Module 07: Walmart Connect for beginners, the advertising basics
Walmart Connect for beginners starts with one rule: Sponsored Products only run on items that are "in stock," winning the Buy Box and published on Walmart.com (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Sponsored search, updated Oct 1, 2026). Ads amplify what already works, so fix price, stock and content first, then spend.
Walmart Connect is Walmart's advertising business. Most sellers start with Sponsored Products, cost-per-click ads chosen on relevance and bid. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos need a USPTO-registered trademark and Brand Portal. Start small on buy box winners, judge every ad dollar against contribution per unit and keep what pays.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
Walmart Connect for beginners: which ad types can sellers use?
Walmart describes its sponsored search ads and a wider set of advertising solutions. Most sellers start with one: Sponsored Products.
| Ad type | What it does | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored Products | Product ads where shoppers search and browse: search, browse, item and home pages | Items that are in stock, winning the buy box and published |
| Sponsored Brands | Your brand logo and products at the top of relevant search results | Brand owners based in the US, China, Hong Kong, UK or India, with a USPTO-registered trademark, onboarded to Brand Portal |
| Sponsored Videos | Video creative in search results | Same as Sponsored Brands |
| Onsite Display | Personalized display ads on Walmart.com and the app at each stage of shopping | See Walmart Connect's guidelines |
| Brand Shop and Shelf | A free virtual storefront | Eligible brand owners |
| Search engine marketing | Your products promoted through Google Shopping Ads | See Walmart's SEM guidelines |
| Sales Rewards and Attribution | Tracking links for your marketing outside Walmart, with a commission on resulting sales | See Walmart's guidelines |
Sources: Sponsored search (updated Oct 1, 2026) and Walmart Connect advertising solutions overview (updated Jan 3, 2025). All three sponsored search formats are cost per click: you pay only when a customer clicks. For Sponsored Products, "the most relevant product with the highest bid wins the placement."
Why do Walmart ads need the buy box?
Because Sponsored Products only serve on items that win it. If an item loses the buy box to price, stock or delivery speed, its ads stop. That sets the order of work:
- 01Content
that converts (module 03).
- 02Price
inside Walmart's rules, with a floor (module 04).
- 03Delivery
that wins on speed, often through WFS (module 05).
- 04Then ads,
on the items that pass all three.
An ad on an item that cannot win the buy box spends nothing, but it also teaches you nothing. An ad on an item with weak content spends and does not convert.
How do you know if an ad pays?
Compare what an ad-driven sale costs with what the item contributes before ads. Two numbers:
- Break-even ACoS
= contribution per unit before ads ÷ price × 100.
- Ad cost per ad-attributed unit
= ad spend ÷ units the ads sold.
Worked example. Illustrative · sample figures. The $24.99 item from module 04 contributes $10.29 a unit before ads, so break-even ACoS is $10.29 ÷ $24.99 = 41.2%. In one week:
| Line | Value |
|---|---|
| Ad spend | $140.00 |
| Ad-attributed units | 18 |
| Ad sales (18 × $24.99) | $449.82 |
| ACoS ($140 ÷ $449.82) | 31.1% |
| ROAS ($449.82 ÷ $140) | 3.2 |
| Ad cost per ad-attributed unit | $7.78 |
| All units sold that week | 60 |
| Ad spend per unit sold, all units | $2.33 |
ACoS of 31.1% is under the 41.2% break-even, so each ad sale still contributes about $2.51 ($10.29 − $7.78). That is a keep. If ACoS rose above 41.2%, each ad sale would lose money, and the item would need a better price, a better listing or a lower bid.
How do you set a safe first budget?
- 01Pick 5 to 10 items
that win the buy box, have strong content and enough stock to last the test.
- 02Set a daily budget you can afford to lose
while you learn. There is no right number; there is a number you can afford.
- 03Run for a fixed period,
long enough to collect real clicks, before judging.
