Walmart seller problems and how to fix them
Almost every Walmart problem has a published rule behind it.
The most common Walmart seller problems are stalled applications, unpublished items, price rule errors, lost buy boxes, performance warnings, overselling, aged WFS stock, WFS chargebacks and lost units, high return rates and suspensions. Each has a cause you can find in Seller Center and a fix you control. Start with the account-level problems, then work item by item.
Find the rule and you have found the fix.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
Walmart seller problems when you are starting out
- "Our seller application keeps stalling."
- Cause:
details that do not match across the tax record, business documents, bank or payout account and the application; barcodes that do not trace to your GS1 company prefix; payments setup not finished. Walmart declines the account if payments setup is not done within 30 days of entering business details (Complete onboarding, updated Aug 31, 2026).
- Fix:
build one document set where the legal name, address and tax ID match everywhere; have photo ID ready (Walmart may ask for facial recognition); finish payments setup in the first week; check every GTIN against your GS1 account.
- Module or service:
Account Setup ($299; you submit in your own name; Walmart decides).
- Measure:
days from submission to approval; number of verification requests.
- "Walmart declined our application."
- Cause:
Walmart is selective and looks for a history of marketplace or ecommerce success, a compliant catalog and US returns capability. It does not publish reasons in every case.
- Fix:
read any reason given; close the gap (selling record, documents, fulfillment) before you reapply; if you have no selling record, build one on another channel first.
- Module or service:
Launch Readiness Check (free, written go or no-go).
- Measure:
requirements met before reapplying.
- "Our payouts are on hold."
- Cause:
the New Seller Payment Hold applies after you start selling while you build sales history; its length depends on your country of incorporation (Complete onboarding).
- Fix:
plan cash for it; keep performance clean; check the payout provider (Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party provider; ACH is not available).
- Module or service:
Profit and Cash Pulse (payouts held and when they land).
- Measure:
days from sale to payout.
Listings and pricing
- "Walmart unpublished our item."
- Cause:
a price that fails Walmart's reasonable price check ("Reasonable Price Not Satisfied") or a price far below the market ("Pricing Error"), a missing primary image, an offer end date that has passed or a policy violation such as a conflicting product claim (Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025; Why is my item unpublished, updated Aug 1, 2025; Product claims policy, updated Jun 5, 2026).
- Fix:
find the reason on the Unpublished items dashboard (Catalog > Unpublished items > Listing issues > View items) and fix that cause. Walmart says price and shipping fixes typically republish within 48 hours.
- Module or service:
Catalog Ready ($750).
- Measure:
unpublished count and days unpublished, daily.
Full guide with every reason code: Walmart item unpublished: why it happens and how to republish.
- "It says Reasonable Price Not Satisfied."
- Cause:
your item price plus shipping is "egregiously higher than prices currently or recently offered" on Walmart.com or competing sites. Walmart compares with a reference price built from competitor match price, historical selling price, buy box winner price, average offer price and Walmart's own prices (Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025).
- Fix:
read the reference price on the dashboard; check your margin at that price; lower the price or the shipping charge (in the template, not the item price), submit an external price match if Walmart compared the wrong product or leave the item unpublished if the price is below your floor.
- Module or service:
Margin Guard (advanced, $1,500 to $3,500); Catalog Ready. Worked floor example: module 04.
- Measure:
items unpublished for price; contribution per unit at the reference price.
- "Our item is live but has no Add to Cart button."
- Cause:
the offer is priced well above recent or competitor prices but not high enough to unpublish, so it lost buy box eligibility and sits under other seller options.
- Fix:
lower the price; eligibility can take up to four hours to return. Check the buy box eligible column in your item report.
- Measure:
items with buy box eligible "No".
- "Walmart says our price is too low."
- Cause:
a pricing error unpublish for an offer far below the market, usually a typo, a feed error or a repricer with no floor.
