What's new in 2026: AI shopping assistants and agentic commerce, and how to respond
Shoppers are starting to ask an assistant instead of scrolling a results page.
Some of what you read about this is real today and some is still early. Here is each change, checked on the platform's own page, and the one or two things worth doing about it.
Quick answer
In 2026, Amazon brought Rufus and Alexa+ together as Alexa for Shopping, Walmart launched a ChatGPT app powered by Sparky, Shopify's Agentic Storefronts put store catalogs into AI channels and Google opened checkout in AI Mode through the Universal Commerce Protocol. Discovery inside AI is growing; in-chat checkout is uneven. Clean product data, live stock and real reviews matter most.
This page is part of our free AI automation guide, which follows the path from first automations to governance.
What is agentic commerce in 2026, in plain words?
Agentic commerce means AI assistants that do more than answer questions. They search, compare and, in some cases, buy for a shopper, within limits the shopper sets. Today it shows up in three ways:
- 01Shopping assistants inside stores
(Amazon's Alexa for Shopping, Walmart's Sparky) that answer product questions and narrow choices.
- 02Store catalogs inside general AI tools
(ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini) where shoppers discover products and follow a link or a checkout flow.
- 03Agents that complete a purchase
(Amazon's Buy for Me, Google's agentic checkout) after the shopper confirms.
The honest summary from our Commerce 2030 series still holds: AI is already choosing which products shoppers see. Paying inside the chat is coming, unevenly.

What does Alexa for Shopping change for Amazon sellers?
On May 13, 2026, Amazon announced it "brings together Rufus and Alexa+ to create 'Alexa for Shopping' on the Amazon Shopping app and website" (About Amazon). Amazon says Rufus helped over 300 million customers in 2025 (Amazon's own figure). Alexa for Shopping adds price history for up to a year, price alerts, buying at a set price, scheduled actions and Buy for Me for eligible products, including products from stores across the web through Shop Direct.
What it means: an assistant gives a short answer, not a page of results. The products it can describe with confidence are the ones with complete, structured data and strong signals.
What to do:
- Fill every structured attribute in each listing: material, size, use, compatibility.
- Write bullets that answer the questions shoppers ask ("is this warm enough for winter camping?").
- Rewrite titles to the 75-character limit that applies in every category except media from Jul 27, 2026. Move secondary details into Item Highlights, which holds up to 125 characters (PPC Land, Jun 13, 2026, citing an Amazon Seller Forums announcement; trade source, checked Oct 20, 2026; confirm in Seller Central for your category).
- Keep stock, delivery speed and honest reviews strong.

What is Amazon's Buy for Me, and does it affect my own website?
Buy for Me started as a beta on Apr 3, 2025: the Amazon app could show products from brands' own websites and complete the purchase on the brand's site, with the brand handling delivery, returns, exchanges and customer service (About Amazon). Amazon says "brands have the choice if they want to participate." Modern Retail reported in Jan 2026 that some brands complained their products were featured without permission (headline, Jan 6, 2026; trade source).
What to do: if you sell on your own site, search the Amazon app for your brand, check whether your products appear under "Shop brand sites directly" and decide whether you want to participate. Make sure orders placed this way are tagged so your team recognizes them. Modern Retail reported that brands can ask to be removed by emailing branddirect@amazon.com, and that an Amazon spokesperson said it removes businesses promptly (Modern Retail, Jan 6, 2026; trade source, checked Oct 20, 2026). Amazon's own Buy for Me page does not describe an opt-out.
What is Walmart's Sparky, and how do you sell to it?
Walmart introduced Sparky on Jun 6, 2025 as a generative AI assistant in the Walmart app that can look up items, summarize reviews, compare options and answer product questions (Walmart corporate news). On Mar 30, 2026, Walmart launched an app inside ChatGPT powered by Sparky, with checkout through Walmart's own systems (eMarketer, trade source). Walmart also announced on Jan 11, 2026 that customers "will soon be able to" shop Walmart inside Google's Gemini app, using the Universal Commerce Protocol (Walmart corporate news, Jan 11, 2026; checked Oct 20, 2026).
Walmart has not published Sparky's ranking factors. Every assistant needs the same thing: complete, accurate item data.
What to do:
- Fill every attribute; use clear titles and real photos; answer size, fit and material questions in the content.
- Keep pricing inside Walmart's pricing rules, so items are not unpublished.
- Meet the performance standards (on-time delivery 90% or more, valid tracking 99% or more, cancellations 2% or below; Walmart Marketplace Learn, updated Jul 28, 2026).
- Use Walmart's AI listing tool for drafts, and review every attribute it fills.

