific bullets matter as much as keywords.
A first listing needs: a 75-character title (brand, product, the one spec that decides the purchase); Item Highlights (material or use case); five bullets that answer the questions buyers ask; every attribute filled; 6 or more images including one with dimensions; A+ Content once Brand Registry is approved (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry). Full lesson: Module 05, listings for 75-character titles and Alexa for Shopping.
Step 9. How big should the first shipment be?
Small enough that a mistake is cheap, large enough to cover your first weeks of ads. Use Send to Amazon, follow the carton rules and choose inbound placement options on cost. Amazon gives new Professional sellers credits toward inbound placement ($400), partnered carrier shipments ($100) and Amazon Global Logistics ($200) (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon). How much you can send is capped by your monthly FBA capacity limit, which sellers still call the restock limit (Amazon Seller Forums, FBA capacity limits), so check it before you book freight. Module 06 explains how it works.
Step 10. How do you launch without burning cash?
- Price where your unit economics work, not where the lowest competitor sits.
- Start Sponsored Products on a small daily budget with exact and phrase keywords from your research; there are no monthly or upfront fees (Amazon Ads, Sponsored Products).
- Get early reviews the allowed way, such as Amazon Vine (new-to-Amazon sellers who enroll their brand in Brand Registry within six months of their first eligible listing, then enroll a product in Vine within 90 days, can get a $200 Vine credit). Never pay for or trade for reviews.
- Check account health, inventory and ad spend every business day for the first 30 days.
What does the first 90 days look like?
| Weeks | What happens | Owner time |
|---|---|---|
| Before week 0 | Unit economics done, trademark filed, supplier sampled | Decisions on product, price, budget |
| 1 to 2 | Account registered and verified; Brand Registry applied (pending mark) | Documents, and anything else Amazon asks for |
| 2 to 4 | Listings drafted, images shot, barcodes and labels ready | Approve copy and images |
| 4 to 8 | First shipment booked, received and checked in | Approve the shipment plan |
| 6 to 12 | Listings live, ads on, first reviews through Vine, daily checks | 2 to 4 hours a week to review numbers |
These are setup times, not sales times. Some products sell in the first week; many take months; some never find steady demand.
What mistakes do beginners make when they start selling on Amazon?
- Buying inventory before pricing every fee.
- Launching without a trademark filing, then fighting listing changes without Brand Registry.
- Mismatched names or addresses on verification documents.
- Shipping unlabeled or unprepped units after Jan 1, 2026.
- Titles over 75 characters that Amazon rewrites for you (Amazon Seller Forums, title update).
- Ads judged on sales, not on margin.
- No monthly reimbursement check (claims for units lost or damaged in fulfillment centers have a 60-day window; eComEngine, vendor report, Mar 7, 2025).
Problems and fixes on this page
| Problem (buyer's words) | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Our seller application keeps stalling." | Document names, addresses or card details do not match | One document pack, every name and address identical, submitted in your own name | Account Setup ($299 per marketplace), no approval guarantee | Days from submission to verified |
| "We launched without a trademark, and now we cannot protect our listings." | No Brand Registry | File the mark, enroll with the pending application | Store Launch: Amazon ($1,499) includes Brand Registry application support | Brand Registry approved before the first FBA shipment lands |
| "Our first shipment arrived wrong, and we are paying for it." | Prep and label rules missed since Jan 2026 | Shipment plan built to carton and label rules, checked in, discrepancies claimed | Store Launch; Store Care (from $399 a month) | Prep chargebacks on the first shipment |

How much money do I need to start selling on Amazon?
Enough for your first inventory order, freight, prep, a trademark filing ($350 per class base fee at the USPTO), photos, barcodes, the plan ($39.99 a month for Professional) and a few weeks of ads. Price your own product with module 02. We do not publish a typical figure because it depends entirely on the product.
Can I start selling on Amazon without a trademark?
Yes, you can list without one. Without Brand Registry you lose listing protection, A+ Content, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics and, for new-to-Amazon sellers who enroll within six months of their first eligible listing, the 10% back on the first $50,000 of branded sales (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry; Sell on Amazon, New Seller Incentives). A pending application is enough to enroll (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements), so file early.
How long does Amazon seller verification take?
Amazon says it "usually takes three business days or less" (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). It takes longer when documents do not match or Amazon asks for more information. Prepare every document first (module 04).
Do I need to label my products for FBA in 2026?
It depends on who you are. Brand Representatives with a manufacturer barcode can ship stickerless; resellers must apply an Amazon barcode to every unit; anything without a manufacturer barcode must be labeled (Amazon Seller Forums, commingling ends). Amazon no longer preps or labels for you in the US (Packaging Insights, Oct 29, 2025).
How many products should I launch with?
One to three. Fewer SKUs mean fewer things to get wrong while you learn the account, the ads and the inbound process. Add products once the first ones have steady sales and clean numbers.
Should I use FBA or FBM for my first product?
For most small, steady products FBA is simpler, because Amazon handles shipping, customer service and returns (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon). For oversized, slow or custom items, FBM can cost less. Compare both in Amazon's Revenue Calculator (Sell on Amazon, Pricing).
When will I make my first sale?
Nobody can tell you that honestly. Listings can go live within weeks of verification, and some products sell quickly. Many take months to find steady sales and some never do. Measure the things you control: listing quality, price, stock and ad efficiency.
Can Ecom Relays launch the store for me?
Yes. Store Launch for Amazon is $1,499 and includes Account Setup, Brand Registry application support, up to 10 listings, the first FBA shipment plan and 30 days of support. You keep the account, brand, inventory and decisions. We never promise approval, sales or rankings. Store Launch does not include product research or sourcing; if you want that, see Full Relay.
