NEXT: Module 01 How Walmart Marketplace works in 2026

Walmart Marketplace lets approved third-party sellers list products on Walmart.com and pay a referral fee on each sale, with no setup or monthly fee. Approval is selective: Walmart asks for a business tax ID, GS1 barcodes, a selling track record and US returns capability. After approval, sales depend on item quality, pricing rules, delivery speed and eight performance standards.

Why are sellers looking at Walmart in 2026?

Because Walmart's marketplace is growing faster than Walmart itself, and it has far fewer sellers than the largest marketplaces. Here are the numbers, with their sources.

  • Walmart U.S. marketplace net sales grew more than 50% in the quarter that ended Jul 31, 2026. Nearly 50% of the marketplace business flowed through fulfillment services. Walmart Connect, Walmart's US advertising business, grew 43% excluding VIZIO (Walmart Q2 FY27 earnings release, corporate.walmart.com, Aug 20, 2026).
  • Walmart says that each week approximately 280 million customers and members visit its more than 10,900 stores and its ecommerce sites, worldwide (Walmart Marketplace home page, Walmart first-party data, Jan 2026; page modified Oct 1, 2026).
  • Walmart Marketplace crossed 200,000 active sellers in June 2025 (Marketplace Pulse, Jun 12, 2025).
  • US online retail sales were 17.1% of all retail sales in Q2 2026, seasonally adjusted and subject to revision (US Census Bureau, released Aug 18, 2026).

That is the market. It is not a forecast of what any one store will earn.

Walmart is also a harder place to be careless. Walmart chooses who sells, unpublishes items priced far above its reference price, measures every seller on eight standards and charges long-term storage on WFS stock held over 365 days. The sellers who do well treat it as an operations job, not a listing job. That is what this guide teaches.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

How does Walmart Marketplace work?

Walmart Marketplace is the part of Walmart.com where approved third-party sellers sell their own inventory next to Walmart's. You apply, Walmart verifies your business and you list items on Walmart's item pages. Several sellers can offer the same item; the offer Walmart rates highest on price, shipping speed, shipping cost, in-stock rate, content and post-purchase experience wins the buy box (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025). You ship orders yourself or through Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS). Walmart takes a referral fee on each completed sale and pays you the rest.

What does it cost to sell on Walmart?

Walmart charges no setup, monthly or hidden fees; you pay a referral fee on each completed sale (Walmart Marketplace, Pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). Everything else is the cost of running the business.

The one formula to learn before anything else:

Contribution per unit = price minus referral fee minus fulfillment fee minus landed cost minus ad cost per unit minus return cost per unit

Illustrative · sample figures: a $24.99 item in a 15% category pays $3.75 in referral fee and $3.45 in WFS fulfillment (standard item up to 1 lb). With a landed cost of $8.00 and ad cost of $2.00 per unit, $7.79 is left before storage, returns and overheads. The fee rates are Walmart's; the item, landed cost and ad cost are examples, not a forecast.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

What does Walmart measure you on?

Eight performance standards. Miss one and Walmart expects you to act at once; if you do not, your account "may face suppression, suspension or termination" (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Seller performance standards, updated Jul 28, 2026).

StandardWalmart's threshold
Cancellation rate2% or below
On-time delivery rate90% or above
Valid tracking rate99% or above
Seller response rate95% or above, answered within 48 hours
Negative feedback rate2% or below (past 60 days)
Return rate6% or below; 9% for resold items (past 60 days)
Item not received rate2% or below (past 60 days)
Late shipment rate5% or below

If you use WFS, Walmart handles most of these for WFS orders, except negative feedback rate. Pro Seller asks for more: 95% on-time delivery, cancellations of 1.5% or below and content and price competitiveness scores of 75% or above (Walmart Marketplace, Pro Seller, modified Jun 26, 2026).

Which business model fits Walmart?