How do Shopify Agentic Storefronts and selling inside ChatGPT work?
Shopify announced on Jan 11, 2026 that merchants can manage AI channels centrally "from the Shopify Admin through Agentic Storefronts," surfacing products across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini (Shopify news). Since May 11, 2026, Agentic Storefronts has its own page in the admin (admin.shopify.com/agentic). Shopify says products are automatically accessible to AI channels such as ChatGPT, Shop and Copilot through Shopify Catalog, and the page shows performance, the queries products rank for and suggestions to improve product data (Shopify developer changelog).
In ChatGPT, OpenAI says "Shopify stores may appear to users when relevant, and users check out on the merchants' online store" (OpenAI Help Center, checked Oct 20, 2026).
What to do:
- Open the Agentic Storefronts page in your admin and work through its product data suggestions.
- Give every product a clear title, every variant, real specifications and written shipping and return policies.
- Make the product page answer the shopper's question on its own, because many AI-referred visits land there directly.
The Shopify guide covers Agentic Storefronts step by step.

What changed in Google AI Mode?
Google's AI Mode answers shopping questions conversationally with images, price, reviews and stock, drawing on a Shopping Graph of "more than 50 billion product listings," about 2 billion refreshed every hour (Google blog, Nov 13, 2025). Its agentic checkout can buy an item at a target price on an eligible merchant's site using Google Pay. Google says "We'll always ask for your permission first," and it buys only after the shopper confirms the purchase and shipping details. From Jan 11, 2026, Google's reference implementation of the Universal Commerce Protocol supports checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app (Google Developers Blog).
What to do: keep your Merchant Center feed accurate on price, stock and shipping, and fill the product attributes Google asks for.
Do you need to understand the UCP and ACP protocols?
Mostly no, but it helps to know they exist.
- Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP):
"an open-source standard designed to power the next generation of agentic commerce," built by Google in collaboration with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and endorsed by more than 20 partners including Mastercard, Stripe and Visa. The business stays the merchant of record, and "every authorization is backed by cryptographic proof of user consent" (Google Developers Blog, Jan 11, 2026).
- Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP):
an open standard created by Stripe, OpenAI and Meta that defines how AI agents interact with businesses to complete purchases for buyers (Stripe documentation, checked Oct 20, 2026).
If you sell on Shopify, the platform handles this for you. On Amazon and Walmart, the marketplace decides how outside agents interact with its store. Either way, your job is the same: product data, stock and price that are true everywhere.
What about AI tools for sellers?
The platforms launched assistants for sellers too. Each one follows the same principle, and it is the one this guide teaches: the seller sets the limits and approves what matters.
- Amazon Seller Assistant
can surface insights, draft actions for approval or act on its own within limits the seller sets, including background pricing adjustments (Amazon Accelerate 2026 recap, Sep 29, 2026).
- Amazon's seller plugin
connects Seller Central to Anthropic's Claude and Amazon Quick: "Sellers choose which types of data the plugin can reach and approve each action before it's carried out" (GeekWire, Sep 23, 2026; launched first in the US).
- Amazon AI listing tools
draft listings from an image, a web URL or a spreadsheet; sellers review, edit and approve and remain responsible for accuracy (sell.amazon.com, Nov 3, 2025).
- Walmart
offers AI-powered single and bulk item setup and a 24/7 Smart Assistant (Walmart Marketplace, Aug 25, 2025).
- Shopify Sidekick
works in the admin and "presents changes for your review before applying them" (Shopify Help Center).
Where automation stops
Let AI do the busywork. Three actions always wait for a person:
- 01Price changes outside the limits you set.
A pricing mistake can sell your stock at a loss in minutes.
- 02Refunds above a set amount.
Small ones can be automatic. Big ones get a second look.
- 03Anything touching account health.
Appeals and policy replies are written and checked by people.
We add three more to every build: account appeals and reinstatement, policy decisions (what your store promises customers) and any situation nobody has written a rule for. Everything else: automate it, log it and review it every week.
Five guardrails sit under every workflow: limits on every action, approval for anything risky, only the access each tool needs, a log of every step and one person who owns the outcome. What your AI says, you said.
How big could this get?
Forecasts vary widely, so treat them as direction, not destiny. Morgan Stanley estimates agentic shoppers could reach $190 billion to $385 billion of US ecommerce spending by 2030, "a likely 10% share of online retail for agentic shoppers and an optimistic outlook up to 20%" (Morgan Stanley, Dec 8, 2025; forecast). Adobe reported that traffic from AI tools to US retail sites converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026 (vendor estimate, Adobe, Apr 16, 2026).
That is the market. It is not a forecast of what any one store will sell.
The five moves worth making now
- 01Structured product data
on every channel: every attribute, every variant.
- 02Live stock and price
everywhere, from one source of truth.
- 03Real reviews only.
The FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake and AI-generated reviews (16 CFR Part 465, effective Oct 21, 2024).
- 04Fast, reliable delivery
that meets each marketplace's standards.
- 05Do not bet on one AI channel.
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT on Sep 29, 2025 and confirmed in Mar 2026 that it was shutting it down. Channels change fast.
A note on AI claims: the FTC has warned businesses not to exaggerate what their AI can do (FTC business guidance, "Keep your AI claims in check," Feb 27, 2023). We describe each tool from its own documentation, label vendor figures as vendor estimates and never say that AI will produce sales for you. AI here means software that drafts, sorts, checks and alerts. People still own the decisions.
Problems and fixes at this stage
| Problem, in the buyer's words | Cause | Fix | Relay Module or service | How to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Our rankings look fine, but sales are dropping." | Shoppers ask assistants that favor complete, structured listings | Attribute fill, question-led bullets, 75-character titles | RELAY-09 Catalog Ready | Attribute completion rate by channel |
| "Our listings get suppressed, changed or hijacked." | Bad or inconsistent data; no daily monitoring | Daily listing checks; one catalog source | RELAY-09 Catalog Ready; RELAY-05 Account Health Watch | Suppressed or changed listings, days to fix |
| "An AI assistant recommends us, but the item is out of stock." | Stock not synced from one source | Put-away stock synced to every channel and feed | RELAY-03 Stock Flow | Out-of-stock days on top SKUs |

