Sell supplements on Amazon and Walmart: dated rules and the operations behind them

Supplements are one of the most document-heavy categories on Amazon and Walmart. We keep the documents, claims, lots and expiry dates in order, so listings stay live and approvals stay current.

Ops Desk from $1,499 a month · Account Health Watch $750 · Catalog Ready $750

To sell supplements on Amazon and Walmart you need category approval, documents such as a certificate of analysis and a cGMP certificate, labels and claims that follow FDA and FTC rules and expiry dates managed by lot. Ecom Relays runs the operations behind that: documents, listings, stock by lot and account health. We do not test, formulate or give legal advice.

What makes supplements different to run

Three things move together in this category: documents, claims and dates. Documents exist per product and per lot. Claims must use the same words on the label, the listing, the images and the ads. Every unit expires. Many listing problems in this category start when one of the three drifts from the other two: a new label goes to print but the listing images do not change, or a lot arrives with a fresh certificate of analysis that never reaches the file Amazon asks for.

Amazon's rules for selling supplements

Amazon's health and personal care guide sets out what supplement sellers need (Amazon, How to sell health and personal care products, Apr 1, 2026):

RuleSource, date
If Seller Central shows "Apply to sell" on a product, you need approval firstAmazon, Apr 1, 2026
Approval documents may include invoices dated within 180 days showing at least 10 units bought from authorized distributors, a brand authorization letter and product photosAmazon, Apr 1, 2026
For dietary supplements Amazon lists FDA registration, a cGMP certificate and a Certificate of AnalysisAmazon, Apr 1, 2026
Photos must show all sides of the packaging, including the supplement facts panelAmazon, Apr 1, 2026
If a product has been tested or certified by an accredited lab, Amazon "may verify compliance automatically without requiring documentation"Amazon, Apr 1, 2026
Amazon "automatically disposes of expired products at your expense and sends notifications 14 days before disposal"Amazon, Apr 1, 2026
Prohibited: controlled substances including CBD, kratom and THC products; "FDA approved" language without express approval. Listings can be deactivated for words like "anti-[disease]", "cures", "treats" and "prevents"Amazon, Apr 1, 2026
Amazon's guide says sellers could spend $5,000 to $15,000 a year on facility-level cGMP certification and $500 to $2,000 per product for testing and a Certificate of AnalysisAmazon, Apr 1, 2026 (cost range given in Amazon's guide)

Trade press reports a further step. According to an American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) update of Dec 18, 2025, reported by NutraIngredients on Dec 22, 2025, Amazon is rolling out a rule that all dietary supplement sellers show cGMP compliance through a third-party testing, inspection and certification (TIC) organization, with 90 days to start a documentation request once Amazon contacts them. The reports say this is separate from the product testing Amazon already requires for sexual enhancement, weight management, bodybuilding, sports nutrition and joint health supplements, and that products certified by Amazon's Compliance Fast-Track partners, such as NSF and USP, can be validated without documents. Amazon's own help pages on this sit behind the Seller Central login, so treat it as trade press until it is confirmed in your account, which we do before any listing goes live.

Walmart's dietary supplement policy

Walmart treats dietary supplements as a restricted category "limited to certain sellers", and contacts eligible sellers about an enhanced vetting program (Walmart Marketplace Learn, Prohibited Products Policy: Dietary supplements, last updated Dec 11, 2025). If Walmart has not contacted you, you cannot list in the category yet. The same page sets these rules:

  • Prohibited:

disease claims; hemp derivatives, CBD, THC and other cannabinoids; time and temperature-sensitive items such as liquid vitamins and probiotics; expired, repackaged, opened, unsealed or non-tamper-evident products; products not packaged or labeled for US retail; items named in FDA recalls or safety alerts; ingredients identical to an active ingredient in an FDA-regulated drug; ingredients from marine mammals and other prohibited animals; homeopathic drugs sold as supplements.

  • Ingredients:

marketed in the US before Oct 15, 1994, the subject of an FDA new dietary ingredient notification or generally recognized as safe. FDA dosage limits apply; Walmart's examples are iodine at 2.2% or less and yohimbine at 4 mg per serving or less.

  • Labels:

statement of identity, net quantity, a Supplement Facts panel, a full ingredient list including inactive ingredients, directions for use and manufacturer or distributor information.

  • Claims:

structure/function or general well-being claims only, truthful and substantiated, with FDA's disclaimer.

  • Manufacturing:

under FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practices.

Noncompliant listings may be unpublished, and sellers may lose approval to sell in restricted categories.

Federal rules behind the listings

RuleSource, date
A structure/function claim must be notified to FDA "no later than 30 days after the first marketing" of the supplement with the claim21 CFR 101.93(a), eCFR current Oct 16, 2026
The claim carries this disclaimer on every panel where a claim appears, in boldface type no smaller than one-sixteenth of an inch: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." It sits directly next to the claim or is linked to it by a symbol such as an asterisk, and it goes in a box when it is not next to the claim21 CFR 101.93(c) to (e)
Health claims in advertising need "competent and reliable scientific evidence", which for health benefits generally means "randomized, controlled human clinical testing". This guidance replaced FTC's 1998 supplement advertising guideFTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance (Dec 20, 2022)
Prop 65 applies to businesses with 10 or more employees doing business in California. Online, the warning goes on the product display page or is shown before the purchase is completedP65Warnings FAQ for businesses (viewed Oct 20, 2026)
New short-form warning rules took effect Jan 1, 2025. Products made and labeled before Jan 1, 2028 may keep the prior short formP65Warnings FAQ for businesses (viewed Oct 20, 2026)

This page explains how we run operations around these rules; it is not legal advice. Accredited labs test products, your regulatory advisor or counsel approves claims and filings, and your licensed customs broker files entries.

