Walmart item unpublished: why it happens and how to republish
Updated Oct 20, 2026 · Walmart sources checked Oct 20, 2026
Quick answer
Walmart unpublishes an item when it fails a listing rule: a price Walmart sees as too high against its reference price, a missing primary image, a start or end date problem, no price or a policy violation. Find the reason in Seller Center under Catalog, then Unpublished items. Fix that cause. Walmart says price fixes typically republish within 48 hours.

Key takeaways
- Every unpublished item has a reason. Seller Center shows it under Listing issues on the Unpublished items dashboard.
- The most common reason is price. Walmart compares your item price plus shipping with a reference price built from external signals such as competitor prices and your own sales history, and it publishes no fixed percentage.
- Price, image and date problems are fixed by you, and Walmart republishes automatically. Policy cases and wrong matches go through Seller Support or an external price match.
- If everything unpublished at once, look at the account, not the items: suppression, suspension or a change to your account details.
- A 15-minute daily check of the Unpublished items dashboard catches most problems before they cost a week of sales.
What does "unpublished" mean on Walmart?
An unpublished item is still in your catalog, but customers cannot see it or buy it on Walmart.com. Walmart decides when an item is unpublished. You decide most of what happens next.
Unpublished is one of several statuses that look alike from the outside. Knowing which one you have saves time.
| Status | What it means | Can customers buy it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processing | Walmart is still reviewing a new or updated item. Sellbrite quotes Walmart's review as taking up to 31 hours | Not yet | Wait, then check for errors |
| Published | Live on Walmart.com | Yes | Nothing |
| Unpublished | Removed from sale for a listing reason | No | Find the reason and fix it (this guide) |
| Published, buy box ineligible | Live, but Walmart has removed the Add to Cart button and price because the offer is priced well above the market | Only through other seller options | Lower the price; eligibility can return within four hours |
| Out of stock | Live, but zero quantity | No | Restock or fix your inventory feed; zero quantity alone does not retire an item |
| Retired | You (or your software) ended the listing | No | Not easily reversed; the SKU and product ID cannot be reused |
| Suppressed or suspended account | An account-level action, not an item problem | Depends on the action | See "Why did Walmart unpublish all my items at once?" below |

How to find out why your Walmart item is unpublished
Walmart shows the reason. You only have to look in the right place.
- 01In Seller Center on desktop:
go to Catalog, then the Unpublished items dashboard. Under Listing issues, select View items to see why each item was unpublished (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Why is my item unpublished, updated Aug 1, 2025).
- 02In the Walmart Seller app:
open Catalog on the home screen, then select Unpublished.
- 03For many items at once:
download an item report from Seller Center. Its status change reason shows why each item changed status, and its buy box eligible column shows "No" for items that lost the buy box on price.
- 04For developers and software:
the Unpublished Item Counts API gives counts by reason, and the Unpublished Items API lists the items for a given reason code (Walmart developer docs, updated Jul 30, 2026).
- 05For price reasons:
the Unpublished items dashboard also shows Walmart's reference price for each item. Write it down before you change anything.
Note for each item: item ID, SKU, reason, your current item price, your shipping charge, the reference price and the date. You will need these if you contact Seller Support.
Every unpublished reason and its fix
Each reason has its own fix and its own owner. Here they are in one table.
| Reason in Seller Center | API reason code | What it means | How to fix it | Typical time to republish | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasonable price not satisfied | REASONABLE_PRICE_NOT_SATISFIED | Walmart's view is that customers "would save drastically" buying this item on a competing website, or that your price is "egregiously higher" than prices currently or recently offered | Compare item price plus shipping with the reference price; lower the price or the shipping charge; if Walmart matched the wrong product, submit an external price match | Automatic, typically within 48 hours of a compliant price | You, then Walmart |
| Pricing error | Shown as a reason code in item reports | Walmart unpublished an offer it considered priced too low, to prevent losses and cancellations | Raise the price to a reasonable level; if the low price was intentional, send documentation through the Help button in Seller Center | Typically within 48 hours after the change; documented cases are reviewed at Walmart's discretion | You, then Seller Support |
| No primary image | PRIMARY_IMAGE_MISSING | The item has no primary image | Re-submit the item with a valid primary image | After the item is re-processed | You |
| Start date issue | START_DATE | The item's start date is in the future | Nothing if the date is right: the item publishes when the date arrives. Otherwise re-submit with the correct date | On the start date | You |
| End date issue | END_DATE | The end date you set has passed | Re-submit with a new start and end date, or with no end date | After the item is re-processed | You |
| No price | NO_PRICE | No price was found for the listing | Add a price through Seller Center, a price feed or your software | After the price is accepted | You |
| Egregious shipping cost | Not listed in Walmart's US docs | Your shipping fee is extremely high for the item | Lower the fee in your shipping template. Each template allows 10 shipping cost edits a day; more locks it for 24 hours | Up to 48 hours | You |
| Trust and safety or policy violation | Not listed in Walmart's US docs | The item breaks a Walmart policy, such as the Prohibited Products Policy | Read the policy cited, change or remove the item, then contact Seller Support if you believe it is wrong | Case by case | You, then Seller Support |
| System error during publishing | Not listed in Walmart's US docs | An internal error stopped the item from publishing | Re-submit the item | After the item is re-processed | You |

The system error row and the share of cases these reasons cover come from Walmart's Canada guide to status change reasons (updated Nov 4, 2024), which says five reasons cover about 95% of status changes; the US guides do not publish a share.

