How to sell on Amazon in 2026: the free learning path

Amazon is a real business with real rules.

To sell on Amazon in 2026 you choose a selling plan ($0.99 per item or $39.99 a month), verify your identity, price every fee before buying stock, list products under the new 75-character title rule, choose FBA or your own fulfillment and protect account health. This free guide teaches each step in order, with sources.

Learn them in order, from your first listing to a brand past $1M, with every 2026 change checked against Amazon's own pages.

NEXT: Module 01 How Amazon works in 2026, FBA vs FBM and fees

Why learn Amazon in 2026?

Because the store is large, the rules are clear if you read them and the rules changed a lot this year. Amazon says selling partners account for "more than 60% of sales in Amazon's store" (2025 Small Business Empowerment Report, Apr 30, 2026). Online sales are a growing share of US retail: $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, 17.1% of all retail sales and up 12.2% from a year earlier, seasonally adjusted and subject to revision (US Census Bureau, released Aug 18, 2026). That is the market. It is not a forecast of what any one store will sell.

What has changed is the margin for error. Fees rose in January, a fuel and logistics surcharge arrived in April, titles shrank to 75 characters in July and Amazon's shopping assistant now answers shoppers' questions before they ever scroll. Sellers who learn the rules early make fewer expensive mistakes. That is the whole point of this guide.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

What does this guide cover, and in what order?

The guide follows the order real stores grow in. Each stage page tells you what to do, what it costs and what to watch.

Why this order: unit economics comes before the account because the numbers decide whether to spend at all, and the trademark comes before the account because it takes longest. The USPTO averaged 4.45 months to a first action in the first half of fiscal 2026 (USPTO), and Brand Registry accepts a pending application (Sell on Amazon, Brand Registry requirements).

How does selling on Amazon work, in one page?

  1. 01You choose a plan.

Individual costs $0.99 per item sold; Professional costs $39.99 a month plus selling fees (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). Individual is the cheaper plan below about 40 sales a month ($39.99 ÷ $0.99). Sponsored Products ads need the Professional plan (Amazon Ads, Sponsored Products).

  2. 02You pay a referral fee on each sale.

It is a percentage of the total price or a minimum, whichever is greater, set by category. Examples from Amazon's pricing page today: 15% in Home and Kitchen, Toys and Games, Sports and Outdoors and Tools and Home Improvement; 8% in Consumer Electronics; 8% up to $10 and 15% above in Baby Products and in Beauty, Health and Personal Care (Sell on Amazon, Pricing).

  3. 03You choose who ships.

With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Amazon stores, picks, packs, ships and handles customer service and returns for a fee; you pay fulfillment fees, monthly storage, aged inventory charges past 181 days and other listed fees (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon). With fulfillment by merchant (FBM) you ship yourself and own the delivery metrics.

  4. 04You get found.

Shoppers search, ask Alexa for Shopping, compare and buy. Your listing, price, reviews and delivery speed decide whether you are shown and chosen.

  5. 05You get paid on a schedule.

Since Mar 12, 2026 funds become available seven days after Amazon confirms delivery (DD+7), per Amazon's notice to sellers as quoted in Seller Forums (Amazon notice as quoted by sellers). Plan cash for that gap.

  6. 06You keep the account healthy.

Amazon tracks order defects, cancellations, late shipments and policy compliance; its guidance is an order defect rate under 1%, cancellations below 2.5% and late shipments under 4% for seller-fulfilled orders (Sell on Amazon, Selling policies).

What does it cost to start on Amazon?

There is no single number, and anyone who gives you one without seeing your product is guessing. Here are the costs you will carry, so you can price your own:

CostWhat it isWhere the number comes from
Selling plan$0.99 per item (Individual) or $39.99 a month (Professional)Amazon

New sellers can also qualify for Amazon's New Seller Incentives, which Amazon says are worth over $50,000 in credits, bonuses and exclusive benefits (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). They include 10% back on the first $50,000 in branded sales for new-to-Amazon sellers on the Professional plan who enroll their brand in Brand Registry within six months of their first eligible listing, each with conditions and expiry dates (Sell on Amazon, New Seller Incentives). Incentives lower some costs. They do not change whether your unit economics work. Module 02 shows you how to check that.

Which business model fits you?

Amazon supports several ways to sell: your own brand (private label), wholesale with brand authorization, a brand that sells its own products, bundles, handmade goods, arbitrage, dropshipping under Amazon's seller-of-record rule and selling to Amazon as a vendor. Each has different capital, time and risk. The honest comparison is on Amazon business models. Two rules worth knowing now: under Amazon's drop shipping policy "You must always be the seller of record of your products" (Amazon Seller Forums, drop shipping policy), and for approvals Amazon has said it is "unable to accept retail receipts, online order confirmations, packing slips, sales orders" as proof of supply (Amazon decline message as quoted by a seller).

