Walmart Marketplace in 2026: every change and how to respond

Walmart Marketplace updates in 2026 came mostly in release notes that are easy to miss.

We read them, checked each one on Walmart's own pages and wrote down what to do.

The 2026 Walmart changes that matter most: two new performance standards (return rate and item not received) and a third (late shipment rate) from July; WFS long-term storage fees from Jun 30; New-Seller Savings until Jan 31, 2027; a price competitiveness score in Pro Seller; new insights dashboards; and stricter rules on inactive and long-suspended accounts.

How should you use this page?

Read the table first. Each row has the date, the change, what it means for a typical seller and the action. Then check the sections that match your setup: seller-fulfilled sellers care most about the standards and shipping changes, WFS sellers about storage and transfers, brand owners about Brand Portal, Brand Highlights and ads. Every row links to its Walmart source. Where Walmart's own pages disagree with each other, we say so.

Walmart's release notes page loads in sections, and the entries we could read run from July to October 2026. Earlier 2026 changes above come from Walmart's newsletter and guide pages, with the page date shown.

Performance standards: what changed and what to do

Walmart now measures eight standards (cancellations, on-time delivery, valid tracking, response rate, negative feedback, return rate, item not received and late shipments). Three of them are new or newly official this year: return rate, item not received rate and late shipment rate, and the refund rate is being retired. For resold items the return rate threshold rose to 9% on Jul 28, 2026.

What to do: add the three new metrics to your weekly review; report return reasons by SKU and fix listing or packaging causes; flag unshipped orders before the expected ship date; chase stuck shipments before the customer does. Full lesson: Module 06.

Fees and incentives: what changed and what to do

  • WFS long-term storage

from Jun 30, 2026: $2.25 and $7.50 per cubic foot a month after 365 and 450 days. Peak storage applies Oct to Dec every year: an extra $1.50 per cubic foot a month for items stored over 30 days. Action: send WFS cover for what sells within the year; review aged units monthly.

  • New-Seller Savings

to Jan 31, 2027: referral fee discounts (20%, 30%, 40% by GMV band), 10% off WFS fulfillment until $2K in savings, up to $1K in SEM rebates, up to $500 in Walmart Connect credits. Opt in after go-live. Walmart's pages give the first go-live date as "after February 1, 2026" in one place and "after February 2" in another.

  • Customer Favorites

referral fee discounts up to 100% for competitively priced items fulfilled through WFS, which Walmart may end if demand drops.

  • Pro Seller

referral fee discounts on qualified Pro listings: 10% for Pro, 5% for Advanced.

Listings, content and brand: what changed and what to do

Product claims are stricter (Jun 5): Made in the USA claims must match across images, packaging and attributes, and conflicting origin details unpublish the item. Pro Seller now scores price competitiveness (Jun 26). The Listing Quality dashboard gives bulk recommendations (Sep 14). Brand owners gained Brand Highlights (October) and brand ads now clearly need Brand Portal (Oct 1). Automotive sellers face new product types (Oct 19). Action: run a claims audit on your catalog this month, work the Listing Quality recommendations on your top 20 items and register your brand in Brand Portal if you have a registered trademark.

Fulfillment and shipping: what changed and what to do

Late shipment rate is a standard. Speed Insights (Sep 10) recommends ways to deliver faster. Ship with Walmart labels are cheaper for eligible fast shippers (Sep 4). The Walmart+ badge uses a 14-day lookback (Sep 9). Simplified Shipping Settings are easier to adopt (Oct 7). More carriers are approved (Oct 13). USPS may assess a $50 noncompliance fee on hazmat packages with missing or incorrect markings, effective Jul 12, 2026 (Walmart release note, Oct 15). WFS added GTIN exemptions (Jul 15) and Inventory Transfer Service tracking (Jul 24). MCS added providers and App Store connection (Jul 9).

Action: set ship times you can meet every day, not only on a good day; migrate shipping settings in January, not in peak; check hazmat markings; confirm your carrier list.

Account and policy: what changed and what to do

Two policy changes raise the cost of neglect. Accounts inactive for 455 consecutive days may be suspended, after notice, with a 90-day appeal window (Oct 5). Accounts that stay suspended beyond a reasonable threshold without a successful appeal may be terminated (Oct 2). Action: if you pause selling, keep the account active or close it on purpose; if you are suspended, appeal promptly with a real fix rather than waiting.

The safe practice does not change: never buy, rent or share a seller account, and give every agency or staff member their own named user.

Tools and AI: what changed and what to do

Marty, Walmart's GenAI assistant for sellers, is linked from the Seller Center home page and helps find answers and tools (Marketplace resources and support, updated Mar 6, 2026). New or updated this year: the Growth Incentives page, Speed Insights, more detail in Returns insights, Pro Seller AI insights and Listing Quality recommendations. On the shopper side, Walmart introduced Sparky, a GenAI shopping assistant in the Walmart app, in June 2025 (corporate.walmart.com, Jun 6, 2025). Action: complete attributes and plain, factual key features help both search and AI assistants read your items; we have found no Walmart document that explains how Sparky chooses products, so treat claims that it can be "optimized for" with care.

What should you do this month?

  • Add return rate, item not received rate and late shipment rate to your weekly review.
  • Pull your WFS aged inventory report; plan every unit over 300 days.
  • Audit product claims, especially Made in the USA.
  • Check price competitiveness on your top 20 items.
  • New seller? Opt in to New-Seller Savings after go-live, before Jan 31, 2027.
  • Peak season: WFS storage surcharge runs Oct to Dec; send cover, not hope.
  • Brand owner? Register in Brand Portal and prepare Brand Highlights images and video.