Walmart's pricing rules, explained
Price is the reason sellers ask about most, and it is the one Walmart explains least. Here is what Walmart does publish.
The rule.
Walmart automatically unpublishes offers priced "egregiously higher than prices currently or recently offered." It compares with Walmart.com, competing websites and prices that could look like price gouging or other unfair practices. It reviews the shipping fee as well as the item price. Affected items show "Reasonable Price Not Satisfied" in item reports (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025).
The reference price.
For unpublished items, Walmart shows a reference price on the Unpublished items dashboard. Walmart builds it from multiple external signals, such as competitor match price, historical selling price, buy box winner price, average offer price and Walmart's own ecommerce and store prices. Walmart does not publish a formula, a weighting or a percentage threshold (same source).
The middle zone.
Offers priced well above recent or competitor prices, but not high enough to unpublish, stay live without the Add to Cart button, price or shipping details. Buyers can still find them under other seller options. Once you change the price, buy box eligibility can take up to four hours to return (same source).
Too low is a problem too.
Some offers priced far below the market are unpublished as a pricing error, to protect you and customers from losses and cancellations (same source).
Shipping counts.
You can build shipping into the item price, but the total still has to pass the rule. Walmart suggests adjusting shipping in the template rather than in the item price (same source).
Wrong comparison product.
If Walmart compared your item with the wrong product, submit an external price match: the URL of a comparable item on another site, from the Pricing Insights or Listing Quality dashboard. Walmart recommends submitting one when you first set up an item (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Submit an external price match, updated Feb 23, 2026).
Repricer.
Walmart's Repricer can keep prices inside your range automatically. Every item needs a minimum and a maximum price before it can join a strategy, and price changes can take up to four hours after you assign one (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Repricer overview, updated May 26, 2026).

What is a "reasonable price" on Walmart?
Walmart does not publish a number. A reasonable price is one that is not far above the reference price Walmart shows you, once shipping is included. In practice there are only four choices when an item is unpublished for price:
- 01Match the reference price
if your margin still works at that price.
- 02Lower the shipping charge
if the item price is fine and shipping pushes the total over.
- 03Submit an external price match
if Walmart compared you with a different product.
- 04Leave the item unpublished
if the reference price is below your floor. Selling at a loss to stay live is a choice, not a fix.
Before you choose, check your floor. A floor is the lowest price at which the item still covers its costs on Walmart.
| Line | Example item | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Reference price shown by Walmart | $24.99 | Unpublished items dashboard |
| Walmart referral fee at 15% | $3.75 | Walmart's referral fee schedule (15% for the Everything Else category; each category has its own rate; Mar 9, 2026) |
| WFS fulfillment fee, standard item up to 1 lb | $3.45 | Walmart WFS fees, updated May 27, 2026 |
| Landed cost per unit | $8.00 | Your purchase and freight costs |
| Ad cost per unit | $2.00 | Your Walmart Connect spend divided by units |
| What is left per unit at the reference price | $7.79 | Before storage, customer return costs and overheads |
Illustrative · sample figures. The fee rates are Walmart's; the item, landed cost and ad cost are examples, not a forecast for any product. Items with a retail price under $10 carry an extra $1 WFS fee.
If what is left is too thin, the item may simply not fit Walmart at today's market price. That is a decision for you, with the numbers in front of you. Our Amazon, Walmart and Shopify fee calculator runs the same math for any item.
How to republish a Walmart item, step by step
Seven steps, in order. Most items need only the first four.
- 01Find the reason
on the Unpublished items dashboard or in the item report.
- 02Record the facts:
item ID, SKU, reason, current price, shipping charge, reference price, date.
- 03Fix the cause
from the table above: price, shipping template, primary image, start or end date, price feed or policy issue.
- 04Wait for Walmart.
Price and shipping fixes typically republish automatically within 48 hours. Buy box eligibility can return within four hours.
- 05Check again after 48 hours.
If the item is still unpublished, contact Seller Support through the Help button in Seller Center.
- 06Give Support what it asks for.
For an item you believe was unpublished in error, Walmart asks for the item ID, the current price, the feed ID for that price, the status change reason from the item report and, where relevant, a screenshot of the buy box (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules).
- 07Log it.
Keep a running list of every unpublished item, reason, fix and date. Patterns show up fast: the same SKUs, the same days, the same channel promotion.
Why did Walmart unpublish all my items at once?
If most or all of your catalog disappeared at the same time, the cause is usually the account, not the items.
| What happened | What it looks like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Account suppression | Seller-fulfilled listings become non-transactable and may show out of stock; WFS listings stay on Walmart.com | Check Seller Center notifications and email; fix the performance issue named |
| Account pause | WFS listings also become non-transactable | Same as above, faster |
| Account suspension | Seller-fulfilled and WFS listings become non-transactable and cannot be found; Seller Center access is restricted and payments are held | Read the notice; prepare an appeal that fixes the cause |
| Missed performance standards | Warnings first; failing to act may lead to suppression, suspension or termination | Bring the metric back inside the standard; see our performance standards guide |
| A change to your account details | Seller forums report mass delisting after changes such as a business address update | Confirm the change with Seller Support and check verification status |
| A feed or software error | A price or inventory feed sent zeros or wrong prices to every item | Pause the feed, correct the data, re-send |

