COMPARE

Compare your ecommerce operations options

Honest comparisons of the ways to get your store's daily work done, with prices, terms and the cases where we are not the answer

Every comparison is dated and sourced

There are six common ways to get an Amazon, Walmart or Shopify store's daily work done: do it yourself, hire a virtual assistant, hire an agency, buy AI tools, hire in-house or use a managed operations team. The right one depends on who owns the result, whose time goes into managing it and what you can afford each month. The pages below compare ecommerce operations options one decision at a time, with 2026 prices, a source and date on every number and a plain list of the cases where we are not the answer.

Which comparison do you need?

Start with the question you are actually asking. Each page answers one decision, shows its sources under every table and ends with a list of situations where a different option beats ours.

Ecommerce virtual assistant vs agency vs operations team

The question: should I hire a VA, an agency or a team? Six options side by side, with 2026 costs, the hours each one costs you to manage and a weekly scorecard you can use with anyone.

In-house vs outsourced ecommerce operations

The question: should I outsource operations at all? A five-point test, the first-year cost of one hire against outside options, the trade-offs that never show on an invoice, the contract terms to check and how to switch models without dropping work.

Ecommerce agency vs operations team

The question: my agency runs ads, so who runs operations? A 24-task table of who usually does what, how each is paid and how the two work side by side.

Building an in-house ecommerce team vs Ecom Relays

The question: if I build the team myself, which roles do I need and what does each cost? The seven jobs an ecommerce team covers, the fully loaded cost of each role at BLS median pay and a hire-or-hand-off table set against our published plans.

Dedicated ops team vs freelancers

The question: should I hire full-time people through a managed team or piece the work together from freelancers? Supervision, continuity, security and the real monthly cost of each.

How to vet a done-for-you store provider

The question: is this store service legitimate? Twelve checks on ownership, fees, earnings claims, access and contracts, with the FTC cases that shaped them.

Managed store service vs store-for-sale program

The question: how do I tell a service that runs my store from a program that sells me one? Ownership, fees, FTC warning signs and what each one asks of you.

This is the short version of the full tables. The two columns that matter most are what it costs and who has to manage the work, because the second one is usually you.

Two more ways we work sit outside this table because they solve narrower problems. Our Dedicated Ops Team gives you named full-time people, with each salary passed through at cost and a $399 monthly management fee per person. Full Relay, our managed store service, adds product research and sourcing for founders starting from zero. Both are compared on their own pages above.

Run the numbers before you choose

A comparison table tells you the ranges. Your own numbers tell you the answer. Two free calculators do the arithmetic, with every default labeled and sourced.

Our own prices and terms are on pricing, in full, with what you pay platforms and suppliers directly.

How we write comparisons

We sell one of the options on these pages, so you should know the rules we hold ourselves to.

  • Every price has a source and a date, and vendor figures are labeled as vendor estimates.
  • Other companies are cited only for their published facts. We compare models, not named competitors, and we do not write attack pages.
  • Every comparison says when we are the wrong choice, and says it plainly.
  • We review each page at least once a quarter and show the date it was last updated.
  • Corrections go to contact@ecomrelays.com. If a number is wrong, we fix it and note the change on the page.

The full standard is in our editorial policy.

What does ecommerce outsourcing cost?

A full-time virtual assistant costs about $1,000 to $2,600 a month (Outsource Accelerator, Sep 1, 2026; Stealth Agents, Jun 25, 2026) and a marketplace agency $1,500 to $25,000+ a month by revenue band (SupplyKick, Sep 14, 2026). All three are vendor estimates. An in-house operations manager costs about $90,650 a year with benefits before recruiting and tools. Ecom Relays starts at $399 a month for new stores and $1,499 a month for brands at $1M+.

What can I outsource?

The repeat work that keeps a store running: inventory and purchase orders, listings and catalog fixes, order exceptions, tier-one customer support, returns, 3PL coordination and invoice checks, account health, reimbursement claims and reporting. Decisions about price, product and spend stay with you whichever option you choose, and a good provider asks for your approval in writing.

Is outsourcing safe for my seller account?

It can be, if access is set up properly. The agency gets its own access through Amazon's service provider authorization, a limited Walmart role while you keep Admin and Shopify collaborator access. Nobody gets your password, and nobody gets bank, payout or legal-entity permissions. Our rules are on security and access.

Do I need an agency or an operations team?

If your gap is advertising, creative or brand growth and operations already run well, an agency fits. If stockouts, order problems, account health warnings and 3PL errors keep landing on you, the gap is operations. Some brands need both, with written lanes so nobody doubles up or drops work.

Can I keep my in-house person and still outsource?

Yes, and many brands do. A common setup is an in-house lead who owns decisions and suppliers, with an outside team running the repeat work and the systems behind it. Your person keeps the knowledge; the team removes the busywork and gives them one dashboard.

Do you compare yourselves with named agencies?

Not by name. We compare models, such as a VA, an agency or an in-house hire, using other companies' published prices as sources. Named comparisons need proof we do not have yet as a new company, and we will not write one without it.