Seasonality, returns and the calendar

Supplements punish overstock because every unit has a date. Stocking up for a seasonal peak raises the chance that slow lots expire in FBA. Peak storage adds cost too: WFS charges an extra $1.50 per cubic foot a month in October to December on units stored more than 30 days (Walmart WFS fees, May 27, 2026), and Amazon's holiday peak fee averages $0.32 a unit from Oct 15, 2026 to Jan 14, 2027 (Retail Dive, Jul 14, 2026). Set reorder points from your own sales by month over two years, and cap FBA quantities by the months of shelf life left on each lot.

Returns are mostly a write-off: Walmart's policy prohibits opened or unsealed supplements, so an opened bottle cannot go back on sale there. Set a disposition rule per SKU before the first return, and track return reasons, because "did not work" and "upset stomach" are different signals.

What this means for daily operations

  • Lots and expiry.

Stock is tracked by lot and expiry date at every location. Your 3PL ships first-expiring first. FBA inbound quantities are sized so units sell well before their date, and removal orders are planned before Amazon's disposal notice (Stock Flow).

  • Claims, one source.

The approved claim set lives in one master record. Listings, A+ content, images and ad copy are checked against it weekly, and any disease word is flagged (Catalog Ready).

  • Documents per lot.

A certificate of analysis per lot, the manufacturer's cGMP certificate with its expiry date, your FDA claim notification copy and label proofs, filed by SKU (Account Health Watch vault).

  • Walmart fit.

Liquid vitamins, probiotics and any CBD or hemp SKU are flagged before Walmart listing work starts, because Walmart's policy excludes them.

Common mistakes

  • Updating the label but not the listing images, so the supplement facts panel on Amazon no longer matches the bottle.
  • A certificate of analysis that covers last year's lot, not the one in the warehouse.
  • Ad copy or influencer posts that make a claim the label does not.
  • Sending six months of a short-dated product to FBA.

What we run for supplement brands, and what we do not

We run daily account health checks (Amazon account health management), claims consistency, stock by lot, reorders planned around expiry (how we prevent stockouts), approval documents and the weekly review, on Amazon and Walmart. We do not test, formulate, write or approve health claims, file with FDA or give legal advice; your lab, regulatory advisor and counsel do. If a notice does arrive, our page on Amazon account health warnings sets out the first 24 hours.

What it costs

Ops Desk from $1,499 a month runs daily operations. Account Health Watch and Catalog Ready are $750 each as one-time builds. Stock Flow is $1,500 to $3,500. Reinstatement appeals are $750 per case ($500 on a monthly plan), with no outcome guarantee. Founding offer: 20% off launch fees, add-ons and the Foundation, plus 20% off monthly plans for the first 6 months, for our first 25 clients or until Jan 31, 2027, whichever comes first. Before you sell supplements on Amazon and Walmart: a checklist

Per SKU, before the first listing goes live:

  • Certificate of analysis: date, lab and lot covered.
  • Manufacturer's cGMP certificate and its expiry date.
  • Current label version and a photo of every side, including the Supplement Facts panel.
  • The approved claim set, with FDA's disclaimer next to each structure/function claim.
  • Your FDA notification copy for each structure/function claim.
  • Format check: liquid or probiotic (excluded on Walmart).
  • Expiry date of every lot in stock, at every location.
  • Prop 65 decision for the product.

Questions

Questions owners ask

Talk to an ops lead (free)
What does it cost to run supplement operations with you?

Ops Desk starts at $1,499 a month for daily operations. Account Health Watch and Catalog Ready are $750 each to build, and Stock Flow, for lots and expiry, is $1,500 to $3,500. The free Profit Leak Scan shows where your store stands first.

Can you get us approved to sell supplements on Amazon?

We organize the documents, check that listing details match your lab records and prepare the application for your approval. Amazon decides, and we make no approval promise. Expect requests for invoices, a cGMP certificate, a certificate of analysis and FDA registration.

Can we sell probiotics on Walmart Marketplace?

Not under Walmart's current policy. Its dietary supplements policy (last updated Dec 11, 2025) prohibits time and temperature-sensitive items such as liquid vitamins and probiotics. The category is also limited to sellers Walmart invites into its enhanced vetting program, so check your eligibility before planning Walmart stock.

Do you test products or write claims?

No. Accredited labs test, and your regulatory advisor or counsel approves claims. Our job is consistency: the approved claim set lives in one record, and every listing, image, A+ module and ad is checked against it. When something drifts, we flag it.

What happens to expired supplement stock at Amazon?

Amazon disposes of expired products at your expense and notifies you 14 days before disposal. We track expiry by lot at every location, size FBA shipments to the shelf life left on each lot and plan removal orders before that notice arrives, so stock comes back or sells before it is destroyed.

Do our listings need the FDA disclaimer?

If the product makes a structure/function claim, yes. FDA requires a two-sentence disclaimer in boldface, next to the claim or linked to it by an asterisk and boxed, and Walmart's policy asks for it too. You also notify FDA within 30 days of first marketing the product with the claim. Your regulatory advisor confirms the wording.