Walmart's eight performance standards in brief: cancellations 2% or below, on-time delivery 90% or above, valid tracking 99% or above, responses within 48 hours for 95% or more of messages, negative feedback 2% or below, return rate 6% or below (9% for resold items), item not received 2% or below and late shipments 5% or below. The full detail is in our Walmart seller performance standards guide, and the daily routine is on Walmart account health management.
How to stop items getting unpublished: a prevention routine
Most unpublished items are found days late. This routine finds them the same day.
| When | Check | Time it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Every business day | Unpublished items dashboard: new items, reasons, reference prices | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Every business day | Buy box eligible column for your top 20 items | 5 minutes |
| Before any promotion on another channel | Will the promotional price on Amazon or your own store pull the Walmart reference price below your Walmart price? | 10 minutes per promotion |
| Every week | Repricer: every item has a minimum and a maximum; no item sits at its minimum for a week without a review | 20 minutes |
| Every week | Shipping templates: no outliers; no more than 10 edits a day on any template | 10 minutes |
| Every week | Listing Quality dashboard: price competitiveness and content scores on top items | 15 minutes |
| When you add items | External price match submitted at setup; primary image, start date and price present | 5 minutes per item |
| Every month | Unpublished log reviewed: repeat SKUs, repeat reasons, causes fixed at the source | 30 minutes |

Content and listing quality fixes are covered in depth on Walmart listing optimization. WFS fees that shape your floor are in our 2026 guide to WFS fees.
When to get help
Most fixes on this page take minutes once you know the reason. The hard part is checking every day, across every item, while running the rest of the business. That is the work Store Care and Ops Desk do: Walmart account health and the Unpublished items dashboard checked every business day, warnings acted on the same business day and every fix logged in your weekly report. Store Care starts at $399 a month and Ops Desk at $1,499 a month. A one-time catalog clean-up runs as the Catalog Ready module from $750. See every Walmart service on Walmart marketplace management.

Want someone to watch your Walmart catalog every day?
Our free Profit Leak Scan includes your unpublished and at-risk items, the margin on each at Walmart's reference price and a fix list ranked by dollar impact. Report within 48 hours of working access (Read Only). No sales call required.
How long does it take for a Walmart item to republish?
For price and shipping fixes, Walmart says items typically republish automatically within 48 hours. Image and date fixes republish once the item is processed again. If an item is still unpublished after 48 hours, contact Seller Support through the Help button in Seller Center with the item ID, price, feed ID and status change reason.
Does Walmart tell me the reference price?
Yes, for unpublished items. The Unpublished items dashboard shows a reference price. Walmart builds it from signals such as competitor match price, historical selling price, buy box winner price, average offer price and Walmart's own ecommerce and store prices. It does not publish the formula or a percentage threshold.
Can I appeal "Reasonable Price Not Satisfied"?
There is no formal appeal for a correct price check: you change the price and Walmart republishes. If you believe Walmart compared you with the wrong product, submit an external price match from the Pricing Insights or Listing Quality dashboard. If you believe the item was unpublished in error, contact Seller Support with the details Walmart asks for.
Does an out-of-stock item get unpublished?
Zero quantity makes an item unavailable to buy, but it is not the same as unpublished, and it does not retire the item. Restock, or fix the inventory feed if stock exists. Time out of stock also counts against the published and in stock part of your listing quality score, which looks at the last seven days.
Is unpublished the same as retired?
No. Unpublished items stay in your catalog and come back once the cause is fixed. Retired items have been ended by you or your software. Retiring is not easily reversed, and the retired SKU or product ID cannot be reused.
Can I sell below the reference price?
Yes, as long as the price is not so low that Walmart treats it as a pricing error. Whether you should is a margin question. Work out your floor after the referral fee, fulfillment fee, landed cost and ad cost before you match any reference price.
Why is my item live but has no Add to Cart button?
Walmart removes the Add to Cart button, price and shipping details from offers priced substantially above recent or competitor prices but not high enough to unpublish. Buyers can still purchase through other seller options. Lower the price; buy box eligibility can take up to four hours to return.
Can a promotion on Amazon or my own store unpublish my Walmart item?
It can affect it. Walmart compares your price with competing websites and recent prices. A deep discount elsewhere can lower the price Walmart compares you with, and your Walmart offer can then fail the check. Plan promotions across channels together, and check Walmart prices before a sale starts elsewhere.
