Module 01: How Walmart Marketplace works in 2026
Here is how Walmart Marketplace works: approved third-party sellers list their own inventory on Walmart.com, share one item page per product with any other seller of it, and compete for the buy box on price, shipping, delivery speed and performance. Walmart charges no setup or monthly fee, takes a referral fee on each completed sale, pays out to Marketplace Wallet or an approved payout provider and measures every seller on eight performance standards.
Six mechanics, then: who sells, item pages and the buy box, fees, payouts, fulfillment and standards. Every later lesson builds on them, so this one is worth ten careful minutes.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
What is Walmart Marketplace?
Walmart Marketplace is the part of Walmart.com where approved third-party sellers sell their own inventory directly to shoppers, set their own prices and handle (or hand to Walmart Fulfillment Services) their own shipping. It sits on the same site as the products Walmart buys and sells itself.
That gives two ways to have a product on Walmart.com:
| Marketplace seller (3P) | Supplier (1P) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells to the shopper | You | Walmart |
| Who sets the price | You, inside Walmart's pricing rules | Walmart |
| Who owns the inventory until it sells | You | Walmart, after it buys from you |
| How you get paid | Sale price minus referral and fulfillment fees | Walmart pays your invoice |
| How you join | Marketplace application in Seller Center | Supplier application; Walmart describes Marketplace as the route for "select third-party retailers" (Walmart, Apply to be a supplier) |
This guide is about Marketplace. The Walmart business models page compares both routes in more depth.
How does Walmart Marketplace work for item pages and the buy box?
On Walmart.com, one product has one item page. If several sellers offer it, they share that page, and "only one offer will win the Buy Box spot", the offer shown above the Add to cart button (Walmart Marketplace Learn, the buy box).
Walmart says the winner is generally the offer with the best value for the customer, based on their location, and that it looks at price and shipping fee, delivery speed, your seller performance metrics and the customer's experience. Its pricing rules add stock and listing content to that list (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules).
Price also works as a rule, not only a lever. Offers priced "substantially higher" than recent prices lose the Add to cart button and can only be bought through More seller options; offers priced "egregiously higher" are unpublished (Pricing rules, updated Dec 12, 2025). Module 04 shows how to stay inside the lines.
What does Walmart charge sellers?
Walmart says Marketplace and WFS have "zero setup, monthly, or hidden fees" (Walmart Marketplace, Pricing). You pay:
- A referral fee on each completed sale,
set by the item's contract category, on the total sales price including shipping, gift wrap and other charges.
- WFS fees,
if Walmart fulfills for you: a fulfillment fee per unit by weight, plus storage (module 05).
- Ads,
only if you choose to run them (module 07).
The referral fee is set per category: "The Referral Fee is determined by the contract category." It is 15% for the Everything Else category, and each category has its own rate (Walmart referral fee schedule, Mar 9, 2026). Examples from Walmart's schedule:
| Contract category | Referral fee |
|---|---|
| Everything Else | 15% |
| Home, Kitchen, Decor & Garden | 15% |
| Toys & Games | 15% |
| Consumer Electronics | 8% |
| Personal Computers | 6% |
| Automotive & Powersports | 12% |
| Beauty, Health & Personal Care | 8% if the total sales price is $10 or less; 15% above $10 |
| Apparel & Accessories | 5% at $15 or less; 10% from $15 to $20; 15% above $20 |
| Jewelry & Precious Metals | 20% on the portion up to $250; 5% on the portion above $250 |

Worked example: fees on three Walmart items
Illustrative · sample figures, using Walmart's published rates; your category and weight decide your real numbers.
| Item | Total sales price | Referral fee | WFS fee (1 lb or less) | Walmart fees per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen item, Home category | $24.99 | 15% = $3.75 | $3.45 | $7.20 |
| Lip balm set, Beauty category | $9.99 | 8% = $0.80 | $3.45 + $1.00 (under $10 surcharge) | $5.25 |
| Same set repriced | $12.99 | 15% = $1.95 | $3.45 | $5.40 |
WFS rates from Walmart Marketplace Learn, WFS fees (updated May 27, 2026). The beauty example shows why tiers matter: crossing $10 more than doubles the referral fee but removes the $1 WFS surcharge for items priced under $10, so the two prices cost almost the same in fees. Our fee and margin calculator does this per SKU.
