Start selling on Walmart Marketplace, step by step: zero to first sales
To start selling on Walmart Marketplace, step by step: confirm you meet Walmart's requirements, price your product per unit after every fee, apply in Seller Center with matching business documents, finish payments setup within 30 days, choose WFS or your own fulfillment, set up items with GS1 GTINs, price inside Walmart's pricing rules and opt in to New-Seller Savings.
Walmart approval is a document test and launch is an operations test. This page is the learning path, written from Walmart's own onboarding pages, with a lesson behind each step. If you are still deciding whether Walmart is right for you, read our how to sell on Walmart guide first.
Are you ready to apply?
Walmart chooses its sellers. Before you spend time on the application, check yourself against this list. If you cannot tick most of it, start on another channel first and come back with a selling record.
- A real product you own or are authorized to sell, with stock you can pay for.
- A registered business with a business tax ID (EIN). Walmart does not accept a Social Security number.
- GS1 barcodes (GTINs) for each product, or a plan to request an exemption where Walmart allows one.
- A history of marketplace or ecommerce sales you can show.
- A way to ship fast and take returns in the US: WFS or a US warehouse with returns capability.
- A budget for inventory, fees, freight and ads, and 2 to 4 hours a week for decisions.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
How do you start selling on Walmart Marketplace, step by step?
In eight steps, in this order. The paperwork and the math come before the application, because Walmart judges both.
Step 1. What does Walmart require from new sellers?
| Requirement | What Walmart asks for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Business identity | Business tax ID (SSNs are not accepted) or business license number; documents verifying business name and address | Walmart Marketplace FAQ, read Oct 20, 2026 |
| Track record | "History of marketplace or eCommerce success" | same |
| Product IDs | GTIN or UPC with a GS1 company prefix; exemptions can be requested for items without a product ID | same; Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding (updated Aug 31, 2026) |
| Catalog | Complies with Walmart's Prohibited Products Policy | Walmart Marketplace FAQ |
| Fulfillment | WFS or another B2C US warehouse with returns capability; a verifiable return address | same; Complete onboarding |
| Payments | An account with a compatible payment processor; payments setup done within 30 days of entering business details or the account is declined | same |
| Identity | Personal ID of the applicant or legal representative; Walmart may require photo ID and facial recognition | Complete onboarding |
Walmart describes Marketplace as an option for "select third-party retailers" (corporate.walmart.com, Apply to be a supplier). It does not publish an approval rate or a review time. Module 01 explains how Marketplace works, and module 02 covers the application line by line.
Step 2. Will your product make money on Walmart?
Do this before you apply, not after your first shipment. For each product, work out what is left per unit after Walmart's fees.
Contribution per unit = price minus referral fee minus fulfillment fee minus landed cost minus ad cost per unit minus return cost per unit
| Line | Example | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $24.99 | Your planned price, checked against similar items on Walmart.com |
| Referral fee at 15% | $3.75 | Walmart's referral fee schedule (15% for "Everything Else" and categories such as Books and Toys & Games; updated Mar 9, 2026) |
| WFS fulfillment, standard item up to 1 lb | $3.45 | Walmart WFS fees (updated May 27, 2026) |
| Landed cost | $8.00 | Your purchase price, freight, duty and prep |
| Ad cost per unit | $2.00 | Planned Walmart Connect spend divided by expected units |
| What is left per unit | $7.79 | Before storage, returns and overheads |
Illustrative · sample figures. The fee rates are Walmart's; the item, landed cost and ad cost are examples, not a forecast for any product. Items with a retail price under $10 pay an extra $1 per unit in WFS fulfillment.
If the number is thin, the product may not fit Walmart at today's market price. Our free Launch Readiness Check runs this math for each channel and tells you in writing where to start.
Step 3. How do you apply and verify your business?
Walmart's onboarding in Seller Center runs in three parts (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding, updated Aug 31, 2026):
- 01Express setup (optional).
Import your business details and listings from another marketplace through Versori, or skip it and set up items another way.
- 02Business verification.
Legal business name, entity type, business phone and state registration number; the applicant's personal ID; possibly photo ID and facial recognition. Verification takes "from a few minutes to a few business days". Tax details must match your official documents exactly.
