Business models on Walmart: which one fits you?
On Walmart, the model you choose decides what Walmart will let you sell, who controls your content and how much cash you tie up. Choose it on purpose.
Most Walmart sellers are brand owners, private label sellers, authorized wholesalers or Amazon brands adding Walmart. You can sell as a Marketplace seller (3P), setting your own prices, or as a Walmart supplier (1P), selling to Walmart. You can fulfill with WFS or yourself, and run it yourself or with a managed store service. Approval is selective.
Who does Walmart let sell on Marketplace?
Walmart is selective. Its supplier page describes Marketplace as an option for "select third-party retailers" (corporate.walmart.com, Apply to be a supplier, read Oct 20, 2026). Its Marketplace FAQ lists what it expects from every applicant: a business tax ID (SSNs are not accepted) or business license number, documents for your business name and address, a history of marketplace or ecommerce success, GS1 GTINs, a catalog that complies with the Prohibited Products Policy, fulfillment through WFS or a US warehouse with returns capability and a compatible payment processor (Walmart Marketplace FAQ, read Oct 20, 2026). Walmart does not publish an approval rate.
In practice that means every model below starts with the same test: a real business, real products and a record of selling them.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
The Walmart business models at a glance
| Model | What you sell | Who owns the brand | Content control on Walmart | Cash you tie up | Main risk | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brand owner | Your own branded products | You | Highest, with Brand Portal (registered USPTO trademark) | Inventory, molds, packaging | Demand and reviews start at zero | Brands with a product and a trademark |
| Private label | Products made for you under your brand | You | Same as brand owner once the trademark registers | Minimum order quantities | Copycats; trademark timing | Sellers with supplier relationships |
| Wholesale with authorization | Other brands' products, with written permission | The brand | Authorized reseller rights, below the acting brand owner | Inventory | Price competition on shared item pages | Distributors with brand letters |
| Multichannel expansion from Amazon or Shopify | Your existing catalog | You or the brand | Depends on the model above | Extra stock or shared stock | Overselling; price conflicts across channels | Running brands |
| Walmart supplier (1P) | You sell to Walmart; Walmart sells to shoppers | You | Walmart controls retail price and placement | Walmart's terms | Less control | Brands Walmart wants to stock |
| Managed store service | Any of the above, run with a team you hire; Full Relay also covers product research and sourcing | You | Unchanged: you keep everything | The provider's fee plus your inventory, fees, freight and ads | The product may not sell; choosing a provider that promises income | Owners with the budget for inventory, fees and ads who want a team on the work |
Fulfillment is a separate choice inside every model: WFS or seller-fulfilled (section below).
Brand owner and private label: what does Walmart need?
Both models build a brand Walmart can protect only if you can prove you own the brand. Walmart's Brand Portal accepts brand owners with an active, fully registered USPTO trademark (a seven-digit registration number); applications with an eight-digit serial number may be pending and are not yet eligible (Brand Portal overview, updated Oct 14, 2025). That is stricter than Amazon, where a pending application is accepted for Brand Registry.
Once registered, the acting brand owner can update item content over any other seller, file IP claims, set up a brand shop and run Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos. Practical rule: file the trademark early, because the USPTO's first action takes months (an average of 4.45 months in the first half of fiscal 2026; USPTO, May 5, 2026).
Wholesale on Walmart: what does "authorized" mean?
Wholesale on Walmart means buying another brand's products and reselling them with the brand's permission. Brand Portal lets the brand assign authorized reseller rights; authorized resellers can update content over other sellers, except the acting brand owner (Brand Portal overview). Without written authorization, IP claims from the brand can remove your offers. Keep invoices and authorization letters in a compliance file. Ecom Relays does not run reselling without brand permission or dropshipping onto marketplaces.
On shared item pages several sellers compete for one buy box, so wholesale margins depend on price, shipping speed and stock. Run the contribution per unit at the buy box price, not your list price.
Adding Walmart to an Amazon or Shopify business
This is the most common path for running brands. What carries over: your products, barcodes, supplier relationships and selling record (which helps the application). What does not: your listings (Walmart has its own product types and attributes), your Amazon reviews and your Brand Registry status (Walmart needs a registered trademark). Two operating risks: stock shared across channels and promotions on one channel that pull down the price Walmart compares you with. Walmart's Express setup can import business details and listings from another marketplace through Versori (Complete onboarding, updated Aug 31, 2026). Module 08 walks through it.
Walmart 1P vs 3P: Marketplace seller or supplier?
The difference is who sells to the shopper and who sets the price.
| Marketplace seller (3P) | Walmart supplier (1P) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells to the shopper | You | Walmart |
| Who sets the retail price | You, inside Walmart's pricing rules | Walmart |
| How you get paid | Sale price minus referral fee, paid out after the sale | Walmart pays your invoice on its terms |
| How you apply | Marketplace application in Seller Center | Retail Link self-registration and Walmart's supplier qualification |
| Where products can appear | Walmart.com and the app | Walmart.com, and stores if Walmart chooses |
| Control over content and stock | High | Lower |
| Selectivity | Selective | Walmart says self-registering "does not guarantee you will be extended an agreement" |

WFS or seller-fulfilled?
| WFS | Seller-fulfilled | |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Fulfillment from $3.45 a unit; storage $0.75 per cubic foot a month; Oct to Dec surcharge; long-term storage from day 366 | Your shipping and 3PL costs; Ship with Walmart discounted labels |
| Metrics | Walmart handles most for WFS orders, except negative feedback rate | All eight are yours |
| Speed | Walmart delivery promises; Inventory Transfer Services | Depends on your carrier and 3PL |
| Other channels | Multichannel Solutions can fulfill your other channels from WFS stock | Your 3PL serves every channel |
| Fits | Steady sellers, standard sizes | Slow movers, oversize, custom or bundled orders |
Sources: WFS fees (updated May 27, 2026); Seller performance standards (updated Jul 28, 2026); Ship with Walmart labels (updated Aug 13, 2026). Many brands use both, decided per SKU; module 05 has a worked cost comparison.