What happened to Rufus?
Amazon launched Alexa for Shopping, which brings Rufus and Alexa+ together (Amazon, May 13, 2026). Amazon's own words: it "brings together Rufus and Alexa+ to create 'Alexa for Shopping'." In practice, sellers now optimize for Alexa for Shopping in the Amazon app, on the website and on Echo Show devices. The basics are the same: complete attributes, clear titles, real reviews and reliable stock.
Can shoppers buy my Shopify products inside ChatGPT?
Shopify products can appear in ChatGPT through Agentic Storefronts and Shopify Catalog. OpenAI's help page says users check out on the merchant's online store. Make sure each product page answers questions on its own. Check the Agentic Storefronts page in your admin to see which AI channels are on.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
An open-source standard for agentic checkout, from Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, announced Jan 11, 2026. The business stays the merchant of record. Shopify merchants do not need to build anything to benefit. Google says "every authorization is backed by cryptographic proof of user consent" (Google Developers Blog, Jan 11, 2026).
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
An open standard created by Stripe, OpenAI and Meta that defines how AI agents interact with businesses to complete purchases for buyers. Your payment provider and platform decide whether you use it. You do not need to build anything yourself to benefit.
How do I get recommended by Sparky?
Walmart has not published Sparky's ranking factors. Complete, accurate item content, competitive pricing within Walmart's rules, strong reviews and fast delivery are what every assistant can read. Walmart's own AI item setup tool helps you fill attributes; review every one it fills.
Should I let Amazon's Seller Assistant act on its own?
Only within written limits and only for tasks you can undo. Amazon lets you choose whether it suggests, drafts for approval or acts within limits. Start with drafts, review the results and widen the limits slowly. Write each limit down, such as a price band per SKU, and check what it changed in your weekly log review.
Is agentic commerce hype?
Part of it is early: OpenAI launched in-chat Instant Checkout on Sep 29, 2025 and confirmed in Mar 2026 that it was shutting it down. But AI assistants already shape which products shoppers see, on Amazon, on Walmart and in general AI tools. Preparing your product data helps on every channel either way.
Where can I track future changes?
On our dated Seller rule tracker, updated monthly with sources, and on this page, which we review monthly. Platform-specific changes are also covered in the Amazon guide, the Walmart guide and the Shopify guide. Each entry carries the date the change takes effect and a link to the platform's own announcement.
