Sell home and kitchen products on Amazon and Walmart: the rules that catch brands out

Home and kitchen looks simple until a claim, a battery or a coating stops a listing. Here are the dated rules and how we run the operations around them.

Ops Desk from $1,499 a month · Catalog Ready $750 · Landed Cost Desk $1,500 to $3,500

To sell home and kitchen products on Amazon and Walmart, check four things before you list: materials that touch food, antimicrobial or germ claims, button or coin batteries and coatings such as PTFE that Walmart's PFAS policy covers. Imported regulated products also need certificate data filed with US Customs since Jul 8, 2026. Ecom Relays runs the operations, documents and listings behind those rules.

Why home and kitchen listings get stopped

Home and kitchen listings rarely get stopped for performance. They get stopped for words and materials. "Antibacterial", "PFAS-free", "biodegradable" and "Made in USA" each need support, and a coin cell inside a kitchen scale brings a federal safety standard with it. The products look ordinary, which is exactly why these rules catch brands out.

Reese's Law covers consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries. Seasonality, bulky items and returns

Kitchen gadgets and home gifts lean on Q4, and bulky items carry the most storage risk if the forecast is wrong. WFS adds $1.50 per cubic foot a month in October to December on units stored more than 30 days, and from Jun 30, 2026 units older than 365 days cost $2.25 per cubic foot a month, rising to $7.50 after 450 days. Our WFS fees guide has the full table. Size seasonal inbound by cubic feet, not just units.

Breakage drives returns in this category. On Walmart, seller-fulfilled returns need at least a 30-day window starting seven days after shipment, with no restocking fees or return shipping charges except on items with an approved exemption. Return exemptions cover items such as freight-shipped and multi-box goods; on those, the customer contacts you and you must send a return label within 48 hours (Walmart returns policy, Aug 31, 2026). Track damage returns by reason and packaging type (Returns Relay) and change the packaging on evidence.

What this means for daily operations

  • Claims audit.

Every "antibacterial", "BPA-free", "non-toxic", "PFAS-free", "biodegradable" or "Made in USA" claim is matched to a document before it reaches a listing, and removed where Walmart prohibits it (Catalog Ready).

  • Materials check before Walmart.

Nonstick coatings, treated textiles and food containers reviewed against Walmart's PFAS policy and the states you ship to.

  • Battery products.

The UL 4200A test report and warning artwork on file, and the warning shown in listing images where the packaging carries it.

  • Import paperwork.

Certificate data per SKU ready for your broker's eFiling, with the Product Registry reference stored (Landed Cost Desk paperwork list).

  • Listings that match the box.

Origin, materials and care instructions the same on Amazon, Walmart and the packaging.

The home and kitchen document vault

Supplier food-contact declarations or notification references; EPA qualifying statements for treated items; battery test reports; General Certificates of Conformity and eFiling references; material declarations for coatings; Prop 65 decisions per SKU. The vault sits in your accounts as part of Account Health Watch, so a marketplace document request becomes a same-week answer, not a supplier chase.

What we run, and what we do not

We run listings and claims, documents, stock, returns, account health and the weekly review. We do not test products, issue certificates, file customs entries or give legal advice. Your lab, your importer and your broker keep those roles.

What does it cost to run home and kitchen operations with you?

Ops Desk starts at $1,499 a month for daily operations. Catalog Ready and Returns Relay are $750 each to build, and Landed Cost Desk is $1,500 to $3,500. The free Profit Leak Scan shows margin by SKU after every fee, including storage on bulky items, within 48 hours of working read-only access.

Can we call our cutting board antibacterial?

Not without EPA registration for that claim. EPA's treated articles exemption covers only protection of the board itself, and unregistered products must not claim antibacterial protection. A treated board uses a qualifying statement instead, such as "This product does not protect users or others against food-borne bacteria."

Is nonstick cookware allowed on Walmart Marketplace?

Yes, with restrictions. Walmart allows cookware with intentionally added PFAS if the PFAS is disclosed on the label and in the online listing, and restricts covered products in states that ban them. Claims such as "PTFE-free" or "PFOA-free" are prohibited outright (Walmart PFAS policy, Dec 11, 2025).

Do products with coin batteries need warnings?

Yes. Under Reese's Law and ANSI/UL 4200A-2023, consumer products with button cell or coin batteries need a compartment that takes a tool, or two independent and simultaneous hand movements, to open. They must pass use and abuse tests and carry warnings on the packaging, in the instructions and on the product where practicable.

What changed on Jul 8, 2026?

Importers began eFiling certificate data with US Customs and Border Protection for CPSC-regulated finished products. For non-children's products the certificate is a General Certificate of Conformity. Your broker files the entry; we keep the certificate data and Product Registry references ready per SKU.

Do you test or certify products?

No. Labs test, and you or your importer certify. Your broker files customs entries. We keep the documents, claims and listings in line with what the certificates and test reports say, and we flag any listing that claims more than the documents support.