Walmart works for brand owners, private label sellers and authorized wholesalers. It works less well for resellers without brand permission. Walmart's own supplier page describes Marketplace as an option for "select third-party retailers" (corporate.walmart.com, Apply to be a supplier). The main choices:

  • Brand owner or private label

on Marketplace, with Brand Portal for content control (needs a USPTO-registered trademark).

  • Wholesale with authorization

from the brand, set up as an authorized reseller.

  • Multichannel expansion

    from Amazon or Shopify.

  • Marketplace seller (3P) or Walmart supplier (1P).

    Different applications, different control.

  • WFS or seller-fulfilled.

A fulfillment decision with fee and metric consequences.

  • A managed store service.

Which tools do Walmart sellers use?

Start with Walmart's own tools in Seller Center, most of which cost nothing extra: Repricer, the Listing Quality dashboard, Search Insights, Assortment Growth, Speed Insights, Returns insights, the Pro Seller page, Walmart Connect, Brand Portal and Ship with Walmart. Add third-party tools only when a job outgrows them: a listing and inventory platform when you sell on more than one channel, an accounting connector when settlements get hard to reconcile, a helpdesk when messages pile up.

Full list by job, verified on each tool's own site: Walmart tools and apps.

What should you automate first on Walmart?

Automate the checks that protect the account before the tasks that save time. In order: one stock count across channels (overselling turns into cancellations), daily account health alerts, price floor checks against Walmart's pricing rules, catalog checks for unpublished items and claims tracking. Keep people on decisions: price changes below your floor, appeals and large refunds.

Is Walmart Marketplace worth it in 2026?

It can be, for a seller with a real product, clean paperwork and the operations to meet Walmart's standards. Walmart's US marketplace sales grew more than 50% in the quarter that ended Jul 31, 2026 (Walmart, Aug 20, 2026), and the marketplace crossed 200,000 active sellers in June 2025 (Marketplace Pulse). That is the market, not a forecast. Run your numbers per unit first.

Does Walmart charge a monthly fee?

No. Walmart says there are no setup, monthly or hidden fees for any sellers. You pay a referral fee on each completed sale, set by the item's category (15% for "Everything Else"; Walmart's schedule lists each category's rate). WFS, advertising, inventory and freight are separate costs you choose and pay.

Is it hard to get approved on Walmart Marketplace?

Walmart is selective. It asks for a business tax ID (an SSN is not accepted), documents for your business name and address, a history of marketplace or ecommerce success, GS1 GTINs, a compliant catalog, US returns capability and a payment processor account. Walmart does not publish an approval rate. Sellers with no selling history are often better starting elsewhere.

How long does it take to start selling on Walmart?

Walmart says business verification takes from a few minutes to a few business days, and account setup can take up to four hours to finalize after you add inventory (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding, updated Aug 31, 2026). Application review times are not published by Walmart. Plan for weeks, not days, from application to first sale.

Can I sell the same products on Amazon and Walmart?

Yes, if you own the brand or are authorized to sell it on both. Keep one stock count so the same unit is not sold twice, map your catalog to Walmart's product types instead of copying it, and plan promotions together: a deep discount on Amazon can lower the price Walmart compares you with. Module 08 covers it.

Do I have to use WFS?

No. You can ship orders yourself or through a 3PL with US returns capability. WFS handles picking, packing, shipping, customer service and returns for WFS orders and covers most performance metrics for those orders, but it charges fulfillment, storage and long-term storage fees. Compare both per SKU.

What is the Walmart buy box?

It is the main offer on an item page, the one shown with the Add to Cart button. Walmart picks it on price, shipping speed, shipping cost, in-stock rate, content quality and post-purchase experience. Offers priced well above recent market prices lose the button and stay buyable only through other seller options.

Is this guide free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free and ungated, part of our Learning Center. There is no fee, no sign-up wall and no certificate. Walmart also runs its own Seller Academy on Marketplace Learn with certification lessons and video tutorials, which we link to where it helps.
