Sell apparel on Amazon and Walmart: labels, sizes, returns and the rules behind them

Apparel runs on variants and returns. Every size and color is its own SKU, every listing must carry the label facts and every fit problem comes back as a return. We run the operations that keep it in order.

Ops Desk from $1,499 a month · Returns Relay $750 · Catalog Ready $750

To sell apparel on Amazon and Walmart, each garment's label needs the facts the FTC requires: fiber content, country of origin and the maker's name or RN. Every online description must say "Made in U.S.A.", "Imported" or both, and Walmart wants all three label facts on the listing itself. Garments need permanent care labels, children's outerwear must follow CPSC drawstring rules and Walmart sets a 30-day minimum return window with no restocking fees on standard items. Ecom Relays runs the variants, listings and returns behind all of it.

What makes apparel different to run

Variants multiply everything. One style in 6 sizes and 4 colors is 24 SKUs, each with its own stock, listing and return rate. Fit drives many returns. And what is sewn into the garment has to match what the listing says: origin on every channel, and fiber content, origin and maker on Walmart.

Seasonality and end-of-season stock

Apparel lives on seasons and collections, so the risk sits at both ends. Too little of the core sizes at launch loses the season. Too much of the edge sizes at the end leaves aged stock. Walmart WFS adds $1.50 per cubic foot a month in October to December for units stored more than 30 days, and from Jun 30, 2026 units older than 365 days cost $2.25 per cubic foot a month, then $7.50 after 450 days (WFS fees guide). Plan the end of every season before it starts: which sizes get marked down, which come back from WFS and when.

Returns: where apparel margin goes

Fit is a common return driver in this category, and on Walmart the refund goes out when the carrier first scans the return, before you see the item. That makes the return reason the only early signal you have. Track reasons by size and color. Offer an exchange before a refund where the channel allows it. Change the size chart when one size keeps coming back. On Walmart, watch your return rate against the 6% standard every week.

What this means for daily operations

  • Variant map.

One master SKU per size and color, one variant family per style on every channel and the same size chart everywhere (Catalog Ready). Shared stock across channels needs one count, or variants oversell: see overselling across channels.

  • Label facts as data.

Fiber percentages, origin and RN stored in the master record and filled into each channel's attributes, so the listing always matches the label.

  • Stock by size.

Reorder points per variant, because one missing size loses the sale on a style that is otherwise in stock (Stock Flow; see how to prevent stockouts on best sellers).

  • Returns by size.

Reason codes by variant, exchange first for fit, size chart changes driven by the data and the Walmart return rate watched against 6% (Returns Relay).

  • Season ends.

Aged sizes moved or marked down before WFS long-term storage applies.

  • A size chart per style, the same on every channel.
  • Drawstring check on all children's outerwear.
  • "Made in U.S.A.", "Imported" or both, per SKU, matching the label.
  • Return settings and any exemptions set up on Walmart.

Questions

What does it cost to run apparel operations with you?

Ops Desk starts at $1,499 a month for daily operations. Returns Relay, which tracks return reasons by size and color, and Catalog Ready, which keeps variants and label facts consistent, are $750 each to build. Stock Flow for size-level reorders is $1,500 to $3,500.

Does our Walmart listing need fiber content?

Yes. Walmart's textiles policy requires fiber content, country of origin and manufacturer identity to be disclosed on the listing at the point of sale, not only on the garment. Apparel that references an RN must also identify the business behind it.

Can we call a rayon fabric "bamboo"?

No. Walmart treats rayon or viscose described as containing bamboo as falsely labeled, in line with the FTC's bamboo textile rules. Name the fiber as it is, and have your advisor check any bamboo reference before it appears on a label or listing.

Can we charge restocking fees on Walmart returns?

Not on standard items. Walmart's returns policy (last updated Aug 31, 2026) prohibits restocking fees except on eligible items set up with a return exemption, and prohibits return shipping charges to customers. Seller-fulfilled items need at least a 30-day window, starting seven days after shipment.

Do shoes need care labels?

No. The FTC Care Labeling Rule covers textile wearing apparel and exempts shoes, gloves and hats. Footwear still needs truthful origin claims and listing details, and children's shoes with button or coin batteries, such as light-up shoes, fall under Reese's Law.

Can a kids' hoodie have a drawstring?

Not at the hood or neck in sizes 2T to 12: CPSC treats those drawstrings as a substantial product hazard. In sizes 2T to 16, waist and bottom drawstrings must stay within 3 inches outside the channel, be bar tacked and have no toggles or knots.
