WFS vs FBA in 2026: what each costs and when to use which
This guide compares Walmart Fulfillment Services and Fulfillment by Amazon fee by fee, with sources. It ends with a per-SKU decision guide. For the full fee detail on each side, see our 2026 guide to WFS fees and Amazon FBA fees 2026.

Quick answer
WFS vs FBA comes down to size, weight, storage time and where else the stock sells. On the three sample items below, Walmart's WFS fulfillment fee is lower than Amazon's FBA fee once Amazon's 3.5% fuel surcharge is added, by $0.12 to $1.45 a unit. But storage, aged stock, prep and which marketplace sells the item matter as much as the per-unit fee. Decide per SKU, not per program.
Key takeaways
- WFS fulfillment fees are priced by weight alone, plus surcharges. FBA fees are priced by size tier, weight and price band, plus a 3.5% fuel surcharge.
- Amazon adds a holiday peak fulfillment fee from Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027. WFS's seasonal charge is on storage, not fulfillment.
- WFS has a long-term storage step at day 366. FBA has an aged inventory surcharge after 181 days and a low-inventory-level fee for running too lean.
- Both programs make you prep your own units in the US now.
- WFS covers most Walmart metrics except negative feedback; FBA moves shipping metrics to Amazon but not the order defect rate.
WFS and FBA at a glance
Here is how the two programs compare on every cost and rule that usually decides the choice.
| Factor | Walmart WFS | Amazon FBA |
|---|---|---|
| Fulfillment fee basis | Shipping weight, plus surcharges (apparel, hazmat, under $10, oversize) | Size tier, shipping weight and price band (under $10, $10 to $50, over $50) |
| Fuel surcharge | None listed on the WFS schedule | 3.5% of the fulfillment fee since Apr 17, 2026 |
| Peak fulfillment fee | None listed on the WFS schedule | About $0.32 a unit on average, Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027 |
| Monthly storage | $0.75 per cubic foot a month for items up to 365 days | Per cubic foot of daily average volume; rates in Seller Central |
| Peak storage | Extra $1.50 per cubic foot a month, Oct to Dec, for items stored more than 30 days | Higher rate Oct to Dec than Jan to Sep |
| Aged or long-term storage | $2.25 (366 to 450 days) and $7.50 (over 450 days) per cubic foot a month | Aged inventory surcharge on items stored more than 181 days, rising with age |
| Too little stock | No equivalent fee | Low-inventory-level fee when both 30-day and 90-day days of supply are below 28 |
| Prep | You prep; unplanned prep chargebacks $0.65 (label) and $0.80 (poly bag) | You prep; Amazon ended US prep and labeling services on Jan 1, 2026 |
| Returns | $4.70 a unit up to 1 lb, rising by weight; waived when Walmart is at fault | Returns processing fee where Amazon offers free return shipping |
| Signup or monthly fee | None | No FBA signup fee; Professional selling plan $39.99 a month |

Fulfillment fees compared for three sample items
The per-unit fee is where most comparisons start. Here are three common item profiles, priced on both programs at 2026 non-peak rates.
Illustrative · sample figures.
| Sample item | Packed shipping weight | Price | WFS fulfillment fee | FBA fulfillment fee | FBA with 3.5% fuel surcharge | Difference per unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: phone case style accessory, small standard on Amazon | 5 oz | $19.99 | $3.45 (up to 1 lb) | $3.45 (small standard, 4 to 6 oz, $10 to $50) | $3.57 | WFS lower by $0.12 |
| B: kitchen tool, large standard on Amazon | 1.4 lb | $29.99 | $4.95 (2 lb tier) | $5.42 (large standard, 1.25 to 1.5 lb, $10 to $50) | $5.61 | WFS lower by $0.66 |
| C: small appliance, large standard on Amazon | 2.9 lb | $39.99 | $5.45 (3 lb tier) | $6.67 (large standard, 2.75 to 3 lb, $10 to $50) | $6.90 | WFS lower by $1.45 |
WFS rates from Walmart's WFS fee schedule, updated May 27, 2026. FBA rates from Amazon's 2026 rate card as reproduced by SellerGuards (updated Aug 2026), non-peak, non-apparel; confirm any SKU in Amazon's Revenue Calculator, because size tier depends on packed dimensions. The items, weights and prices are examples, not a forecast for any product.
Referral fees sit on top and are similar on these examples: Walmart's is 15% for the Everything Else category (Mar 9, 2026), and Amazon's Home and Kitchen example is 15% with a $0.30 minimum. On item B, that is about $4.50 on either marketplace.
