How to start a Shopify store in 2026
Good first stores are rarely lucky.
Their owners set up payments, taxes, shipping and product pages before the first visitor arrived, so the first orders go out on time and the numbers make sense.
Quick answer
To start a Shopify store in 2026: confirm your unit economics, choose a plan (Basic is $39 a month billed monthly), set up Shopify Payments, taxes, shipping profiles and policies, build product pages that answer buyers' questions, test a real order end to end, then launch with one traffic source you can measure weekly.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
What should you have before you open a Shopify store?
This is stage 1 of our free Shopify guide. Shopify will let you open a store with nothing but an email address. A store that lasts needs more. Before you pay for inventory or ads, have these five things written down:
- 01A real product you can get reliably.
Your own brand, a private label item or stock you have permission to sell. Know your supplier's lead time and minimum order.
- 02Landed cost per unit.
Product cost plus freight, duties and any prep. If you import, re-check duties before every order, because tariff rules can change between orders.
- 03A planned price and the margin after every fee.
Use the formula below.
- 04Packed size and weight.
Shipping is priced on these. A box that is too large can cost more than the product margin.
- 05Your business basics.
A legal entity, an EIN, a business bank account and, if you sell into states where you must collect it, a sales tax registration.
The first formula: contribution margin per order.
Contribution margin per order = price paid by the customer minus product landed cost minus payment fee minus shipping and packaging cost minus ad cost per order minus app and other costs per order.
Example (illustrative · sample figures): a $40 order, $12 landed cost, $1.46 payment fee on Basic (2.9% + 30¢), $7 shipping and packaging, $10 ad cost per order and $1 app cost per order leaves $8.54 per order before your own time, returns and overhead. If that number is negative or close to zero, fix the price, the product or the plan before you launch.
How do you set up a Shopify store, step by step?
Follow this order. Each step links to the module that teaches it in depth.
| Step | What to do | Why it matters | Module |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Start the trial ("3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months" on most plans, read Oct 20, 2026) and pick a plan | Basic suits most new stores; the higher plans lower card rates and add staff accounts | 01 |
| 2 | Turn on two-step authentication for the owner account | The owner account controls payouts; protect it first | 01 |
| 3 | Set up Shopify Payments, payout bank account and business details | Missing or incorrect details are a listed cause of payout holds (Shopify Help Center) | 03 |
| 4 | Set up taxes for the states where you must collect | Shopify helps charge the right tax; filing and remitting stay with you unless you use Shopify Tax automated filing (Shopify Help Center) | 01 |
| 5 | Build shipping profiles with real rates from your packed weights | Surprise shipping costs at checkout are a common reason for abandoned carts | 04 |
| 6 | Write your policies: shipping, returns, refunds, privacy, terms | Customers and card companies both read them when there is a dispute | 01, 03 |
| 7 | Choose a theme and build product pages | The product page has to answer what, how much, when it arrives and what if it does not fit | 02 |
| 8 | Install only the apps you need on day one | Every app adds cost and page weight; Shopify includes Flow, Inbox, Messaging and Subscriptions | 08 |
| 9 | Connect analytics and test your tracking with a real order | Since Aug 26, 2026, non-Plus stores cannot rely on old Thank you page scripts | 03, 06 |
| 10 | Place and refund a real test order | You see exactly what a customer sees, emails included | 03 |
How much does it cost to start a Shopify store in 2026?
There is no single number, because inventory and ads vary so much. Here is a way to build your own budget, with Shopify's own figures where they are fixed.
| Cost | What it is | How to estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | Basic $39 a month billed monthly ($29 billed yearly) | shopify.com/pricing, read Oct 20, 2026 |
| Payment fees | 2.9% + 30¢ per online card order on Basic with Shopify Payments | Orders a month × (average order × 2.9% + $0.30) |
| Domain | Yearly fee to your registrar or through Shopify | Check at purchase |
| Theme | Free Shopify themes exist; paid themes are a one-time fee | Optional |
| Apps | Many free tiers; paid tiers often rise with orders or contacts | List each app and its fee at your expected volume |
| Inventory | Your first order from the supplier, paid before you sell | Units × landed cost |
| Packaging and shipping | Boxes, mailers, labels | Per order, from test shipments |
| Ads and content | Paid traffic, photos, video | A weekly budget you can afford to lose while you learn |
| Returns | Return shipping and items you cannot resell | Start with an assumed rate and replace it with your own data |
Two numbers decide whether the budget works: how much cash you can tie up in stock, and how long you can pay for traffic while you learn what converts.
How do you get your first sales?
Your first sales usually come from people who already know you or your product, then from one paid or organic channel you learn well. Trying every channel at once spreads a small budget too thin.
- Week 0: tell people who already care.
Friends, past customers, an email list, a community you belong to. They give you your first reviews and honest feedback.
- Weeks 1 to 4: pick one traffic source and measure it weekly.
For most new stores that is either paid social, Google Shopping or search content. Track cost per order against your contribution margin per order.
- From the first order: ask for a review.
Reviews answer the questions a new visitor has. Shopify Flow or a reviews app can send the request a set number of days after delivery.
- Make sure AI shopping tools can read your products.
Shopify said on Mar 24, 2026 that products are discoverable in ChatGPT by default through Agentic Storefronts, and its Help Center says the feature is active by default for eligible stores. Clear titles, full descriptions, correct variants and real photos help both people and AI tools.
Keep one rule: do not increase ad spend until your contribution margin per order is positive at your current cost per order. When orders arrive every week and the margin holds, move on to the Scale guide.