- Fix:
raise the price to a reasonable level; if the low price was intentional, send documentation through Seller Center Help. Add a minimum price to every item in Repricer.
- Module or service:
Margin Guard.
- Measure:
items without a minimum price (target: none).
- "Items went unpublished after we changed our claims."
- Cause:
Walmart's product claims policy (updated Jun 5, 2026): Made in the USA claims must match across images, packaging and attributes; conflicting origin information unpublishes the item; biodegradable, compostable and PFAS claims are restricted.
- Fix:
audit every claim; make images, packaging and attributes agree; remove claims you cannot support.
- Module or service:
Catalog Ready.
- Measure:
unpublished items with a policy reason.
- "We are on Walmart, but we rarely win the buy box."
- Cause:
price, shipping cost, slow delivery promises, stockouts or weak content. Walmart weighs all six buy box factors.
- Fix:
floors and ceilings in Repricer; shipping cost in the template; faster delivery through WFS or your 3PL; content to Listing Quality standards; track Pro Seller metrics.
- Module or service:
Margin Guard; Store Care Plus or Ops Desk.
- Measure:
buy box share on top items, weekly.
Performance and account health
- "We got a performance standards warning."
- Cause:
one of eight metrics outside Walmart's threshold. Walmart expects immediate action; otherwise the account may face suppression, suspension or termination (Seller performance standards, updated Jul 28, 2026).
- Fix:
find the metric; fix the root cause, not only the number (stock sync for cancellations, ship times for late shipments, inbox ownership for response rate); document what you changed.
- Module or service:
Account Health Watch ($750); daily checks on Store Care and Ops Desk.
- Measure:
each standard, daily; time from warning to action. Each standard explained: module 06.
Thresholds in one table: Walmart seller performance standards guide.
- "Our late shipments are creeping up."
- Cause:
late shipment rate became a standard in July 2026 (5% or below). Usual causes: handling times you cannot meet on busy days, carrier pickup cutoffs, unshipped weekend orders.
- Fix:
set ship times you can meet every day; flag unshipped orders before the expected ship date; use Speed Insights.
- Measure:
late shipment rate and on-time delivery, daily.
- "We cancel orders because the stock sold somewhere else."
- Cause:
the same units listed on Amazon, Walmart and Shopify without one stock count; slow sync.
- Fix:
one available-to-sell number per SKU, buffers per channel, bundles mapped to components.
- Module or service:
Stock Flow (advanced).
- Measure:
cancellation rate (Walmart standard: 2% or below).
- "Our return rate is over 6%."
- Cause:
listing content that sets the wrong expectation, sizing, packaging damage, wrong item shipped. The standard counts seller-related returns on orders delivered in the past 60 days; 9% for resold items.
- Fix:
read return reasons by SKU in Returns insights (Sep 11, 2026); fix the content, the size chart or the packaging; check pick accuracy at your 3PL.
- Module or service:
Returns Relay ($750).
- Measure:
return rate by SKU, monthly.
- "Our account is suspended."
- Cause:
missed standards, policy violations or an account-level issue. Suspension makes all listings non-transactable and not discoverable, restricts Seller Center and holds payments. Accounts that stay suspended beyond a reasonable threshold without a successful appeal may be terminated (Seller suspension and termination, updated Oct 2, 2026).
- Fix:
read the notice; stop the cause (pause feeds, fix stock sync); collect evidence; write a plan that fixes the root cause; appeal promptly.
- Module or service:
reinstatement appeal $750 per case ($500 on a monthly plan). Walmart decides every appeal; nobody can promise reinstatement.
- Measure:
time to appeal; issues fixed at the root.
- "Our account went quiet and now Walmart warned us."
- Cause:
since Oct 5, 2026, accounts inactive for 455 consecutive days may be suspended, after email and SMS notice, with a 90-day appeal window.
- Fix:
keep the account active or close it on purpose; respond to notices inside the window.
- Measure:
last active date.
WFS and fulfillment
- "Our WFS stock is getting old."