Three cautions before you read too much into the table:
- The under-$10 surcharge.
WFS adds $1 a unit for items priced under $10. Amazon prices its under-$10 band lower instead. On cheap items, the comparison can flip.
- Peak season.
From Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027, Amazon adds about $0.32 a unit on average, with the fuel surcharge on top. WFS lists no peak fulfillment fee, so the gap usually widens in Q4.
- Shipping weight rules.
Each program has its own rules for how shipping weight and size are measured. Measure the packed unit and check each program's calculator for your actual item.
Run your own item through our Amazon, Walmart and Shopify fee calculator.
One item through peak season on both programs
The per-unit gap changes with the calendar. Here is sample item B, the 1.4 lb kitchen tool, shipped in November.
Illustrative · sample figures.
| Line | WFS | FBA |
|---|---|---|
| Fulfillment fee, non-peak | $4.95 | $5.42 |
| Peak fulfillment fee | None listed | About $0.32 on average |
| Fuel and logistics surcharge, 3.5% | None listed | About $0.20 on $5.74 |
| Fulfillment total in November | $4.95 | About $5.94 |
| Storage for a unit received in June (0.25 cubic feet) | 0.25 × ($0.75 + $1.50) = $0.56 a month | Amazon's Q4 rate per cubic foot, from Seller Central |
The Amazon peak line uses Amazon's average increase, so your own SKU may differ. On WFS, the unit received in June pays the $1.50 surcharge because it has been stored more than 30 days; a unit received in late October would pay only $0.19 that month. On both programs, the cheapest Q4 unit is the one that arrived close to the day it sold.
Storage and aged stock compared
Storage is where the cheaper program on paper can become the dearer one in practice. The two programs penalize different mistakes.
WFS
charges $0.75 per cubic foot a month for items up to 365 days, all year. From October to December, items stored more than 30 days pay an extra $1.50. After day 365, long-term storage applies: $2.25 per cubic foot a month to day 450, then $7.50 (Walmart WFS fees; long-term rates effective Jun 30, 2026).
FBA
charges monthly storage on your daily average volume in cubic feet, at a higher rate in October to December. It adds an aged inventory surcharge on items stored more than 181 days, rising with age (Amazon, sell.amazon.com). And it charges a low-inventory-level fee when both your 30-day and 90-day historical days of supply fall below 28 days (Amazon staff, Seller Forums). We do not print Amazon's storage and aged surcharge rates until we confirm them in Seller Central; check your Monthly Storage Fees report.
What that means in practice:
- WFS punishes very old stock.
The steep steps are at day 366 and day 450.
- FBA punishes old stock earlier and lean stock too.
The aged surcharge starts after 181 days, and the low-inventory fee hits if you run thin.
- Both punish Q4 storage
, so slow stock should leave before October on either program.
Estimate each side with our WFS storage fee calculator and Amazon storage fee calculator, using current rates. For the low-inventory rule in detail, read the Amazon low-inventory-level fee guide.
Prep and labels
Both programs now expect you to arrive prepped. Amazon ended its prep and item labeling services for US FBA inventory on Jan 1, 2026. Units sent without required prep can lose reimbursement eligibility if they are lost or damaged (AMZ Prep, vendor summary). Walmart charges unplanned prep chargebacks of $0.65 a unit for a missing or incorrect label and $0.80 a unit for a missing or incorrect poly bag (Walmart WFS fees).
The practical answer is the same on both: prep every unit at your warehouse or 3PL before it ships, and check it before the truck leaves. A prep checklist per SKU costs less than one bad shipment on either program.
Performance metrics each program covers
Fulfillment programs take some account health work off your plate, but not all of it.
| Metric area | WFS orders on Walmart | FBA orders on Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping speed and on-time delivery | Covered by Walmart | Handled by Amazon |
| Valid tracking and late shipment | Covered by Walmart | Handled by Amazon |
| Cancellations | Covered for WFS orders | Pre-fulfillment cancellations mostly sit with Amazon |
| Negative feedback | Stays with you; standard 2% or below | Stays with you, inside the order defect rate |
| Claims and chargebacks | Not applicable as a Walmart standard | A-to-z claims and chargebacks stay with you, inside the order defect rate under 1% |
Sources: Walmart Marketplace Learn, Seller performance standards (updated Jul 28, 2026): "most performance metrics will be met for you, with the exception of the Negative Feedback Rate"; Sell on Amazon, Selling policies (Oct 16, 2024).