- 03Payments.
You have 30 days after entering business details to finish payments setup, or the account is declined and you reapply. ACH direct deposit is not available: payouts go to Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party payout provider.
After you start selling, a New Seller Payment Hold applies while you build sales history. Its length depends on your country of incorporation. Plan cash for it.
What stalls applications most often: a business name spelled differently on the tax record, the bank account and the application; an address that does not match the registration; barcodes that do not trace to your GS1 company prefix. Fix the mismatch before you submit.
Step 4. Should you use WFS or ship orders yourself?
You choose at store setup and can change shipping settings later.
| WFS | Seller-fulfilled (you or your 3PL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks, packs and ships | Walmart | You |
| Customer service and returns for those orders | Walmart | You |
| Performance metrics | Walmart handles most for WFS orders, except negative feedback rate | All eight are yours |
| Fees | Fulfillment from $3.45 a unit, storage, peak and long-term storage | Your carrier and 3PL costs |
| Setup | Billing method verified in 2 to 3 business days; country of origin, dimensions, hazmat data | Transit times calculated by Walmart, or manual settings with return label, return center and fulfillment center details |
Sources: Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding (Aug 31, 2026) and Seller performance standards (Jul 28, 2026). Walmart reports that WFS sellers see an average 50% GMV growth on items with the "Fulfilled by Walmart" tag and delivery promises of two days or less (Walmart Marketplace home page, data Feb 1, 2025 to Mar 27, 2026). That is Walmart's own average, not a forecast for your items. Module 05 compares both per SKU.
Step 5. How do you set up your first items?
Catalog setup opens only after verification, payments and store setup are complete. Then:
- Set up items one at a time, in bulk or by importing from another marketplace.
- Use your GS1 GTIN for each item. If an item has no product ID, request a GTIN exemption; since Jul 15, 2026 that includes eligible WFS items (Walmart release notes).
- Fill every required attribute for the product type, then the optional ones that describe the product.
- Write the item name, key features and description in plain, factual language (module 03). Walmart's Listing Quality score measures content, price competitiveness, shipping speed, published and in-stock status and reviews (Listing Quality overview, updated Apr 9, 2026).
- Submit an external price match at setup if your item could be compared with the wrong product.
- Check claims: "Made in the USA" must match across images, packaging and attributes, or the item is unpublished (Product claims policy, updated Jun 5, 2026).
Account setup can take up to four hours to finalize after you add inventory. Items publish only once setup is complete.
Step 6. How do you price inside Walmart's rules?
Walmart automatically unpublishes offers priced "egregiously higher than prices currently or recently offered", and it counts shipping as well as price. Offers priced well above the market but not high enough to unpublish lose the Add to Cart button (Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025). So:
- Set a floor per item: the lowest price at which the contribution per unit still works.
- Set a ceiling near the market price on Walmart.com and other sites.
- If you use Walmart's Repricer, every item needs a minimum and a maximum before it can join a strategy. Price changes can take up to four hours (Repricer overview, updated May 26, 2026).
Module 04 explains the reference price and the buy box.
Step 7. What is New-Seller Savings, and how do you claim it?
New-Seller Savings is Walmart's offer for new sellers, worth up to $75K in incentives in total, with conditions. It runs from Feb 2, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027. Sellers must go live after Feb 1, 2026 and opt in after the store goes live (Walmart Marketplace, New-Seller Savings pages, read Oct 20, 2026; Learn overview updated Sep 2, 2026).
| Incentive | What Walmart offers | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fees | 20% off base referral fees on your first $50K in GMV; 30% off from $50K to $500K; 40% off above $500K | Once your store is live |
| WFS | 10% off fulfillment fees until you reach $2K in savings | Redeemed as reimbursements |
| Search engine marketing | 50% rebate, up to $1K in credits | After eligible ad spend |
| Walmart Connect | Up to $500 in ad credits | New advertiser; Ad Center account in good standing with an admin user; at least one item with Content Quality of 80 or more; at least one item with shipping of three days or less or WFS |
Walmart decides eligibility, and savings vary by seller. Walmart's own pages differ on the first go-live date ("after February 1" and "after February 2"); confirm yours in Seller Center.
