Module 03: Item setup and the Walmart Listing Quality score

The Walmart Listing Quality score rates each item on five components: content quality, price competitiveness, shipping (your promised delivery speed), published and in-stock status over the last seven days, and ratings and reviews. Your catalog score is "an average of your item-level scores" (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Listing Quality, updated Apr 9, 2026).

Set an item up the way Walmart scores it and you skip months of fixes: a GS1 GTIN, the most specific product type, every true attribute, a plain item name and key features, compliant claims and the right images. This lesson covers the score, the setup order, who controls content and what to fix first.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

How does the Walmart Listing Quality score work?

Five components, each scored per item (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Listing Quality):

ComponentWhat Walmart measuresWhat you control
Content qualityThe item name, description, key features and imagesWriting, attributes and images
Price competitiveness"Your price against similar products on external marketplaces"Your price and your promotions elsewhere
Shipping"Your promised delivery speed across ZIP codes"WFS or your shipping settings
Published and in stockHow often the item was available over the last seven daysStock and listing errors
Ratings and reviewsNumber of reviews and average ratingProduct quality and post-purchase experience

Items that weigh more than 50 pounds or are listed at $10 or less are not included in the Listing Quality calculation, and any component shown as N/A is left out of the score. Walmart does not publish weights for the five components. You find the dashboard in Seller Center under Growth, then Listing Quality, and since Sep 14, 2026 it gives personalized recommendations to improve listings at scale (Walmart release notes).

What is a good Listing Quality score?

Walmart publishes no single target for the overall score, but two programs set component bars you can aim at. Pro Seller asks for a content quality score and a price competitiveness score of at least 75% each (Walmart, Pro Seller). New-Seller Savings Walmart Connect credits need at least one item with a Content Quality score of 80 or higher (Walmart, New-Seller Savings).

Worked example. Illustrative · sample figures. Five items score 90, 85, 70, 55 and 80, so the catalog score is 380 ÷ 5 = 76. Fixing only the two weakest items to 80 each lifts it to 415 ÷ 5 = 83. The lowest scores move the average most, but fix by sales first: an item that sells every day is worth more attention than one that never has.

How do you set up an item right the first time?

In Seller Center, items are created from the Catalog menu, one at a time or in bulk with Walmart's templates. Work in this order:

  1. 01Product ID.

Your GS1 GTIN. No product ID, for example private label or handmade? An Admin can request a GTIN exemption under Catalog, then GTIN Exemptions (Walmart Marketplace Learn, GTIN exemption).

  2. 02Product type.

Pick the most specific one, because the attributes follow from it. Automotive sellers: Walmart added new Automotive product types and attributes on Oct 19, 2026 and plans to retire select legacy types in early 2027 (Walmart release notes).

  3. 03Attributes.

Every required one, then every optional one that is true for the product: size, count, material, color, compatibility, age range.

  4. 04Item name.

Plain and factual: brand, what it is, the deciding spec (size, count or material). No claims you cannot support.

  5. 05Key features and description.

Answer the questions buyers ask: what it does, what it is made of, what fits, what is in the box, how to care for it.

  6. 06Images.

A clear primary image of the product itself, then images that show scale, detail and use. Walmart lists a missing primary image as one reason an item is unpublished; the reason for any item shows on the Unpublished items dashboard under Catalog (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Why is my item unpublished).

  7. 07Claims.

"Made in the USA" must be consistent "across images, product packaging and item attributes"; biodegradable and compostable claims are not allowed where laws apply, and products containing PFAS and similar chemicals are restricted (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Product claims, updated Jun 5, 2026).

  8. 08External price match.

If Walmart could compare your item with the wrong product elsewhere, submit an external price match correction so the price check uses the right comparison (module 04).

  9. 09Variants.

Group sizes and colors under one variant group so shoppers see one page with choices, not scattered items.

After you add inventory, account setup can take up to four hours to finalize (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding). Check the item's status the next day rather than resubmitting.

Before and after: one item name

Illustrative · sample figures.

Item name
BeforeBEST Dog Shampoo!!! Natural Organic Oatmeal Itch Relief Puppy Dog Wash Shampoo Conditioner
AfterBrandName Oatmeal Dog Shampoo, Soap-Free, 16 fl oz

The "after" says what it is, who makes it and the size. "Organic" and "itch relief" moved out because they are claims that need proof; if you have it, say so in key features with the specifics. Hype words and repeated nouns help neither shoppers nor search.