What does a well-run Amazon store look like?

Good operations are quiet. Someone checks account health every business day. Reorders happen on a rule, not when someone notices. Every SKU has a margin floor, and ads are judged against it. Claims for lost or damaged units are filed every month, because claims for units lost or damaged in Amazon's fulfillment centers must be filed within 60 days of being reported lost or damaged (Amazon Seller Forums, claim windows; eComEngine, vendor report, Mar 7, 2025), and since Mar 31, 2025 losses before a customer order are paid at your manufacturing cost (Amazon Seller Forums, reimbursement policy; Amazon Seller Forums, new effective date). Titles meet the 75-character rule. Shipments are labeled to spec. The owner reads one weekly page and makes the calls that only an owner should make.

That is the craft this guide teaches, and you can do all of it yourself. If you would rather have a team do the daily work, we offer it two ways. Store Care runs a live store for a fixed, published monthly fee from $399. Full Relay, our managed store service, starts earlier, with product research and sourcing, and is paid either as a fixed monthly retainer or as a one-time fee plus a commission set in writing before work starts. Either way you keep the accounts, brand, inventory, money and decisions, access is removed within 24 hours if you leave and nobody promises sales, profit or rankings. It is owner-light, not owner-free: plan on 2 to 4 hours a week for approvals. It suits founders with a real product, or a clear plan for one, and the budget for inventory, fees and ads.

How do I use AI and automation on Amazon safely?

Amazon now offers its own assistant. Seller Assistant is open to all sellers in the US store at no additional cost (About Amazon, Seller Assistant), and since Sep 23, 2026 it can run workflows, with actions reviewed and approved by the seller before they run and logged with an audit trail (About Amazon, Seller Assistant plugin). Use automation for watching and drafting: stock alerts, account health checks, fee audits, listing drafts. Keep a person on the decisions that can hurt you: prices below your floor, appeals, supplier payments and anything that touches the account's identity or bank details. The automation page explains what we automate first and why: Amazon automation: Relay Modules.

Is selling on Amazon still worth it in 2026?

It can be, for a product with healthy unit economics and an owner who will run it carefully. Amazon is large and its rules are published, but fees, surcharges and ad costs are real and rose this year. Price one unit after every fee (module 02) before deciding. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do.

How much does it cost to start selling on Amazon?

The fixed parts are small: $0.99 per item sold or $39.99 a month for the plan (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). The real cost is inventory, freight, FBA fees, a trademark ($350 per class base fee at the USPTO), photos, barcodes and launch ads. Add them up for your product; we do not quote a typical total because products differ too much.

Do I need a company to sell on Amazon?

No. Amazon's sign-up lets you choose "None, I am an individual" as your business type (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). Many sellers still form a company for liability, tax and banking reasons. Ask your accountant. Walmart is different and requires a business tax ID.

FBA or FBM: which should I start with?

FBA hands storage, shipping, customer service and returns to Amazon for a fee (Sell on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon); FBM keeps them with you. FBA usually suits small, steady sellers; FBM can suit oversized, slow or custom items. Compare both in Amazon's Revenue Calculator (Sell on Amazon, Pricing). Module 01 walks through it.

How long does it take to get approved?

Amazon says identity verification "usually takes three business days or less" (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). Some categories and products need approval before listing (Sell on Amazon, Selling policies), and for approvals Amazon has asked for invoices from a manufacturer, distributor or supplier (Amazon decline message as quoted by a seller).

What changed with Rufus and Alexa for Shopping?

Amazon launched Alexa for Shopping, which brings Rufus and Alexa+ together (Amazon, May 13, 2026), in the Amazon Shopping app and website (About Amazon, Alexa for Shopping). It gives AI overviews in search and on product pages, compares products side by side and shows up to a year of price history. Clear titles, Item Highlights and complete attributes help it describe your product correctly (module 05).

Is this a course? Does it cost anything?

No and no. The Learning Center is free and open, with no sign-up and no certificate. It is a set of guides and short modules written by operators. Ecom Relays is an operations company, not a course or coaching program.

Can someone run my Amazon store for me?

Yes, as long as you stay the owner. Store Care runs the daily work of a live store for a fixed monthly fee. Full Relay, our managed store service, also covers product research, sourcing, setup and launch, with you approving every product, supplier, price and purchase. In both, you keep the accounts, brand, inventory and money, and nobody promises sales or profit. Expect 2 to 4 hours a week of approvals.