Step 8. What should you do in your first 30 days?
| When | Check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Every business day | Orders shipped with valid tracking; messages answered | Valid tracking 99%+, replies within 48 hours |
| Every business day | Unpublished items and their reasons | Price, image or date problems stop sales |
| Every business day | Stock levels on every channel | Overselling turns into cancellations (standard: 2% or below) |
| Weekly | Listing Quality score on your top items | Content and price competitiveness drive visibility |
| Weekly | Contribution per unit with real fees and ad cost | Catch a losing item early |
| Monthly | Payout timing and the payment hold | Cash planning |
Expect slow first weeks. A new seller with no reviews and no sales history usually needs time, ads and fast delivery before the buy box and search placement improve. Module 06 explains each standard in this table.
When does it make sense to get help?
If you would rather spend your hours on product and suppliers, we help new Walmart sellers three ways, all at published prices:
- Launch Readiness Check (free):
fees and margin per unit on each channel, a paperwork check and an honest go or no-go, in writing within 3 business days.
- Account Setup ($299):
an application pack you submit in your own name, with verification support. No approval guarantee: Walmart decides. Credited in full to a Walmart Launch bought within 30 days.
- Walmart Launch ($1,499):
application and onboarding support, up to 25 items set up to Walmart's content rules, WFS onboarding and first inbound (or your 3PL connected), pricing rules you approve in writing and 30 days of support.
You keep the account, the brand, the inventory, the money and every decision. Choosing what to sell stays your decision, and Walmart Launch does not include product research or sourcing. If you want a team to research and source products with you, that is Full Relay on Walmart, our managed store service.
Problems and fixes on this page
| Problem in your words | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Our application keeps stalling." | Documents that do not match; missing payments setup | One matching document set; payments finished inside 30 days | Account Setup ($299) | Days from submission to approval |
| "We do not know if Walmart should be our first channel." | No per-unit math across channels | Contribution per unit on each channel | Launch Readiness Check (free) | Written go or no-go |
| "Our first items went unpublished." | Price far above the reference price, missing primary image, an end date that has passed | Fix the cause shown in Seller Center | Catalog Ready (from $750) | Unpublished count, daily |

How much does it cost to start selling on Walmart?
Walmart charges no setup or monthly fee. You pay a referral fee on each sale, set by category (15% for "Everything Else"), plus your own costs: inventory, GS1 barcodes, freight, WFS or shipping and ads. Budget for a New Seller Payment Hold at the start, because early payouts are held while you build sales history.
How long does Walmart approval take?
Walmart says business verification takes from a few minutes to a few business days, but it does not publish a review time for the application itself. Third-party guides report two to four weeks (Threecolts, Jul 2025), which is an estimate, not Walmart's figure. Missing documents and mismatched details are the usual cause of delay.
Can I sell on Walmart with an SSN instead of an EIN?
No. Walmart's FAQ says SSNs are not accepted; you need a business tax ID or a business license number, and your tax details must match your official business documents. Ask your accountant or attorney which entity type suits you before you apply.
Do I need GS1 barcodes to sell on Walmart?
Walmart asks for GTINs or UPCs with a GS1 company prefix. Items without a product identifier can be put forward for a GTIN exemption, and since Jul 15, 2026 eligible WFS items can be too (Walmart release notes). Barcodes bought from resellers that do not trace to your company are a common reason items fail.
What happens if I miss the 30-day payments deadline?
Walmart declines the account and you have to reapply. The 30 days start when you enter your business details. Have your payout account ready (Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party payout provider; ACH direct deposit is not available) before you begin.
Can I sell on Walmart with no sales history?
Walmart lists a history of marketplace or ecommerce success as a requirement, so a seller with none is less likely to be approved. Many sellers start on their own store or another marketplace, build a record, then apply. Your Launch Readiness Check says plainly if Walmart should wait.
Is New-Seller Savings automatic?
Partly. Walmart's pages say you must opt in after your store goes live, and some incentives need extra steps, such as a Walmart Connect Ad Center account and an item with a Content Quality score of 80 or more. Walmart decides eligibility. The offer ends Jan 31, 2027.
When will I make my first sale?
Walmart does not publish a figure and neither do we. First sales depend on your price against the market, delivery speed, content and ads. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do.
