Module 04: Walmart pricing rules and the buy box
The Walmart buy box is the one offer shown above the Add to cart button when several sellers offer the same item. Walmart says the winner is generally the offer with the best value for the customer, based on their location, weighing price and shipping fee, delivery speed, seller performance and customer experience (Walmart Marketplace Learn, the buy box).
On Walmart, price is also a rule. Offers priced "egregiously higher" than current or recent prices are unpublished; offers priced "substantially higher" lose the Add to cart button; offers priced far below the market can be unpublished as pricing errors. This lesson shows each line, how Walmart builds its reference price, how to set Repricer floors from real margin and what to do when an item loses the box.
Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.
What are Walmart's pricing rules?
Three outcomes, from Walmart's Pricing rules (updated Dec 12, 2025):
| Your price (item plus shipping) | What happens | How you see it |
|---|---|---|
| "Egregiously higher than prices currently or recently offered for the same item on Walmart.com" | Unpublished, reason code "Reasonable Price Not Satisfied" | Unpublished items dashboard, with Walmart's reference price |
| "Substantially higher" than recent prices, but below that line | Live, but no Add to cart button, price or shipping details; buyable only through More seller options | Buy box eligibility "No" in the Item report |
| Far below the market | May be unpublished, reason code "Pricing Error" | Unpublished items dashboard |
Walmart also reviews shipping: offers with "extremely high shipping fees" may be unpublished or lose buy box eligibility. It publishes no percentage or formula for any of these lines (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules).
How does Walmart build the reference price?
From several outside and inside signals: competitor match prices, historical selling prices, the buy box winner's price, the average offer price and Walmart's own online and store prices. The reference price appears on the Unpublished items dashboard for any item unpublished for price, to help you set a competitive one (Pricing rules).
Two practical consequences. First, your own discounts elsewhere can lower the price Walmart compares you with. Second, if Walmart matched your item to the wrong product on another site, the comparison is wrong too; submit an external price match correction (Walmart Marketplace Learn, External price match).
How does Walmart choose the buy box winner?
Price alone does not win it. Walmart's buy box guide lists your offer's price and shipping fee, delivery speed, your seller performance metrics and the customer's experience, and its pricing rules add in-stock rates and listing content quality. Because the winner depends on the customer's location, you can win in one region and lose in another.
Where to see it. The Pricing Insights dashboard in Seller Center shows your buy box win rate overall and by item, your price against the winner's and history. The Buy Box report lists the items that competed for the buy box and whether you won (Walmart Marketplace Learn, the buy box).
How do you set floors and ceilings?
The floor is the lowest price at which an item still earns the contribution you need after the referral fee, fulfillment, landed cost, ad cost and returns. The ceiling sits near the market price on Walmart.com and other sites, below the line where Walmart removes the Add to cart button.
Worked example. Illustrative · sample figures. A 1 lb item in a 15% category, fulfilled by WFS:
| Line | At $24.99 | At the floor, $17.59 |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee, 15% | −$3.75 | −$2.64 |
| WFS fulfillment, 1 lb or less | −$3.45 | −$3.45 |
| Landed cost | −$7.00 | −$7.00 |
| Ad cost per unit | −$2.00 | −$2.00 |
| Returns allowance | −$0.50 | −$0.50 |
| Contribution per unit | $8.29 | $2.00 |
The floor here is set so the item still contributes $2.00 a unit: price × 0.85 − $12.95 = $2.00, so price = $17.59. Referral and WFS rates from Walmart's referral fee schedule and WFS fees. Below $17.59, you are paying to sell. Set the ceiling from the market, for example a little under the current buy box price on comparable offers.
How does Walmart's Repricer work?
Repricer applies a pricing strategy to each item automatically. You create strategies on the Automate pricing page in Seller Center, after accepting the Automate Pricing terms. Four strategy types:
| Strategy | What it matches |
|---|---|
| Buy Box only | The Walmart buy box price |
| External retailers only | The lowest external retailer price, item plus shipping |
| Lower of two | Whichever of those two is lower |
| AI-powered | Adjusts prices to grow GMV; only for eligible sellers and items, at Walmart's discretion |
Every item needs both a minimum and a maximum price before it can join a strategy. Repricer changes only the item price, not shipping. A change can take up to four hours (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Repricer overview, updated May 26, 2026). The minimum is your floor from the table above, never a guess.
What should you do when an item loses the buy box?
Work through it in this order:
- 01Check eligibility.
Item report or Pricing Insights: is buy box eligibility "No", or did another offer simply win?
- 02Compare price plus shipping
with the reference price and the current winner.