How do Walmart sellers get paid?
Walmart pays out after the sale, minus fees. Payouts go to Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party payout provider, depending on your country of incorporation, and "ACH direct deposit isn't available." New sellers also face a New Seller Payment Hold after they start selling, while they build sales history; its length varies by country (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Complete onboarding, updated Aug 31, 2026). Plan your first purchase orders with that hold in mind.
Who ships, and who answers customers?
You, your 3PL or Walmart Fulfillment Services. With WFS, Walmart stores your stock, ships Walmart orders and handles customer service and returns for them. If you fulfill yourself, you do all of that, with a verifiable return address, and you carry every delivery metric. You can mix the two per SKU; module 05 explains how to choose.
What does Walmart measure?
Eight standards, all published by Walmart (Seller performance standards, updated Jul 28, 2026): cancellation rate 2% or below; on-time delivery 90% or above; valid tracking 99% or above; seller response 95% or above within 48 hours; negative feedback 2% or below; return rate 6% or below (9% for resold items); item not received 2% or below; late shipment 5% or below. Missing them "may result in suppression, suspension or termination" (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Seller performance standards). Module 06 takes each one in turn.
Why does this matter in 2026?
Two reasons. Walmart U.S. reported "more than 50% growth in marketplace net sales" in the quarter that ended Jul 31, 2026 (Walmart, Aug 20, 2026). That is the market, not a forecast of what any one store will sell.
And new sellers have a dated incentive. New-Seller Savings runs Feb 2, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027 and offers up to $75K in savings for sellers who go live after Feb 1, 2026. Most of it is referral fee discounts (20% off on the first $50K of GMV, then 30% and 40% at higher tiers), plus WFS, search and Walmart Connect credits, each with conditions (Walmart, New-Seller Savings).
Common misconceptions
-
"It's like Amazon, so I can copy my setup."
The fee model, item pages, pricing rules and standards all differ. Module 08 lists what carries over.
-
"Lowest price wins."
Price matters, but delivery speed, shipping fee and performance also decide the buy box.
-
"No monthly fee means it's cheap."
The referral fee is 15% for the Everything Else category and each category has its own rate. WFS fees come on top.
-
"Anyone can sell."
Walmart approves sellers and asks for business documents, a selling record and GS1 barcodes (module 02).
Key takeaways

Is Walmart Marketplace the same as selling to Walmart?
No. Marketplace sellers sell their own inventory to shoppers and set their own prices. Suppliers sell to Walmart, which then owns the stock and sets the price. They are separate applications with different terms, and many brands use only one.
Does Walmart charge sellers a monthly fee?
No. Walmart says there are no setup, monthly or hidden fees (Walmart Marketplace, Pricing). You pay a referral fee on each completed sale and, if you use WFS, fulfillment and storage fees.
What is the referral fee on Walmart?
It depends on the item's contract category: 15% for the Everything Else category, and each category has its own rate (Walmart referral fee schedule, Mar 9, 2026). Consumer Electronics is 8% and Personal Computers 6%. Some categories are tiered by price, such as Jewelry at 20% up to $250 and 5% above. It is charged on the total sales price, including shipping.
What is the buy box on Walmart?
The single offer shown above the Add to cart button on a shared item page. Walmart picks it as the best value for the customer, weighing price and shipping fee, delivery speed, seller performance and customer experience. Other sellers' offers sit under More seller options.
How do Walmart sellers get paid?
Through Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party payout provider, after the sale and minus fees. ACH direct deposit is not available. New sellers start with a New Seller Payment Hold while they build sales history.
Can anyone sell on Walmart Marketplace?
No. Walmart approves sellers. It asks for a business tax ID (not an SSN), business documents, a history of marketplace or ecommerce sales, GS1 barcodes, a compliant catalog, fulfillment through WFS or a US warehouse with returns and a compatible payment setup. Module 02 covers each item.
Is Walmart Marketplace worth it in 2026?
It can be, for a product with steady demand, a margin that survives Walmart's fees and a seller who can meet the eight standards. Marketplace net sales are growing fast, and New-Seller Savings lowers fees for new sellers until Jan 31, 2027. Run the per-unit math first; growth of the channel says nothing about one product.