Your launch-week routine
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| Every morning | Check new orders, unpaid orders and anything flagged for fraud risk; answer every message |
| Every afternoon | Ship or confirm what shipped; send a delay note to anyone whose order will be late |
| End of each day | Note what customers asked; fix the product page if the same question comes twice |
| End of week | Orders, contribution margin per order, cost per order from ads, stock left, response time |
If an order will ship later than your stated time, tell the customer and offer to cancel. The FTC's Mail, Internet or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule requires "a reasonable basis" for any shipping time you state, or a reasonable basis to believe you can ship within 30 days if you state none. If you cannot ship on time, you must seek the customer's consent to the delay, tell them they can cancel for a full, prompt refund, or cancel and refund yourself (FTC business guidance, read Oct 20, 2026).
Which mistakes cost new Shopify stores the most?
| Mistake | What it costs | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Launching without knowing margin per order | Ads scale a loss | Do the formula above for every product |
| Surprise shipping cost at checkout | Lost orders at the last step; carts are abandoned 70.22% of the time on average (Baymard Institute, page updated Sep 22, 2025) | Show shipping cost or a free-shipping threshold on the product page |
| Using another card provider on Basic without checking the 2% Shopify fee | 2% of every order on top of the provider's own rate | Compare full cost at your volume |
| Business details incomplete in Shopify Payments | Payouts paused until verified (Shopify Help Center) | Complete every requested detail before launch |
| Ten apps on day one | Monthly fees and slower pages | Start with Shopify's built-in tools |
| No delay notices | Angry messages, refunds and chargebacks | Notify before the customer asks |
| Ordering too much stock | Cash tied up for months | Order for a test period; reorder from real sales |
When should you get help, and what kind?
Some owners like doing every job themselves at the start; it is the fastest way to learn. Others have a real product and a budget, but not the hours. Both are fine. If you want help, choose by the job:
- A developer
for custom theme work or Functions.
- An ads specialist
if traffic is the only gap.
- A managed store service
if you want the daily operations run for you. Whoever you hire, insist on the basics: you keep the accounts, brand, inventory, money and decisions; fees are written down before work starts; a named lead runs the daily work; access is removed within 24 hours if you leave; and nobody promises sales, profit or rankings. It is owner-light, not owner-free: plan on 2 to 4 hours a week for approvals.
Ecom Relays offers three routes for founders with a real product and the budget for inventory, fees and ads. Shopify Launch is $999 with 30 days of support, and Store Care then runs the store from $399 a month. Neither includes choosing or sourcing products; that stays with you. If you want help with that part too, Full Relay, our managed store service, adds product research and supplier sourcing, and you approve every product, supplier, price and purchase. You can also use this guide and do it all yourself. Every route starts with the same free step: a Launch Readiness Check, a written plan within 3 business days.
Problems and fixes at this stage
| Problem (buyer's words) | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "We have a product, but we do not know where to start." | No plan for channel, costs and paperwork | Written plan: margin per unit, paperwork, channel order | Launch Readiness Check (free), then Shopify Launch ($999) | A go or no-go with margin per order on paper |
| "We launched, and orders are slow." | One unmeasured traffic source, or a product page that leaves questions | One channel, weekly cost per order; fix the top unanswered question | Store Care Plus ($699 a month) includes ad management up to $3,000 spend | Cost per order against margin per order, weekly |
| "Our inbox is full of 'where is my order?'" | No proactive shipping updates | Shipping notifications and delay notes | WISMO Breaker (Relay Modules from $750) | Order-status tickets per 100 orders |

How much money do I need to start a Shopify store?
Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly, after a trial of "3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months" on most plans (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). The larger costs are usually inventory, packaging, shipping and ads. Build your budget from the cost table above with your own product's numbers rather than a general figure.
Can I start a Shopify store with no experience?
You can open one without experience, and many owners learn on the job. Experience does help: knowing your margin, your supplier and your customer saves months. The 8 modules in this guide teach the skills in the order you need them. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do.
Which Shopify plan should a new store choose?
Most new stores start on Basic. Move up when the numbers say so: Grow lowers the online card rate from 2.9% to 2.7% and adds 5 staff accounts (Shopify pricing, read Oct 20, 2026). Module 01 shows how to work out the order volume at which a lower card rate covers the higher plan fee.
Do I need an LLC to start a Shopify store?
Shopify does not require one to open a store. Payment providers, banks and marketplaces ask for business details, and a separate legal entity keeps business and personal money apart. Ask an accountant or attorney in your state which structure fits you before you take payments.
Do I have to charge sales tax on Shopify?
If you are required to collect sales tax in a state, you must. Shopify can charge tax at checkout, but Shopify does not file or remit for you "unless you use Shopify Tax and set up automated filing" (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). Requirements depend on where you have a presence and how much you sell into each state, so confirm yours with a tax professional.
How long does it take to set up a Shopify store?
A simple store can be set up in a few days. Most of the time goes into product photos, product page copy, shipping rates and a real test order. Rushing setup to launch sooner often means fixing payments, taxes or shipping later, when customers are already waiting.
Is dropshipping a good way to start on Shopify?
It needs less cash up front, but you depend on a supplier's stock, quality and delivery time, and the customer holds you responsible. If you choose it, test the supplier with your own orders and state delivery times you can meet. See Business models for the honest risks.
Can someone set up and run my Shopify store for me?
Yes. Shopify Launch from Ecom Relays is $999 one time, with 30 days of support after go-live, and Store Care runs the store from $399 a month. Neither includes product sourcing. Full Relay, our managed store service, adds product research and sourcing, and every product, supplier and purchase still needs your approval. You keep the store, the money and every decision. We never promise sales or income.
How many products should a new Shopify store launch with?
Fewer than most owners expect. Launch with the products you can keep in stock, photograph properly and explain on a product page that answers every common question. A small range lets you learn which product sells and why, with less cash tied up. Add products once you can reorder your first ones from real sales data, not from hope.
