Module 02: Shopify product page conversion checklist and theme basics

A Shopify product page converts when it answers every question a careful buyer has before they have to ask.

This checklist covers those questions line by line, then the theme and checkout checks that support them.

Quick answer

A Shopify product page converts when it answers five questions fast: what is it, is it right for me, what does it cost with shipping, when will it arrive and what if it does not work out. Pick a fast theme, show shipping cost early and test checkout on a phone.

Lesson 2 of 8 in our free Shopify guide. Read it in about 10 minutes, then work through the checklist at the end.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

How do you choose a theme?

Choose for speed, mobile layout and the sections your products need (size charts, variant pickers, comparison tables), not for a demo with large animations. A free Shopify theme is a sound start. Shopify also announced Canvas, "one interactive, infinite workspace" for designing a bespoke store; at launch it does not support third-party Theme Store themes or app blocks (changelog, Oct 1, 2026). Whatever you use, check mobile speed on a product page after every app install.

The Shopify product page conversion checklist

Start with the five questions every buyer brings to a product page. If the page answers all five quickly, most of the conversion work is done.

Buyer's questionWhat answers it
What is it?A clear title, the main photo on a plain background, one line on what it does
Is it right for me?Sizes, dimensions, materials, who it is for, photos in use, reviews
What does it cost in total?Price, shipping cost or free-shipping threshold, any duties for international buyers
When will it arrive?A delivery estimate you can meet
What if it does not work out?The return policy in one or two lines, linked to the full policy

Write titles and descriptions for people first. Clear, complete product data also helps AI shopping tools, which now read your catalog through Agentic Storefronts (module 07).

Then go line by line. Each item takes minutes to check and costs nothing to fix:

  • The title says what the product is in plain words, with the size or variant buyers search for.
  • The first photo shows the product clearly; at least one photo shows it in use and one shows scale.
  • Every variant has its own photo, price and stock, and the default variant is the one most people buy.
  • Size, dimensions, materials, care and compatibility are in the description, not only in a photo.
  • Shipping cost or the free-shipping threshold is visible before the cart.
  • The delivery estimate matches what your warehouse actually does.
  • The return policy is summarized in one or two lines, with a link to the full policy.
  • Reviews sit near the price, including the critical ones.
  • A short FAQ answers the questions customers have already emailed you about.
  • Images have alt text that describes the product.
  • The price, and any compare-at price, sits next to the add-to-cart button on a phone screen without scrolling far.
  • A sold-out variant says so clearly and offers a back-in-stock alert instead of a dead button.
  • Contact details and the shipping and return policies are one tap away from the product page.
  • Accelerated checkout buttons such as Shop Pay appear where your theme supports them.
  • Any compare-at price is real and current; Shopify now shares compare-at prices with AI shopping agents (changelog, Oct 9, 2026).

How do you find what your product page is missing?

Your customers have already told you. The questions they ask before buying, the reasons they give for returns and the words they use in reviews show exactly what the page failed to answer.

Pull three lists once a month: pre-sale questions from your inbox or chat, return reasons by product and the phrases that recur in reviews. If the same question appears twice, add the answer to the page. If a return reason says "smaller than expected", the dimensions are not clear enough.

Worked example (illustrative · sample figures): a product page gets 2,000 visits a month and converts at 1.2%, or 24 orders. Customers keep asking whether it fits a standard shelf. Adding the dimensions in inches, a photo with a ruler and a one-line answer lifts conversion to 1.5%, or 30 orders, with no extra ad spend. Measure your own page for four weeks before and after any change, and change one thing at a time so you know what worked.

Where do checkouts get lost?

Carts are abandoned 70.22% of the time on average across 50 studies (Baymard Institute, page updated Sep 22, 2025). Common causes on Shopify stores: shipping cost revealed at the last step, a slow delivery estimate, too few payment options and a broken discount. Fixes: show shipping early, turn on accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, allow guest checkout, test every discount and send an abandoned checkout message (module 05 covers the message itself).

Key takeaways

  • A fast, plain theme beats a heavy, clever one.
  • Each product page should answer the five buyer questions above.
  • Show shipping cost before checkout.

Do this now

  • Check every product page against the five-question table.
  • Add shipping cost or a free-shipping threshold to product pages.
  • Test checkout on a phone with a real card.
  • Turn on an abandoned checkout message.
  • Ask your first buyers for a review.

Do I need a paid Shopify theme?

No. Shopify's free themes are built by Shopify, updated with the platform and a sound base for a first store. Pay for a theme when it has a section your products need, such as a size guide, a comparison table or a bundle builder, and check its speed on mobile before you switch.

How many photos should a product have?

Enough to answer what it looks like, how big it is and how it is used. Several clear photos beat many similar ones. A useful set: the product alone on a plain background, the product in use, a photo that shows scale, close-ups of materials or details and every variant.

Why do people abandon checkout on Shopify?

Most often surprise shipping costs, slow delivery, forced accounts and too few payment options. Carts are abandoned 70.22% of the time on average across 50 studies (Baymard Institute, page updated Sep 22, 2025). Test your own checkout on a phone with a real card to find the step that loses your buyers.

Do reviews matter for a new store?

Yes. A new visitor does not know you yet, and reviews answer "is it right for me?" Ask every early buyer once the order has arrived, and show critical reviews with your reply. Never write, buy or filter reviews: the FTC's rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews and suppressing negative ones.

Should I write product descriptions with AI?

You can draft with Sidekick or another tool, but check every fact: size, materials, care, compatibility. Shopify itself warns that "AI outputs can contain errors" (Shopify Help Center, read Oct 20, 2026). Wrong facts cause returns and disputes, and you are responsible for every claim on the page.

Does page speed matter?

Yes, especially on mobile, where most shoppers browse. Check a product page's speed after every theme change or app install, and remove apps that add weight without earning their place. A quarterly app audit, covered in Module 08, keeps this under control.
