Shopify changes in 2026, and what to do about each one
Shopify made more than a dozen changes in 2026 that reach into a store's checkout, tracking, apps or AI sales.
Each one below has a date from Shopify's own pages and a short list of things to check.
Quick answer
The Shopify changes that matter most in 2026: Scripts stopped running on Jun 30, 2026; non-Plus Thank you page scripts ended Aug 26, 2026; products now appear in ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Meta through Agentic Storefronts; old app script tags stop loading on Mar 1, 2027; and Stocky closed after Aug 31, 2026.

Shopify Scripts are gone. What do you do now?
What changed.
Shopify Scripts let Plus stores write custom discount, shipping and payment logic. Editing and publishing ended on Apr 15, 2026, and "All Shopify Scripts will cease to execute entirely" on Jun 30, 2026 (shopify.dev changelog, posted Apr 9, 2026). Shopify's Help Center now says: "As of June 30, 2026, Shopify Scripts has been deprecated. Any Scripts that were still published on your store have been deactivated and no longer work."
Why it matters.
If a Script gave a tiered discount, hid a shipping rate or reordered payment methods, customers now see something different from what you planned. Some stores have not noticed.
What to do.
- In the admin, go to Apps, Script Editor and click Replace Shopify Scripts. The customizations report lists what was active in three sections: Payment gateways, Shipping and Product discounts. It can be exported as a CSV (Shopify Help Center).
- Decide which rules you still need. Rules you no longer use do not need rebuilding.
- Rebuild each one with an app built on Shopify Functions, or a custom Function built in the Dev Dashboard.
- Test each rule with real orders: the right cart, the right customer, the right discount.
Did your Thank you page tracking break?
What changed.
Shopify replaced the old Thank you and Order status pages with new versions built on checkout extensibility. Plus stores had to upgrade by Aug 28, 2025. For non-Plus stores, "August 26, 2026 was the deadline" (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). The Additional scripts box in Checkout settings has been view-only since Aug 28, 2025. Upgrading replaces "your existing Thank you and Order status pages and any existing customizations on those pages."
Why it matters.
Conversion pixels, affiliate tags and survey scripts often lived in that box. If they did not move, your ad platforms may be under-reporting purchases, which makes good campaigns look bad.
What to do.
- Place a real order and check that each ad platform and analytics tool records it once, with the right value.
- Replace old scripts with apps that use checkout UI extensions and Shopify's pixel tools, or with Shopify's own channel apps.
- Re-check any post-purchase survey or upsell you used to run on that page.
Selling in ChatGPT and AI chats from Shopify
What changed.
On Jan 11, 2026 Shopify and Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, "an open standard for AI agents to connect and transact with any merchant" (Shopify News). On Mar 24, 2026 Shopify said "Products become discoverable in ChatGPT by default via Agentic Storefronts," with "no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates" and orders attributed to ChatGPT in the admin (Shopify News). Shopify's Jan 11 announcement already named Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini as channels managed from the admin, and Meta was added on Sep 8, 2026 (changelog).
How it works today.
Shopify's Help Center describes ChatGPT as "a discovery-focused referrer platform": customers "complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser." For Google, Copilot and Meta, customers buy inside the AI channel only if you have direct checkout activated. "Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores." You choose which AI channels you sell on in Sales channels, Agentic (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
Why it matters.
Shoppers are starting to ask AI tools what to buy. Traffic from AI tools converted 42% better than non-AI traffic to US retail sites in March 2026 (vendor estimate: Adobe, Apr 16, 2026). AI tools read your product data, so gaps in titles, variants or descriptions now cost visibility in more places.
What to do.
- Open the Agentic page in your admin and review channels, queries and the product data recommendations.
- Fix product data first: clear titles, complete descriptions, correct variants, real photos, accurate prices and stock.
- Check that compare-at prices are real, since Shopify now shares them with AI shopping agents (changelog, Oct 9, 2026).
- Watch AI channel orders in your reports, and handle them like any other order.
The payment provider fee and payment costs
What it is.
If you take card payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its own fee on top of that provider's: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). Shopify Payments standard online rates are 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus; the pricing page lists higher rates for some card types, and international cards add 1%.
What to do.
Look at a month of orders. Add up what you pay your provider plus Shopify's fee, and compare it with what Shopify Payments would cost at the same volume. Some stores need another provider for their product or country; the point is to know the full cost.
Why do Shopify payouts get held, and how do you avoid it?
Shopify's Help Center lists the reasons an account can be put on hold: information requirements, incorrect bank account details or product eligibility issues; a business type or model not supported on Shopify Payments; sanctions related to location; creditor or legal action; and Shopify's banking partners needing more information to verify the business. Accounts also have "standard reviews throughout their lifespan." Separately, reserves can hold funds from sales to cover disputes and refunds (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
What to do.
