Module 05: Walmart Fulfillment Services for beginners, and your other options

Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), for beginners: you send inventory to Walmart's fulfillment centers, and Walmart stores it, picks, packs and ships your Walmart orders and handles customer service and returns for them. You pay a fulfillment fee per unit by weight (from $3.45 for 1 lb or less), monthly storage per cubic foot and, from Jun 30, 2026, long-term storage on units held more than 365 days. There are no setup or monthly fees and no inventory minimums.

The alternative is seller-fulfilled: you or your 3PL ship each order and keep control of packaging and stock. You also carry every delivery metric yourself. Fulfillment decides your delivery promise, a large share of your fees and which performance standards you carry, so decide it per SKU, not once for the whole store.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

Walmart Fulfillment Services for beginners: what does WFS do?

Walmart stores your inventory, ships Walmart orders and handles customer support and returns for them. Walmart says WFS "doesn't require inventory minimums or maximums" (Walmart Marketplace) and has "zero setup, monthly, or hidden fees" (Walmart Marketplace, Pricing).

What stays with you: forecasting, prep and labels to Walmart's standards, inbound shipments, deciding what to do with aged units and filing claims when units go missing. To start, WFS needs a billing method, which Walmart verifies in two to three business days (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding).

What does WFS cost in 2026?

Walmart's WFS fee page (updated May 27, 2026) lists these rates:

FeeRate
Fulfillment, standard items$3.45 at 1 lb or less; $4.95 at 2 lb; $5.45 at 3 lb; $5.75 plus $0.40 a lb over 4 lb (4 to 20 lb); higher tiers above 20 lb
Surcharges per unitApparel +$0.50; hazmat +$0.50; retail price under $10 +$1; oversize 1 +$3; oversize 2 +$20
Storage, January to September$0.75 per cubic foot a month
Storage, October to December$0.75 per cubic foot a month for units stored up to 30 days, plus $1.50 for units stored longer
Long-term storage, from Jun 30, 2026$2.25 per cubic foot a month at 366 to 450 days; $7.50 over 450 days
Return processingFrom $4.70 a unit (1 lb or less)
Unplanned prep$0.65 a unit for a missing or incorrect label; $0.80 for a missing or incorrect poly bag
Disposal and removalDisposal $0.35 a unit up to 2 lb; removal is the disposal fee plus $0.40 a lb shipping

Source: Walmart Marketplace Learn, WFS fees. Shipping weight is the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight (length × width × height in inches, divided by 139). Cubic feet = length × width × height in inches, divided by 1,728. New sellers in New-Seller Savings get 10% off WFS fulfillment fees until they reach $2K in savings, to Jan 31, 2027 (Walmart, New-Seller Savings). Our WFS fees guide tracks every change.

Worked example: WFS or ship it yourself?

Illustrative · sample figures. A product in a 10 × 6 × 3 inch box weighing 1.8 lb.

  • Dimensional weight: 180 ÷ 139 = 1.3 lb, so the unit weight of 1.8 lb counts, and the 2 lb rate applies: $4.95.
  • Cubic feet: 180 ÷ 1,728 = 0.104 cubic feet. Storage January to September: 0.104 × $0.75 = about $0.08 a unit per month.
Cost per unitWFSSeller-fulfilled
Fulfillment fee or shipping label (sample label)$4.95$6.10
Storage (three months at WFS)$0.23Your warehouse or 3PL rate
Box and packing materials (sample)Included$0.35
Pick, pack and labor (sample)Included$0.60
Total$5.18$7.05 plus storage

In this example WFS is cheaper per unit and gives a faster delivery promise. The answer flips when units sit too long: the same item held past day 365 pays $2.25 × 0.104, about $0.23 a month, and past day 450 about $0.78 a month. Our WFS storage fee calculator runs this per SKU.

What does WFS do for your metrics?

Walmart says WFS sellers get most performance metrics met for them (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Late shipment rate). The negative feedback rate standard applies to WFS sellers too (Walmart Marketplace newsletter, January 2026), because it reflects the product and listing, not only the delivery.

Walmart also reports that "Sellers using Walmart Fulfillment Services see 50% GMV growth, on average", for items with the "Fulfilled by Walmart" tag and delivery promises of two days or less, based on its own data from February 2025 to March 2026 (Walmart Marketplace). That is Walmart's own average, not a forecast for your items.

What if you ship it yourself?

You carry all eight standards, including on-time delivery (90% or above), valid tracking (99% or above) and late shipment (5% or below) (module 06). In Seller Center you set shipping in one of two ways: Shipping Templates or Simplified Shipping Settings, which "automatically calculates transit times and chooses the best fulfillment center" based on your configuration. Since Oct 7, 2026 sellers on templates can migrate more easily (Walmart release notes).