Who controls the content on a shared item?

If several sellers offer the same item, Walmart may take content from more than one, and content priority goes to the brand. Acting brand owners registered in Brand Portal "can update item content over any other seller" and authorized resellers come next. Walmart warns you "may not always be able to define which content will be displayed" (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Brand Portal overview). Brand Portal needs a trademark fully registered with the USPTO; a pending application is generally not eligible.

Since October 2026, eligible brand owners can add Brand Highlights, combining images, video and text on product pages, applied to up to 500 items at a time (Walmart release notes).

What about AI shoppers like Sparky?

Walmart introduced Sparky, its AI shopping assistant, in June 2025 (Walmart, Jun 6, 2025). We have found no Walmart document explaining how Sparky chooses products, so the practical rule is the same as for search: complete attributes and clear, factual key features. An assistant cannot recommend what your listing does not say.

How to raise your Listing Quality score, step by step

  1. 01Open Growth, then Listing Quality,

    and sort items by sales.

  2. 02Take your top 20 items first.

Note the weakest component for each.

  3. 03Content:

fill every missing attribute, rewrite unclear item names, add images that answer questions.

  4. 04Price:

check the item against the same product on other sites; fix promotions that make your Walmart price look high.

  5. 05Shipping:

move steady sellers to WFS or tighten shipping settings you can meet (module 05).

  6. 06In stock:

set reorder points so top items never show out of stock.

  7. 07Reviews:

fix the product or packaging problems behind low ratings before chasing more reviews.

  8. 08Recheck weekly

    and log what you changed.

Common mistakes

  • Copying Amazon listings field by field.

Walmart's product types and attributes differ; map them.

  • Claims you cannot prove

in item names or key features.

  • Ignoring stock.

Seven days out of stock pulls the score down, whatever the content.

  • Fixing everything at once

instead of the items that sell.

  • No Brand Portal,

so another seller's content can win on your own brand.

Key takeaways

  • Five components, scored per item and averaged across your catalog.
  • Items over 50 lb or listed at $10 or less are left out.
  • Attributes and plain item names first; claims must match everywhere.
  • Brand Portal decides who controls content, and needs a registered trademark.
  • Fix your top 20 items by sales before the rest.

Do this now

  • Open the Listing Quality dashboard and sort by sales.
  • For your top 20 items, fill every missing attribute.
  • Rewrite any item name that hides what the product is.
  • Audit origin and environmental claims.
  • Submit external price match corrections where Walmart compared the wrong product.

Problem and fix

"Our listings get suppressed, changed or hijacked." Cause: catalog drift and no brand control. Fix: Brand Portal for registered brands and a daily catalog check. Relay Module: Catalog Ready (RELAY-09, $750), clean product data and feeds that meet Walmart's item rules; or our Walmart listing optimization. Measure: unpublished count; content changes by others.

What is a good Walmart Listing Quality score?

Walmart publishes no overall target. Use the program bars as a guide: Pro Seller asks for content quality and price competitiveness scores of at least 75% each, and New-Seller Savings ad credits need at least one item with a Content Quality score of 80 or more. Then work item by item, starting with your best sellers.

What is the Walmart content quality score?

One of the five Listing Quality components. Walmart says it measures the item name, description, key features and images (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Listing Quality). Complete attributes, a plain item name, answers in key features and images that show the product clearly all help.

How long do Walmart item updates take?

Walmart says account setup can take up to four hours to finalize after you add inventory, and item changes go through Walmart's processing before they show. Check the item status the next day before resubmitting, so you do not create duplicate updates.

Why is my content being overwritten?

Another seller, or the brand, may have higher content priority. Acting brand owners in Brand Portal can update content over any other seller, and authorized resellers come next. If it is your brand, register in Brand Portal with your USPTO registration.

Can I copy my Amazon listing to Walmart?

Use it as a starting point, not a copy. Walmart has its own product types and attributes, and its content score rewards completeness in Walmart's fields. Express setup can import listings through Versori; map and complete them afterwards.

Does stock affect the listing score?

Yes. Published and in-stock status over the last seven days is one of the five components. An item that runs out loses score and sales at the same time, so reorder points matter as much as content.

What is a GTIN exemption?

Walmart's route for items without a product identifier, such as private label or handmade goods. An Admin requests it in Seller Center under Catalog, then GTIN Exemptions, by choosing categories, product types and brand. If Walmart asks for more, the Admin must respond within five days (Walmart Marketplace Learn, GTIN exemption).