- 03Check stock and delivery promise.
An out-of-stock item or a slow promise loses on its own.
- 04Check performance.
A slipping metric can cost the box (module 06).
- 05Decide:
match if your floor allows, improve speed (for example WFS, module 05) or let the item go.
| Cause | Fix | Time to recover |
|---|---|---|
| Price above the line, unpublished | Lower price or shipping toward the reference price | "Typically" up to 48 hours to republish |
| Price substantially high, no Add to cart | Update price | Up to four hours for eligibility to return |
| Shipping fee too high | Lower it in your shipping template (10 edits a day per template, then a 24-hour lock) | Up to 48 hours |
| Wrong external match | Submit an external price match correction | Varies |
| Out of stock or slow promise | Restock; faster fulfillment | When stock and promise update |
If the reference price is below your floor, leaving the item unpublished is a valid choice. Selling at a loss to stay live is a decision, not a fix. If an item is still unpublished 48 hours after the price complies, contact Seller Support through the Help button in Seller Center (Pricing rules).
Why do promotions elsewhere matter?
Walmart compares your price with competing websites and recent prices. A deep discount on Amazon or your own store can lower the price Walmart compares you with, and your Walmart offer can fail the check while the promotion runs, or lose the Add to cart button. Put every channel's promotions in one calendar and check the Walmart price before any promotion starts (module 08 covers this for Amazon sellers).
Common mistakes
-
Moving part of the price into the shipping fee
so the item price looks low. Walmart reviews both.
-
Repricer floors set from a competitor's price
instead of your own margin.
-
Too many shipping template edits in one day,
locking the template for 24 hours.
-
A flash sale elsewhere
that unpublishes the Walmart listing.
-
Chasing the buy box below cost
on items that will never earn it back.
Key takeaways
- Too high unpublishes; substantially high loses the button; too low can unpublish too.
- Shipping counts toward the price check.
- Every item needs a floor from real margin and a ceiling from the market.
- The buy box weighs price, shipping, speed, stock, content and performance, not price alone.
- Promotions on other channels can move Walmart's comparison.
Do this now
- Work out a floor for each item with the worked example table.
- Enter a minimum and maximum for every item on the Automate pricing page.
- Open Pricing Insights and list every item with a low buy box win rate.
- Check your shipping templates for outliers.
- Put your next Amazon or Shopify promotion next to its Walmart price before it starts.

Problem and fix
"Reasonable Price Not Satisfied." Cause: price plus shipping far above the reference price. Fix: match if margin allows, lower shipping, correct a wrong external match or leave the item unpublished.
"We rarely win the buy box." Cause: price, speed, stock or content. Fix: floors from real margin, faster delivery and complete content.
Relay Module for both: Margin Guard (RELAY-02, an advanced module at $1,500 to $3,500, scoped in writing), which tracks every fee and cost per SKU and suggests Repricer rules when a SKU falls below its floor. Measure: items unpublished for price; buy box win rate weekly.

What is Walmart's reasonable price rule?
Walmart unpublishes offers priced "egregiously higher than prices currently or recently offered" for the same item, reviewing both item price and shipping fee. Affected items show the reason code "Reasonable Price Not Satisfied" and a reference price on the Unpublished items dashboard (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Pricing rules).
What percentage above the reference price is too high?
Walmart does not publish one. Treat the reference price as the line to stay near, and watch buy box eligibility as the early warning: an item loses the Add to cart button before it is unpublished.
How long until a fixed item republishes?
Walmart says items typically republish within 48 hours once the price or shipping complies, and buy box eligibility can return within four hours of a price update. If an item is still unpublished after 48 hours, contact Seller Support through the Help button in Seller Center.
Is Walmart's Repricer safe to use?
Yes, with floors. Every item needs a minimum and maximum before it can join a strategy, and the minimum should come from your real margin after every fee. Repricer changes only the item price, not shipping (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Repricer overview).
Can I win the buy box without the lowest price?
Yes. Walmart weighs price and shipping fee, delivery speed, seller performance, customer experience, stock and content. A slightly higher price with faster delivery and clean metrics can win, and the result can differ by the customer's location.
Can I be unpublished for a low price?
Yes. Walmart may unpublish offers far below the market under the "Pricing Error" reason code. If the low price is intentional, submit documentation through Seller Center's Help button; Walmart decides whether to reinstate.
Where do I see my Walmart buy box win rate?
In the Pricing Insights dashboard in Seller Center, overall and by item, with your price against the winner's. The Buy Box report lists the items that competed and whether you won.
