Module 04: Amazon seller account verification documents and setup

The Amazon seller account verification documents are: a government-issued ID, an email address, an internationally chargeable credit card, a bank account and routing number, a business license or registration, proof of residential address from the last 180 days (such as a bank or credit card statement) and tax information (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide).

Amazon says verifying your identity "usually takes three business days or less". When it takes longer, the cause is almost always a mismatch: a name, address or date that does not line up across the documents. This module shows how to prepare a pack that matches, what each sign-up step asks for and how to give your team access without ever sharing your password.

Most new stores take months to find steady sales, and some never do. Inventory, platform fees, freight and ad spend are paid by you.

Which Amazon seller account verification documents do you need?

Seven items, from Amazon's registration guide, with what we check on each before a client submits:

ItemWhat Amazon asks forWhat to check
Government-issued IDPassport or driver's licenseNot expired; the name matches every other document letter for letter
Email addressOne you will keepA company address that more than one owner can reach, protected with two-step login
Credit cardInternationally chargeableIn the business's or the applicant's name; not a prepaid card
Bank accountAccount and routing numberIdeally in the business name; the name matches the registration

How do you create an Amazon seller account in 2026?

Amazon's sign-up runs in five steps (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide):

  1. 01Provide business information:

business location and type, legal name, registration number, registered address and phone.

  2. 02Provide seller information

    for the primary contact person.

  3. 03Provide billing information:

your credit card and bank account.

  4. 04Provide store and product information:

the store name shoppers will see and basic details about what you sell.

  5. 05Verify your identity.

Choose your selling plan before you start. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month plus selling fees and is needed for ads and the New Seller Incentives (Sell on Amazon, Pricing); module 01 explains the choice.

How does Amazon identity verification work?

The primary contact verifies in one of two ways: take a photo of your face and your government-issued ID, or "join or schedule a video call with an Amazon associate". For the video call, have your ID and your proof of residential address in hand (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide).

Practical points for the video call: use the same device and network you used to register if you can. Sit somewhere with good light and keep the original documents, not photocopies, within reach. If Amazon asks for more information afterwards, reply from Seller Central with exactly the document requested.

Why do verifications stall?

The same few reasons, every time:

What went wrongWhy it stallsFix before you submit
Middle name on the ID but not on the bank statementNames do not matchUse documents that show the same full name
Old address on the statementAddress does not match the formDownload a current statement with the right address
Statement older than 180 daysFails Amazon's date ruleDownload one dated in the last 180 days
Card in someone else's nameOwnership unclearUse a card in the applicant's or the business's name
Business name spelled differently on the registration and bank accountEntity unclearAlign them, or explain with the registration document
Primary contact is not the person who controls the businessAuthority unclearMake the primary contact an owner or legal representative

Fix the documents before you start, not during.

How do you give others access safely?

Never share your password. Amazon's model is named access: each person gets their own login with only the permissions their job needs.

For your own employees:

add each person as a named user in Seller Central under Settings, then User Permissions, and grant only the pages they need. Remove access the day someone leaves.

For outside providers (agencies, consultants, software):

Amazon changed this route in 2026. Amazon's developer documentation now describes a service provider authorization: the provider, registered in Amazon's Solution Provider Portal, sends you an authorization link, or you choose "Authorize Now" on their Service Provider Network listing. You review the roles they are approved for, restrict any you do not want to grant and confirm. "The authorization is good for 365 days" (Amazon developer docs, how sellers authorize service providers). Trade press reports that Amazon retired the old invite process for providers on Aug 10, 2026 and is asking sellers to reauthorize existing provider access (beBOLD Digital, 2026). Check the notices in your own Seller Central before you add anyone.

Whatever the route, keep bank details, deposit methods, payout and legal-entity settings with the account owner. Our security and access guide explains how we work inside client accounts.

What about restricted categories and brands?

Some products need Amazon's approval before you can list them, and some need approval before they can be sold through FBA (Sell on Amazon, Selling policies). Check before you order stock. For approvals, Amazon has asked for invoices from a manufacturer, distributor or supplier and has said it cannot accept retail receipts, order confirmations, packing slips or sales orders (Amazon decline message as quoted by a seller). A purchase from a store shelf is not proof of supply.

Common mistakes

  • Applying under one person and running the business under another.

The account belongs to whoever controls the documents.

  • Using a personal email nobody else can reach.

If that person leaves, you lose the recovery route.

  • Letting an agency create the account in their name.

You may never get it back cleanly.

  • Sharing one login across the team.

Nobody can tell who changed what, and Amazon expects each person to use their own login.

  • Ordering stock before checking category approval.

Inventory you cannot list ties up cash.

Key takeaways

  • Same name, same address, on every document.
  • Proof of address must be dated within 180 days.
  • Verification is a photo of your face and ID, or a video call with an Amazon associate.
  • Add people as named users; authorize providers through Amazon's current route; never share the password.

Do this now

  • Collect the seven items and fill in the match table for your own documents.
  • Download a bank or card statement dated within 180 days.
  • Decide who the primary contact is: an owner or legal representative.
  • Set up a shared company email with two-step login for the account.
  • List who needs access and which permissions each needs.

Problem and fix

"Our seller application keeps stalling." Cause: mismatched documents or a primary contact without clear authority. Fix: one matched document pack, submitted in your own name. Service: Account Setup ($299 per marketplace, also included in Store Launch for Amazon); you submit in your own name and Amazon decides, so there is no approval guarantee. Measure: days from submission to verified.

Questions

How long does Amazon seller verification take?

Amazon says verifying your identity "usually takes three business days or less" (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). Mismatched documents or a request for more information add time. Prepare the match table above before you start and most of those delays disappear.

Do I need an LLC to sell on Amazon?

No. Amazon lets you select "None, I am an individual" if you are not incorporated (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). Whether a company suits you is a tax and liability question for your accountant or attorney. If you form one later, updating the legal entity on an existing account takes its own verification.

Can I use a personal bank account?

Amazon asks for a bank account with a routing number (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide). A business account in the business's name keeps records cleaner and makes the names on your documents match. If you sell as an individual, a personal account in your own name is consistent.

What is the Amazon identity verification video call?

One of the two ways to verify as the primary contact. You join or schedule a call with an Amazon associate and show your government-issued ID and proof of residential address. The other way is to take a photo of your face and ID (Sell on Amazon, Registration guide).

Why was my verification rejected?

Usually a mismatch between documents, an expired ID or a proof of address older than 180 days. Read Amazon's message, fix the one document it names and resubmit. Do not open a second account to get around it; Amazon generally allows one account per seller unless it approves more.

Can an agency create the account for me?

They can prepare documents and guide you, but the account should be in your name and you should submit it. That keeps ownership, payouts and verification with you. Then authorize the agency through Amazon's current provider route with only the roles it needs.

How do I add my team to Seller Central?

Employees: as named users under Settings, then User Permissions, each with only the access their job needs. Outside providers: through Amazon's service provider authorization, which lasts 365 days and lets you restrict roles (Amazon developer docs). Never share your own login.