Both programs remove the shipping-driven metrics and leave you with the product-driven ones. Listing accuracy, packaging and product quality decide your feedback on either marketplace.
Using both: one stock count across channels
Many brands use FBA for Amazon orders and WFS for Walmart orders, with a 3PL feeding both and shipping Shopify orders. That works well when one stock count sits across all of them: FBA, WFS, Shopify and the 3PL. Without it, the same units sit in two programs, each paying storage, while a third channel runs out.
Some brands also use Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment to ship orders from other channels out of FBA stock. MCF has its own fees, and the 3.5% fuel surcharge has applied to US MCF since May 2, 2026 (Digital Commerce 360, Apr 3, 2026). Before using any outside program for Walmart orders, check Walmart's current rules on packaging and fulfillment for marketplace orders.
Our multichannel inventory and 3PL management service runs that one stock count daily, and the Stock Flow module builds it into your own accounts. Read more in multichannel inventory without overselling.
A decision guide per SKU
Decide SKU by SKU. Here is the logic we use.
| SKU profile | Usual fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light, fast-selling, sells mostly on Walmart | WFS | Lower fulfillment fee on these weights; Walmart metrics covered; fast shipping badge |
| Light, fast-selling, sells mostly on Amazon | FBA | Prime eligibility on Amazon; the fee gap is small on light items |
| Heavier standard item, steady sales on both | Both, split by channel | WFS fee gap grows with weight; keep each program stocked to its own sales |
| Slow seller, under one sale a week | Your 3PL | Avoid aged and long-term storage on both programs |
| Priced under $10 | Compare carefully | WFS adds $1; Amazon's under-$10 band is cheaper |
| Bulky or oversize | Compare carefully | Both programs have separate bulky schedules; run the exact numbers |
| Seasonal, Q4-heavy | Ship close to demand | Peak storage on both; Amazon's peak fulfillment fee from Oct 15 |
Whatever you choose, review it every quarter. Fees change, and a SKU's sales mix changes faster. If you want a team to run the comparison and the stock for you, see Walmart WFS management and Amazon inventory and fees.

Is WFS cheaper than FBA?
Often on fulfillment fees, not always on total cost. On our three sample items, WFS fulfillment was $0.12 to $1.45 a unit lower once Amazon's 3.5% fuel surcharge was added. But items under $10 pay a $1 WFS surcharge, storage rules differ and Amazon's peak fee widens the gap in Q4. Compare per SKU with your own weights and sales.
What is the difference between WFS and FBA?
Both store, pick, pack and ship your orders, and handle customer service and returns for those orders. WFS serves Walmart orders and prices fulfillment by weight. FBA serves Amazon orders and prices fulfillment by size tier, weight and price band. Their storage, aged stock and surcharge rules also differ.
Does WFS have a peak season fee like Amazon?
Walmart's WFS fee schedule lists no peak fulfillment fee. Its seasonal charge is on storage: from October to December, items stored more than 30 days pay an extra $1.50 per cubic foot a month. Amazon adds a peak fulfillment fee of about $0.32 a unit on average from Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027.
Which has higher storage fees, WFS or FBA?
It depends on the month and the age of the stock. WFS charges $0.75 per cubic foot a month for items up to 365 days, more in Q4 and much more after day 365. Amazon charges more in Q4 too, adds an aged surcharge after 181 days and a low-inventory fee for lean stock. Check current Amazon rates in Seller Central.
Should I use WFS if I already use FBA?
If Walmart is a meaningful channel, usually yes for your faster Walmart sellers. WFS covers most Walmart performance metrics and can lower fulfillment cost on mid-weight items. Keep slow sellers in your 3PL, and keep one stock count across both programs so neither runs out or overstocks.
Can I use FBA to fulfill Walmart orders?
Amazon's Multi-Channel Fulfillment can ship orders from other channels out of FBA stock, at its own fees, with the 3.5% fuel surcharge applying since May 2, 2026. Before using it for Walmart orders, check Walmart's current rules on packaging and fulfillment for marketplace orders.
Do both programs require me to prep inventory?
Yes. Amazon ended its prep and labeling services for US FBA inventory on Jan 1, 2026. Walmart charges $0.65 or $0.80 a unit for unplanned prep. Prep and label every unit before it ships to either program.
Which program covers more performance metrics?
Both remove shipping-driven metrics for their orders. Walmart says WFS meets most metrics except negative feedback. On Amazon, FBA moves late shipment and cancellation to Amazon, but A-to-z claims, chargebacks and negative feedback still count in your order defect rate.