- 04Each week, compare ACoS with break-even
for each item.
- 05Keep what pays, pause what does not,
and move budget to the winners.
Walmart Connect in the U.S. grew 43%, excluding VIZIO, in the quarter that ended Jul 31, 2026 (Walmart, Aug 20, 2026). Expect more advertisers bidding on the same searches, which is one more reason to judge by your own break-even, not by habit.
Are there credits for new advertisers?
Yes, through New-Seller Savings, until Jan 31, 2027. New sellers who have not advertised with Walmart Connect before can get up to $500 in ad credits if they have a Walmart Connect Ad Center account in good standing, at least one admin user on it, at least one item with a Content Quality score of 80 or higher and at least one item with fast shipping (three days or less) or using WFS. There is also a 50% rebate, up to $1K, in search engine marketing credits after eligible ad spend (Walmart Marketplace Learn, New-Seller Savings). Walmart decides eligibility.
How to get started, step by step
- 01Check eligibility
for each item: published, in stock, winning the buy box.
- 02Set up Walmart Connect
from the Advertising area of Seller Center and confirm your Ad Center account has an admin user.
- 03Fix content on your test items
to a Content Quality score of 80 or more, which also qualifies you for the new-advertiser credit.
- 04Write each item's break-even ACoS
on your sheet before the first click.
- 05Launch a small Sponsored Products test
on 5 to 10 items with a daily budget you can afford.
- 06Review weekly
against break-even, and keep a log of each change.
- 07Brand owners:
once your USPTO registration is in Brand Portal, add Sponsored Brands for your best sellers.
Common mistakes
-
Advertising items that lose the buy box.
Fix the reason first.
-
Judging ads by sales.
Sales up and margin down is the trap.
-
Spreading a small budget across the whole catalog.
Nothing gets enough clicks to judge.
-
Running ads while stock runs out.
Ads stop and rank built by ads fades.
-
Expecting Sponsored Brands without a registered trademark.
A pending application is not enough for Brand Portal.

Problem and fix
"Our agency runs ads, but nobody runs operations." Cause: ads running without buy box, stock or content work. Fix: operations first, then ads on rules. Service: Store Care Plus ($699 a month, ad management up to $3,000 of monthly spend included) or flat Walmart Connect management at $299 a month up to $5,000 of spend and $599 up to $20,000. Measure: ACoS against break-even per item.

What is Walmart Connect?
Walmart's advertising business. For Marketplace sellers it covers Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos in search, plus Onsite Display, Brand Shop and Shelf, search engine marketing through Google Shopping Ads and Sales Rewards and Attribution (Walmart Marketplace Learn, advertising solutions).
Why are my Walmart ads not showing?
Usually because the item lost the buy box, went out of stock or is unpublished. Sponsored Products only run on items that are in stock, winning the buy box and published. Check the item's buy box eligibility in your item report or Pricing Insights, then bids.
Do I need a trademark to advertise on Walmart?
Not for Sponsored Products. Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos need a USPTO-registered trademark, onboarding to Brand Portal and a brand owner based in an eligible country (the US, China, Hong Kong, UK or India).
How much should a new Walmart seller spend on ads?
The Walmart pages we read set no minimum for sellers. Spend only what you can afford while you learn, and only on buy box winners. Judge it weekly against each item's break-even ACoS. Use the new-advertiser credits if you qualify.
How are Walmart ads charged?
Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos are sold on a cost-per-click basis: you pay only when a customer clicks. Placement depends on relevance and bid.
What ACoS should I aim for on Walmart?
Below your break-even ACoS, which comes from your own margin: contribution per unit before ads divided by price. Two sellers in the same category can have very different targets. Our worked example breaks even at 41.2%; a thinner-margin item might break even at 15%.
Should ad management be a percent of spend?
We do not think so: a percent rewards spending more. Our ad management is a flat $299 a month up to $5,000 in spend and $599 up to $20,000, never a percent of spend.
