What is dimensional weight, and what changed for USPS in 2026?

Dimensional weight is the billing weight a carrier works out from a parcel's size: length × width × height in inches, divided by a divisor. You pay for whichever is higher, the actual weight or the dimensional weight. For USPS dimensional weight in 2026, the big change came on Jul 12, 2026, when the divisor dropped from 166 to 139, so large, light boxes now bill heavier.

The USPS dimensional weight formula in 2026

  • Cubic inches

= length × width × height, each rounded up to the next whole inch

  • USPS dimensional weight

= cubic inches ÷ 139, rounded up to the next pound, for parcels over 1,728 cubic inches (1 cubic foot)

  • Billed weight

= the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight

The USPS rule covers Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select (USPS final rule, effective Jul 12, 2026). Parcels of 1,728 cubic inches or less bill on actual weight. The old divisor was 166 (DCL, Jun 17, 2026; Pitney Bowes).

Worked example: one box, two divisors

12.2 × 10.8 × 6.1, rounds to 13 × 11 × 71,001Not appliedNot applied4 lb

The first box bills at 14 lb for a 4 lb product. Moving to a 14 × 11 × 9 inch box takes it under 1,728 cubic inches, and it bills at its real weight. On a few thousand parcels a month, box choice can matter more than the carrier rate you negotiated.

Check rounding too. Every fractional inch now rounds up, so a box that measures 11.9 inches on one side is billed as 12.

How dimensional weight works on Walmart, Amazon and Shopify

Walmart WFS.

For items of 1 lb or more, WFS charges fulfillment on the greater of unit weight and dimensional weight, using length × width × height in inches ÷ 139. Items under 1 lb use unit weight plus 0.25 lb of packaging, rounded up (Walmart, updated May 27, 2026). A light product in bulky retail packaging can land in a higher WFS fee band, so check packaging dimensions before you send stock.

Amazon FBA.

FBA fees depend on size tier and shipping weight, and Amazon's fee pages set out how dimensional weight applies to each tier. Check your product's measured dimensions in Fee Preview: if Amazon's measurement is larger than yours, you pay for the difference on every unit until it is corrected, so raise it with Selling Partner Support.

Shopify and self-fulfilled orders.

If you buy USPS labels through Shopify Shipping, the carrier checks the parcel after you ship, and a weight or dimension mismatch comes back as an adjustment on your next Shopify bill (Shopify Help Center). Enter real box dimensions in your shipping settings, or the label price you see at checkout will be wrong.

3PLs.

Your 3PL bills you for the label it buys. If it defaults to one large box, a light product can bill at dimensional weight on every order. Ask for its box rules in writing and check them against the 3PL invoice audit guide.

Common mistakes

  • Rating with the old divisor.

Shipping tables built before Jul 12, 2026 understate cost on large boxes.

  • Measuring the product, not the box.

Billing is on the outer carton.

  • Ignoring the rounding.

Fractional inches round up on every side.

  • Letting the 3PL choose boxes freely.

A default large box turns a light item into a heavy bill, as the table above shows.

  • Missing label adjustments.

Carrier corrections arrive weeks later; review them monthly.

What is the USPS dimensional weight divisor in 2026?

139, from Jul 12, 2026, for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select parcels over 1,728 cubic inches. It was 166 before. A lower divisor means a higher dimensional weight for the same box.

When does USPS use dimensional weight?

Only when a parcel is larger than 1,728 cubic inches, which is one cubic foot, after rounding each side up to the next whole inch. Below that, USPS bills on actual weight for these services.

How do I calculate dimensional weight?

Multiply length, width and height in inches, each rounded up, then divide by 139 and round up to the next pound. A 16 × 12 × 10 inch box is 1,920 cubic inches, which is 13.8, so it bills at 14 lb if the contents weigh less.

Does the USPS change affect my 3PL bill?

If your 3PL ships with USPS on the services above, yes, from Jul 12, 2026. Check whether the 3PL passed on only the carrier change, and whether its own box choices push parcels over 1,728 cubic inches.

Is the temporary USPS 8% increase separate?

Yes. USPS also applied a temporary 8% increase to base postage on the same four services from Apr 26, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027. Both changes stack on large parcels. See accessorial charges for how to check what your 3PL passes on.

Can you check our shipping charges?

Yes. 3PL Audit checks every billed line against your contract each month, including label charges and adjustments. See pricing.