Use carriers on Walmart's approved list; on Oct 13, 2026 Walmart added eight parcel carriers to it for seller-fulfilled orders (same source). Set handling times you can meet on your busiest day, not your average one.

Many sellers run both: WFS for steady standard-size sellers and seller-fulfilled for the rest. WFS stock can also fulfill your orders from other channels through Walmart Multichannel Solutions, in unbranded packaging, from $7.45 for standard shipping of one unit at 6 oz or less, with "zero Marketplace referral fees for non-Walmart orders" (Walmart Multichannel Solutions). Module 08 covers that for Amazon sellers.

What if WFS loses units at receiving?

Open an investigation "between 10 and 50 days from the time of delivery to a Walmart fulfillment center", as shown by tracking. In Seller Center: Shipping Plans, find the shipment and choose View plan, then the Track items tab, then Investigate shipment. Add tracking and the documents Walmart asks for (none for Walmart Preferred Carrier parcels; proof of delivery for other parcel carriers; signed bills of lading for LTL or FTL) and submit (Walmart Marketplace Learn, WFS receiving claims, updated Aug 6, 2026). Put a weekly check of received versus shipped units on the calendar so the window never passes.

Common mistakes

  • Sending a year of stock to WFS.

Long-term storage starts at day 366 and rises at day 450.

  • Missing prep.

Every missing label or poly bag costs $0.65 to $0.80 a unit.

  • Forgetting dimensional weight.

A light item in a big box pays for the box.

  • Promising seller-fulfilled delivery you cannot keep

    on a busy Monday.

  • Never checking receiving.

Claims have a 10 to 50 day window.

Key takeaways

  • WFS: fulfillment from $3.45 a unit, storage $0.75 per cubic foot a month, higher in October to December.
  • Long-term storage applies from day 366 since Jun 30, 2026.
  • WFS covers most metrics for WFS orders; negative feedback still counts.
  • Decide per SKU, and recheck when sales speed changes.
  • Receiving claims: 10 to 50 days after delivery.

Do this now

  • Measure and weigh each SKU as packed; calculate cubic feet and dimensional weight.
  • Price WFS fulfillment and storage per unit for 30, 90 and 365 days.
  • Set a rule: send cover for what sells within the next few months, not the year.
  • Write label and poly bag instructions into your purchase orders.
  • For seller-fulfilled SKUs, check handling times you can meet every day.

Problem and fix

"Our WFS stock is getting old." Cause: over-ordering. Fix: a monthly aged-stock review and action before day 365. Relay Module: Stock Flow (RELAY-03), with aged-stock alerts; or our WFS management. Measure: units older than 300 days.

"WFS lost units at receiving." Fix: a weekly received-versus-shipped check and claims inside the 10 to 50 day window. Service: claims are included in monthly plans such as Store Care, with no commission. Measure: claims filed inside the window.

What is WFS on Walmart?

Walmart Fulfillment Services: Walmart stores your inventory in its fulfillment centers, ships your Walmart orders and handles customer service and returns for them. You pay per unit and for storage, with no setup or monthly fees and no inventory minimums or maximums.

Is WFS required to sell on Walmart?

No. Walmart accepts WFS or another B2C US warehouse with returns capability (Walmart Marketplace). Many sellers use WFS for some items and ship the rest themselves.

What are the WFS fees in 2026?

Fulfillment starts at $3.45 a unit for 1 lb or less and rises by weight; storage is $0.75 per cubic foot a month, with an extra $1.50 in October to December for units stored over 30 days; long-term storage from Jun 30, 2026 is $2.25 and $7.50 per cubic foot a month. Surcharges apply to apparel, hazmat, items under $10 and oversize items.

What is the WFS long-term storage fee?

From Jun 30, 2026: $2.25 per cubic foot a month for units stored 366 to 450 days, and $7.50 for units stored over 450 days (Walmart Marketplace Learn, WFS fees). Remove, promote or bundle slow stock before day 366.

Does WFS protect my seller metrics?

For WFS orders, Walmart meets most performance metrics for you. The negative feedback rate still applies, because it reflects the product and the listing. Keep product quality and descriptions accurate.

Can WFS ship my Amazon or Shopify orders?

Yes, through Walmart Multichannel Solutions, from your WFS stock in unbranded packaging. Walmart charges no referral fee on non-Walmart orders; fulfillment starts at $7.45 for standard shipping of one unit at 6 oz or less. Check each channel's own rules on fulfillment and packaging.

Is WFS cheaper than FBA?

It depends on size, weight and how long stock sits. Compare per SKU with current rates from both; our WFS vs FBA guide shows how.