- Cause:
over-ordering into WFS. Since Jun 30, 2026 Walmart charges long-term storage of $2.25 per cubic foot a month at 366 to 450 days and $7.50 over 450 days, on top of normal storage, and Oct to Dec adds $1.50 for items stored over 30 days (WFS fees, updated May 27, 2026).
- Fix:
review aged units monthly; plan every unit over 300 days: sell through with a price plan, move to your 3PL, remove or dispose (disposal from $0.35 a unit up to 2 lb; removal adds $0.40 a lb shipping). Send cover, not bulk.
- Module or service:
Stock Flow (aged-stock alerts).
- Measure:
units and cubic feet over 300 and 365 days.
- "WFS charged us prep chargebacks."
- Cause:
units arrived with a missing or wrong label ($0.65 a unit) or poly bag ($0.80 a unit) (WFS fees).
- Fix:
label and bag to Walmart's rules before units leave your warehouse; a photo check on each inbound; supplier prep instructions in writing.
- Module or service:
WFS management on Store Care or Ops Desk.
- Measure:
chargeback units per inbound.
- "WFS lost units at receiving."
- Cause:
units lost or misplaced after delivery to a fulfillment center.
- Fix:
open an investigation between 10 and 50 days after delivery, with proof of delivery or signed bills of lading showing shipment IDs and case counts. Walmart reimburses estimated sale proceeds if WFS was responsible and accepts no appeals (WFS receiving issues, updated Aug 6, 2026).
- Module or service:
reimbursement claims, included in every monthly plan with no commission.
- Measure:
claims filed inside the window; amounts paid.
Which problem should you fix first?
Account-level problems first (suspension, warnings, inactive notices), then problems that stop sales today (unpublished items, buy box ineligible), then problems that cost margin (aged WFS stock, chargebacks, return rate), then growth problems (buy box share, content).

What is the most common Walmart seller problem?
Walmart does not publish a ranking. In our keyword research (Oct 2026), unpublished items are among the Walmart seller problems searched most, and price is a common reason. Walmart compares your price plus shipping with a reference price and unpublishes offers far above it. The reason is shown in Seller Center, and price fixes typically republish within 48 hours.
How do I contact Walmart Seller Support?
In Seller Center, select Help, then Contact support, describe the issue in 5 to 200 words and pick a category. Marty, Walmart's GenAI assistant, is also on the Seller Center home page (Marketplace resources and support, updated Mar 6, 2026).
Can a suspended Walmart account be reinstated?
Sometimes. Walmart decides every appeal. A strong appeal explains the root cause, what you changed and how you will prevent it. Do not wait: Walmart says accounts suspended beyond a reasonable threshold without a successful appeal may be terminated.
Why did Walmart unpublish all my items at once?
Usually an account-level cause: suppression, a pause or suspension, missed standards, a change to account details or a feed that sent bad prices or zero stock. Check Seller Center notifications first, then your feeds.
How do I avoid WFS long-term storage fees?
Send cover for what sells within the year, review aged units monthly and plan any unit over 300 days before it reaches 366. Disposal and removal fees are usually smaller than months of long-term storage at $2.25 or $7.50 per cubic foot.
Does Walmart reimburse lost WFS inventory?
Yes, when WFS was responsible and you open a receiving claim between 10 and 50 days after delivery with the documents Walmart asks for. Walmart pays estimated sale proceeds based on average sales price and does not accept appeals.
What if my return rate is above 6%?
Find the cause by SKU in Returns insights, then fix the listing, size chart, packaging or pick accuracy. Resold items have a 9% threshold. Watch it monthly: the standard counts orders delivered in the past 60 days.
Do you fix these problems for us?
Yes, on Store Care (from $399 a month) and Ops Desk (from $1,499 a month), or as one-time work: Catalog Ready from $750, a reinstatement appeal at $750 ($500 on a monthly plan). Nobody can promise Walmart's decisions.