What is a managed Walmart store, and what does a good one look like?
A managed store is a business you own that a team runs with you. It is a fair goal for owners who want a Walmart store without doing every task themselves, as long as the terms are right. We offer two versions: Store Care runs the daily work of a live store for a fixed monthly fee from $399, and Full Relay on Walmart, our managed store service, starts earlier, with product research, sourcing, the seller application, item setup and the first WFS shipment, then daily running.
What a good managed store looks like:
- You own everything.
The Walmart account is in your business name, you hold the Admin role and you keep the brand, the inventory, the supplier relationships, the customer data and the money.
- You approve every product, supplier, price and purchase
, and you pay suppliers, freight, platform fees and ad spend directly.
- Every fee is in writing before work starts.
Store Care is a fixed, published fee. Full Relay is paid either as a fixed monthly retainer or as a one-time fee plus a commission on the store's results at a rate set in the written agreement; when the store does not sell, you owe no commission.
- Owner-light, not owner-free.
Plan on 2 to 4 hours a week to approve prices, purchase orders and new content.
- Clean exit.
If you leave, access is removed within 24 hours and you keep every listing, SOP and report.
- Nobody promises sales, profit or rankings.
Not us, not anyone honest. We do not sell stores and we never promise income.
It suits founders with the budget for inventory, fees and ads. If you only want help with the launch, Walmart Launch is $1,499 (application support, up to 25 items, WFS onboarding and the first shipment, 30 days of support); it does not include product research or sourcing. Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you and are not refundable by us if a product does not sell.
Red flags from any provider: a ready-made store sold to you, promises of income or a date when the store pays for itself, an account in their name or a request for your password. Before you hire anyone, read how to choose a managed store service.
How do you choose?
Answer five questions in order:
- Do you own the brand, or have written permission to sell it? If neither, Walmart is not the place to start.
- Do you have a selling record? If not, build one on another channel first.
- Does the contribution per unit work at Walmart's market price, after the referral fee and fulfillment?
- Can you meet the standards with your own shipping, or do you need WFS?
- Who will do the daily work: you, staff or a managed team?
Problems and fixes on this page
| Problem in your words | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "We launched without a trademark, and now we cannot protect our listings." | No registered USPTO trademark for Brand Portal | File now; use authorized reseller rights in the meantime where the brand allows | Launch Readiness Check (paperwork check) | Trademark status; content changes by others |
| "We want to add a channel without breaking what already works." | No shared stock count or catalog map | Channel Launch with one stock count | Channel Launch ($1,499 for Walmart) | Cancellations; price conflicts |
| "We have a product, but we do not know which channel to start on." | No per-unit math | Contribution per unit on each channel | Launch Readiness Check (free) | Written go or no-go |

What is the difference between Walmart 1P and 3P?
As a 3P Marketplace seller you sell directly to shoppers on Walmart.com, set your own price inside Walmart's pricing rules and pay a referral fee. As a 1P supplier you sell to Walmart, which sets the retail price and may stock stores. They are separate applications.
Can I do private label on Walmart?
Yes. Private label works like any brand you own. To control content and run brand ads you need Brand Portal, which needs an active, fully registered USPTO trademark. A pending application is not eligible, so file early.
Can I sell wholesale products on Walmart?
Yes, with the brand's permission. The brand can assign authorized reseller rights through Brand Portal. Without authorization, IP claims can remove your offers. Keep invoices and authorization letters on file.
Can I dropship on Walmart?
We do not run dropshipping onto marketplaces. Walmart's Shipping and fulfillment policy (updated Jul 2, 2026) says you may not purchase products from another retailer and have that retailer ship the order directly to the customer, and you may not ship a package that includes the name or other identifier of any entity other than the manufacturer or seller. Walmart also asks for fulfillment through WFS or a US warehouse with returns capability. Read the full policy in Marketplace Learn before you plan any supplier-direct shipping.
Is a managed Walmart store legitimate?
It can be, when the terms are right: the account is in your name, you hold Admin, you approve every product and purchase, every fee is in writing before work starts and nobody promises sales or income. A ready-made store sold to you, an income promise or an account held in the provider's name are red flags.
Should an Amazon seller sell on Walmart?
Often, if the products are yours or authorized, the contribution per unit works at Walmart's prices and you can keep one stock count across both. Your Amazon record helps the application; your Amazon listings, reviews and Brand Registry do not carry over.
Do I need WFS to be approved?
No. Walmart needs fulfillment through WFS or a US warehouse with returns capability. Many sellers start seller-fulfilled and move fast sellers into WFS once demand is clear.