- Complete every business and bank detail before launch, and keep them current.
- Read Shopify's emails and admin banners the same day; only the store owner can resolve a hold. Check the email is genuine before clicking links.
- Keep dispute levels low: clear policies, accurate delivery times, tracking on every order.
- Plan cash for peak season as if a hold could happen.
Older app script tags stop loading on Mar 1, 2027
Some older apps add code to your storefront through script tags. From Oct 1, 2026 apps cannot create new ones, and "On March 1, 2027, Shopify will stop injecting script tags into storefronts" (shopify.dev changelog, posted Aug 24, 2026). App embed blocks in the theme editor replace them, and web pixels replace tags that only collect analytics.
What to do. List your apps. Ask each developer whether their app still uses storefront script tags and when they will move. Replace any app without a plan before March.
Stocky closed. What replaces purchase orders?
Shopify's Help Center says the Stocky app "will no longer be available after August 31st, 2026" and points stores to Shopify's built-in inventory management. The built-in tools cover stock by location, transfers and adjustments. Check whether your purchase order, supplier and forecasting steps are still covered; if not, use another inventory app or a written reorder routine (see the Scale guide).
Sidekick, Flow and Messaging do more inside the admin
- Sidekick
is Shopify's AI assistant in the admin. It can handle tasks such as analyzing data, managing orders or editing products, can "generate custom apps," and "presents changes for your review before applying them" (Shopify Help Center). Since Oct 13, 2026 it also helps customize checkout and customer accounts (changelog).
- Shopify Flow
is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Since Oct 15, 2026 it can buy shipping labels automatically for orders that match your conditions (changelog).
- Shopify Messaging
("formerly known as Shopify Email") added SMS marketing on Dec 10, 2025 (changelog). Stores on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus get 10,000 free emails at the start of every month (Shopify Help Center).
What to do. Review your paid apps. If a Flow workflow or a built-in tool now does the same job, test it and cancel the app. Module 08 has a quarterly app audit you can copy.
Prices and plans in 2026
Shopify's prices as published on Oct 20, 2026: Basic $39, Grow $105, Advanced $399 a month billed monthly ($29, $79 and $299 a month billed yearly); Plus from $2,300 a month (shopify.com/pricing). We found no Shopify announcement of a plan price change in 2026. Prices can change, so check shopify.com/pricing on the day you choose a plan. We re-check this line every month.

When did Shopify Scripts stop working?
Editing and publishing ended on Apr 15, 2026. All Scripts stopped running on Jun 30, 2026 (shopify.dev changelog, posted Apr 9, 2026). Shopify Functions and apps built on them replace Scripts for discount, shipping and payment logic. The Scripts customizations report under Apps, Script Editor shows which rules were active.
What happened to the Additional scripts box on the Thank you page?
It has been view-only since Aug 28, 2025. Non-Plus stores had to upgrade their Thank you and Order status pages by Aug 26, 2026; Plus stores by Aug 28, 2025 (Shopify Help Center). Tracking now runs through apps and Shopify's pixel tools.
Are my products in ChatGPT without my approval?
For eligible stores, Agentic Storefronts are on by default, and Shopify says products "become discoverable in ChatGPT by default" (Shopify News, Mar 24, 2026). You can choose which AI channels you sell on in Sales channels, Agentic. Using Agentic Storefronts also requires agreeing to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service (Shopify Help Center).
Does Shopify charge extra for sales from AI chats?
Shopify said there are "no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates" for ChatGPT sales through Agentic Storefronts (Shopify News, Mar 24, 2026). Your normal payment processing rates still apply. Watch AI channel orders in your reports and handle them like any other order.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
Shopify calls it "an open standard for AI agents to connect and transact with any merchant," co-developed by Shopify and Google and announced Jan 11, 2026. Agents can complete checkout using REST, Model Context Protocol, Agent Payments Protocol or Agent2Agent. For store owners, Shopify says "Merchants set up their data once," with AI channel integrations managed from the Shopify admin (Shopify News, read Oct 20, 2026).
Why is Shopify charging me 2% on orders?
That is likely the fee for using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments on the Basic plan. It is 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). Moving card payments to Shopify Payments removes it, if your products and country are eligible.
Why are my Shopify payouts on hold?
Shopify lists information requirements, incorrect bank account details, product eligibility, unsupported business types, sanctions, creditor or legal action and its banking partners needing to verify the business. Check the admin banner and the owner's email, provide what is asked and reply directly to Shopify's email after checking it is genuine (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026).
Did Shopify raise its prices in 2026?
On Oct 20, 2026 Shopify's pricing page shows Basic $39, Grow $105 and Advanced $399 a month billed monthly ($29, $79 and $299 billed yearly); Plus starts at $2,300. We found no Shopify announcement of a 2026 plan price change. We re-check this page monthly.
